Beechwood Tiger Insider - Week Six

Featured Replies

Week Five Recap

The Tigers were on the road again last week but the trip was much shorter than the previous week's trip to Franklin County. Last week it was just down Dixie Highway to Covington to take on the Holmes Bulldogs. Holmes was 3-1 with their only loss to the undefeated Scott Eagles. Beechwood needed a win to stay above .500 on the season. This game featured a lot of speed on both sides of the ball. The Tigers offense went 3 and out on their first possession, but then scored on their next four possessions in the first half to take control of the game. Sophomore QB Kyle Fieger led the way again with over 250 yards passing for the second week in a row. The Tiger defense was outstanding. Holmes did not manage a first down on 7 of their first 9 possessions. Only an excellent 63 yard run by speedy back Jonathon Scruggs kept the Tigers from a shutout. It was a good night for the Tigers as they got on track for this week's big battle versus Covington Catholic.

The JV also had a good game and put a win on the books. The Tigers faced 6A Campbell County at home and posted a solid 24-6 win. That pushed the JV's record to 3-1 with all the games being played versus 6A opponents. WR Clay McHugh had another good game with 2 TD's, one on a 101 yard interception return. Casey Erdman was solid running the ball and scored the other 2 Tiger TD's.

The freshmen road show continued as the Tiger frosh visited the strong Covington Catholic freshman squad. Beechwood's mighty 18 freshmen held their own versus the undefeated Colonels. A couple of turnovers hurt any chance the Tigers had to stay in the game and the Colonels grinded out a 28-16 win.

The Week Ahead

It is a big week for the Tigers. Neighborhood rival Covington Catholic visits Gene Daniels Stadium for a Thursday night televised contest. This is always a hard fought contest with players on both teams wanting to claim bragging rights over long time friends. Both teams have suffered the loss of key offensive starters. Cov Cath is without their season opening QB, RB and leading WR. The Tigers have also lost their starting RB Mitch Thomas as well as starting RB/LB Jack Talley to season ending knee injuries. The game features two teams playing good defense. The Tigers offense has been inconsistent at times but had their best game of the year last week versus 4A Holmes. Get there early. With this game being played on a Thursday night it will be a packed house.

The JV finally end their run of contests versus 6A teams with a trip down Dixie Highway to the Colonels on Saturday morning. Beechwood's JV has been playing well and the Colonels JV has been off a couple weeks and is working their way through injury problems at QB.

The freshmen finally get to play a home game. On Wednesday night at 6 pm the Tigers will host the Cooper Jaguars.

The Rivals

There are few games more hotly contested year in and year out for the Tigers than the game versus the Colonels. I am sure many of you reading this have a memory of a game in this rivalry. Feel free to share it in the thread. For me, the game that stands out is the night game played at Covington Catholic in 2007. Yes, that is right, it was a night game. Covington Catholic brought in portable lights and the game was played at night at CCH. It was a low scoring hard fought battle all night. The Tigers were trailing by a TD and had the ball at the one yard line with time running out and no time outs left. The Tigers tried a running play up the middle and it looked like they scored but the officials didn't signal TD. The Tigers scrambled to line up for another play but could not get the play off and lost the game 14-7.

This game is truly a neighborhood rivalry. Many of these players grow up as not only neighbors, but teammates. The youth football organization Ft. Mitchell Spartans always includes players that go on to play at both Beechwood and Covington Catholic. Before the game on Thursday, former Spartans on both teams will be recognized. There are 43 players on these two teams rosters who once played Spartans football together. That is a big part of what makes this game unique.

It should be another classic battle in this long standing rivalry between two of the top football programs in Ky. on Thursday night.

Thanks EOT. Always look forward to your write-up. Couldn't sleep so it was nice to have some reading material at 3AM.

Good stuff. With all the talk about Cov Cath injuries, it was interesting to note that the Tigers have sufferred two key player losses also.

That is going to be a lot of former Spartan players on the field on Thursday.

What is the series record between the Bw and Covington?

What is the series record between the Bw and Covington?

I believe it is 18 to 14 in favor of CCH. We went on quite q run during the Yeagle years, but have not beat the colonels since 2008.
