Inside NKY Football: Week 2

Featured Replies

Once again, NKY football was in full gear Friday night and provided some nail biters, as well as a couple blow outs. Let’s take a look at how each team finished this week.

Camels Get back on the Winning Track

It was the Avery Wood show as the senior signal caller rushed for over 100 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also passing for 73 in a 21-20 win over Newport Central Catholic. Newcath had a chance to tie it after a touchdown with under 4 minutes to play but the extra point sailed wide. Campbell County was able to pick up a clutch 4th and 1 to seal the victory on the final drive of the game. Campbell County improved to 2-1.

Jags Knock off County Rival

In another Boone County rivalry game, it was the Union squad that came away victorious as Cooper knocked off Boone County 22-7. Will Ludwig led the Jags with 250 yards passing (23 of 34) and 61 yards rushing on 19 carries. Cooper improves to 2-1 after dropping their opening game to Ryle.

Colonels Rebound in a Big Way

After falling behind early 13-0, Dixie’s offense got things going to the tune of 41 points in a 41-20 win on the road at Beechwood. Running backs Seth Caple and Darion Washington and quarterback Drew Moore combined for over 400 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. Darion Washington was the star of the game with 161 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries. Dixie improves to 1-1.

Bellevue drops Another Close One

Despite Tyler Ackerson finishing 25-51 for 325 yards passing, the Tigers couldn’t overcome 4 interceptions by the senior quarterback. Bellevue had a chance to tie late but threw an interception inside the Gallatin County redzone that clinched the win for the Warsaw squad. Dylan Hoff had 119 yards on 18 carries. Bellevue drops to 1-2.

Birds Continue to Fly High

For the third week in a row, Highlands’ offense put up Madden like numbers. Drew Houliston completed passes to 8 different wide receivers and finished 15 of 22 for 309 yards. The Birds racked up 27 points and 304 yards alone in the first quarter. Highlands led 55-14 at the half, getting a lot of young guys playing time in the second half, on their way to a 3-0 start. Senior ZacH Harris finished with 112 yards on 11 carries.

Bulldogs Use Late Heroics

With the score tied at 28 in the 4th quarter, Lloyd had what looked like to be the go ahead score on a long touchdown run. Just before getting inside the 10, howver, Jon Scruggs poked the ball out from behind and recovered in the end zone for a touchback. Two plays later, the Bulldogs were in the end zone and were able to hold on for a 34-28 victory to improve to 2-1 after last week’s loss to Scott. Sophomore Shawndale Mincy had two 65 yard touchdown receptions in the 4th quarter to help outscore Lloyd 20-7, for the final of 34-28, Holmes.

Devils Blow Lead

Leading 15-0 after one quarter and 21-6 at the half, the Dayton Greendevils looked to be well on their way to a victory. It would be a tale of two halves though as a late interception return for a touchdown and 2 point conversion by Pendleton Co helped get the Wildcats their first win of the season.

Scott Dominates

The Eagles improved to 3-0 with a 70-8 victory over visiting Aiken, OH. Scott led 56-0 at the half and saw 5 different guys reach paydirt on the first 5 touchdowns. Sophomore Deondre Pleasant and Danny Fitzgerald both had two touchdowns in the Eagles win.

Neers win battle of top QB’S

In the biggest game of the week, Brenan Kuntz and Simon Kenton went on the road and knocked off Drew Barker and Conner 42-35. It was a back and forth game until Dillon Powell had back to back touchdowns in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to give Simon Kenton a 14 point lead. Powell finished with 92 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries, while also having a 90 yard kickoff return after a Conner touchdown with time winding down in the second quarter. In the battle of the quarterbacks, Brenan Kuntz finished 14-17 for 150 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Drew Barker accounted for 435 of Conner’s 441 yards. Barker was 28 of 44 for 378 yards and also rushed for 57 yards, finishing the night with 4 touchdowns altogether.

Ryle Falls to Sycamore

The Raiders fell to 1-2 after suffering back to back losses to Scott County and Sycamore (28-0) in back to back weeks.

Injury bug bites the Colonels Again

After losing quarterback Adam Wagner and running back Luke Bir last week against Dixie to serious injuries, the Colonels lost senior WR Evan Braun this week in a 45-7 loss to Cincinnati Moeller (OH). With 7:16 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Covcath found themselves down 38-0 and victims of the running clock rule. The one bright spot for the Park Hills squad was the 49 yards touchdown pass from Ben Dressman to Mitchell Rensing.

Questions heading in to this week:

1. Will Highlands offensive line make a statement with a dominating performance up front against Matt Elam and John Hardin?

2. How will the Blue Colonels respond coming off a big loss to Moeller, while also playing without 3 starters and travelling 3+ hours?

3. Walton Verona at Holmes...is this the best game of week 3? If not, which game is? Campbell County at Cooper?

4. Will Drew Barker have a similar performance against Ryle, as he did against Boone County?

5. Avery Wood v Will Ludwig...is this the best qb match up in week 3? Or is it Mac Franzen v Brenan Kuntz?

6. Who is most likely to get their first win of the season this week? Holy Cross, Boone County, or Newport?

Kuntz had 2 rushing touchdowns!

Bishop Brossart doubled their win total of last year by winning their second game this year against Bracken County 56-28. In this meeting, senior quarterback, Casey Pelgen rushed for 277 yards and six touchdowns on 20 carries. Also putting ink in the book were Sean Tieman and Logan Schoulties, both of whom crossed the goal line and Frankie Cetrulo who is perfect so far this year on extra points. The Mustangs will have a bye before heading to Ludlow next week.
