Just For Kicks

The first game between Mayfield and McCracken County proved to be a classic as the defending Class 1A state champions survived with a 35-34 win over the Mustangs.

McCracken County saw a 29-yard field goal attempt fall short – just one play after they were whistled for a 5-yard illegal procedure penalty.

McCracken sophomore Zyaire Hughes ran for 72 yards and threw for 290, accounting for three touchdowns.

Deion Jackson had another big night for Mayfield, catching four passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

McCracken County has lost two games by a total of two points. The Mustangs will host Dyer County, Tennessee Friday in search of the school’s first-ever win. The Class 3A Choctaws enter the game with a 1-1 record.

No More Streaking

McLean County snapped a 33-game losing streak Friday with a 29-14 win over Breckinridge County. The streak was the second-longest in the state and dated back to a 2009 win over Ohio County.

Hopkins County Central lost to Crittenden County 19-8, and their 17-game losing streak is now the second-longest in the state.

The Storm play Muhlenberg County Friday, who ironically was their last win in 2011.

Doing Work

Trigg County’s Jayven Jones rushed for 190 yards on 17 carries in Trigg County’s 35-24 win over Marshall County. Jones also had 20 tackles – eight solo – from his linebacker spot on defense.

Trigg County’s win over the Marshals was their first over their western neighbor since 1984 and their first road win since 1975.

Devon on Defense

Christian County’s Devon Wharton picked off two passes and returned them 46 and 48 yards for touchdowns as the Colonels beat Hillsboro, Tennessee 28-25.

Vernon Porter rushed for 121 yards on 15 carries for the Colonels, who had 208 rushing yards for the night.

Hillsboro, who also had a pick-six in the game, is coached by former Hopkinsville head coach Craig Clayton, who was 149-84 in 19 seasons with the Tigers, including two trips to the state finals.

Fast Start

Hopkinsville is 2-0 for the first time since 2008 after beating West Creek, Tennessee 30-14.

The Tigers scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, getting two touchdowns from Jordan McGee – a 46-yard pass and a 59-yard interception return.

Zack Atkins rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown after replacing Dee Killebrew, who scored four times in the opening week win over Greenwood. Killebrew left last week’s game early after an ankle injury.

Putting the ‘D’ in Ballard

Ballard Memorial beat Fulton City 42-0, holding the Bulldogs to 27 total yards and two touchdowns. The Bombers should make it a 3-0 start for the first time since 2001 when they host winless Todd County Central Friday.

Taking Home the Trophy

Murray hammered cross-town rival Calloway County 42-7 to take home the traveling trophy for the fifth straight year.

Sophomore Peyton Glynn had touchdown runs of 75 and three yards and caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Boone

Houston, There Is No Problem

Owensboro Catholic shook off a slow start to beat Daviess County 37-13. Aces quarterback Houston Hartz was 19-of-36 passing for 180 yards and two scores. Neil Bickett added 108 rushing yards for Owensboro Catholic, who have opened with wins over cross-town neighbors Apollo and Daviess County.

Running Wild

Russellville’s 265-pound fullback Desmon Quarles rushed for three touchdowns to help the Panthers beat Fort Campbell 42-35 Friday at Rhea Stadium. It was the Panthers’ first win over Fort Campbell since 2000.

While Quarles was getting it done at the goal line, it was Demarcus Hampton who ran for 125 yards on 13 carries and scored twice.

It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the game before Tacorian Darden picked off a pass in the end zone in the game’s final minutes to preserve the win.

Fort Campbell, off to an 0-2 start for the third time in seven seasons, got 216 yards rushing and three touchdowns from junior Tristen Luke.

Back Home From Indiana

Henderson County is 2-0 for the first time in eight years after opening the season with wins over Evansville schools Reitz and North.

The Colonels play their first Kentucky school Friday when they host Christian County

Running Away

Muhlenberg County scored 39 straight points to beat Webster County 39-6.

The Mustangs got 226 yards rushing on just 12 carries from Anthony Mason, who also returned an interception for a score.

Numbers Game

Caldwell County amassed 560 yards of offense, including 388 on the ground to blow past Union County 57-20.

Jaylen Boyd ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns one week after leaving the Christian County game with concussion-like symptoms.

Freshman Javonte Riley added 119 yards on just four carries, which included an 80-yard run.

Union County had 352 yards passing, with Jarrell Foster hauling in four passes for 157 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown.

Caldwell County was penalized 17 times for 198 yards – both school records.

Quarterback Comparison

(Through Two Games)

Luke Guhy (Mayfield) – 34-of-48, 564 yards, 7 TDs, 2 INT, 4 rushes, 4 yards

Elijah Sindelar (Caldwell County) – 30-of-53, 351 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INT, 11 rushes, 76 yards

Five Games to Watch

Christian County (2-1) at Henderson County (2-0) – Tony Lewis is off to a good start for the Northern Colonels with wins over Evansville schools Reitz and North. Last year, Henderson snapped a five-game losing streak to the Southern Colonels with a 37-36 double-overtime win.

PREDICTION – Henderson County 24 Christian County 14

Graves County (1-0) at Murray (1-1) – Both teams had easy wins Friday, and this week’s game will serve as a nice measuring stick game for the Tigers, who edged the Eagles 10-7 last year. With both teams liking to pound the ball on the ground, fans could be home in time for the news.

PREDICTION – Graves County 27 Murray 20

Owensboro Catholic (2-0) at Owensboro (2-0) – The city/county championship is on the line this week at Rash Stadium as a pair of unbeatens square off. Owensboro Catholic has won the last two meetings between the schools, but Owensboro leads the all-time series 41-13-1. A Red Devil win would give the school their 26th outright city/county championship since it began in 1971.

PREDICTION – Owensboro 29 Owensboro Catholic 28

Hopkinsville (2-0) at Trigg County (1-1) – Hoptown is looking for their first 3-0 start in nine seasons Saturday when they play in Trigg County’s David Sadler Bowl. The Tigers have been impressive on the ground in their first two games, with two different backs rushing for over 100 yards. Trigg County has beaten Hoptown just once in school history.

PREDICTION – Hopkinsville 42 Trigg County 21

Mayfield (2-0) at Paducah Tilghman (1-1) - Saturday's game is the 100th in a series that dates back to 1911. These regional rivals have met every year since 1921, with Tilghman holding a slim 46-43 advantage with 10 ties thrown in. Mayfield has won seven straight games over the Tornado - the longest winning streak by either team in the series.

PREDICTION - Mayfield 35 Paducah Tilghman 31

Last Week – A perfect 5-0, including a 40-35 prediction for Russellville (they won 42-35).

Overall – 8-2
