Northern Kentucky Fans: Smashmouth Football has Spread to the College Ranks

Featured Replies

Smashmouth football has been an oddity to our friends in Northern Kentucky, kind of like "hotdog sauce". But, it may be a more mainstream term then some thought.

Then they strolled into Ann Arbor this spring and had to check their GPS — or their mirror to see if they rolled back a decade.

This was Michigan playing smashmouth football, the game's nastiest, purest form.

"When I saw them in the spring it was like a war at the line of scrimmage," BTN analyst Gerry DiNardo said. "It was what you imagine it looks like at Alabama and all the downhill teams. It changes your entire program. Just like the spread makes your defense soft, the West Coast offense makes your defense tough."

Did Gerry mess up what he wanted to say? Seems to me a West Coast offense would make your defense soft just the same way the spread does. Did he really mean to say a smashmouth offense makes a defense tough?

I found that odd as well, I guess he sees the West Coast as a more physical offense then the true Spread. Not sure.

It is, but only marginally so. But it's about as close to "smashmouth" FB as ice cream to hot sauce.

Have you even watched a Big 10 game in person?

Exactly. NKY/Cincinnati people don't know what hot dog sauce is. Do this experiment, go to the grocery story and look in the canned food isle, look for a can that says "Hot Dog Sauce".

One of the funniest things I ever heard, a NKY team was playing us at home, the person in front of me ordered a hot dog, the concession stand worker asked if they wanted sauce, the NKY person had not clue what that was and was horrified by the question.
