Murray Tigers

2013 Preview

For those who love smash mouth football, Murray High is a dream come true since Head Coach Steve Duncan took over a mediocre Tiger club several years ago and transformed the Tigers back into a perennial 2A power that thrives on old school smash mouth football. Last season the Tigers went 10-3 with their only losses coming from 1A state champions Mayfield and 2 close losses to 2A state runner up Caldwell County. Though short of their ultimate goal of a state title, the 2012 Tigers did have a memorable season, upending undefeated and number #1 ranked Owensboro Catholic and falling just short to Caldwell County in a tuff 10-3 loss in the payoffs.

This season the Tigers hope to take the next step and return another solid team that is expected to be ranked in the 2A polls and maybe best described as quick and young. On offense , this installment of the Tigers will again thrive on a run oriented offense that will remind many of the old days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust while looking to also mix in more passing behind seasoned veteran QB Dylan Boone who will have a potential D-1 target in TE Tre Hornebuckle to throw to along with WR Peyton Glynn. The running game, the bread and butter for the Tigers, will see a trio of backs led by stand out Desjahvonni Miles, John David Benton and John Winchester. In addition, QB Boone is also a serious run threat. The Tigers are also expected to utilize these backs as receivers. The Tiger line took a hard hit to graduation but Coach Duncan has proven to be a master at reloading in the trenches and this year is no different. Some immediate help is expected from center Dante Darcus who is a transfer from Calloway County. Despite being new most of the linemen saw playing time last year and are expected to be a strength for the Tigers.

The always stingy Murray defense only gave up 10 points a game last year with only Mayfield scoring more than 30 points. The Tigers will be led by Hornebuckle at linebacker along with Jonothan Curd and Jacob Mayes. Mayes is a newcomer from the Memphis area and could have some contributions on the offensive side as well. The defensive line will have to replace a couple of starters from last year but, like on the offensive line, there are several players returning that got in quality minutes last year. If there is a concern on defense it will be in the secondary which will be young and somewhat inexperienced.

Special teams will be in the sure leg of Schafer Putz, who like his predecessors, will be a very good kicker and will handle the punting duties. As of the beginning of practices the Tigers had around 70 kids in grades 9 through 12 planning to play which bolds well for a small school and is a testament to the success the program has had under Coach Duncan. After 2 close losses last season to Caldwell County by a combined 6 points the Tigers hope this is their year. The Tigers scrimmaged Trigg County and won 7-0 and then scrimmage Union County and were victorious 21-0. Miles had a rushing TD and Boone threw for a score to Glynn.

Players To Watch:

Dylan Boone QB Boone is the leader of the team and has been spectacular as the Tiger QB where he has utilized his feet more than his arm but plans to show off his arm more this season.

Tre Hornbuckle TE/LB A potential D-1 athlete who the Tigers will need to get more involved to be successful. Also will lead the Tiger defense at LB.

Desjahvommi Miles RB Miles is expected to be the feature back
