VARSITY COMPETITION

How many kids will try out for your varsity baseball team this year and how many will your coach keep?

At Boyd Co, probably 60-70 kids will try out. Generally 36-40 are kept, with 18-20 being sent to varsity and the rest will play JV

Ryle usually has about 90 kids for Freshman, JV and Varsity....Pat usually keeps about 18 per squad.

70 kids? 90 kids? Wow it must be nice to have that many kids trying out. Although it makes cuts difficult, should ensure some quality players.

What are teams doing to generate that much interest?

At Boyd Co it is that a tradition of winning has been built and the younger kids are well aware of the tradition and what is expected of them. And they want to be a part of it all and someday tell their kids about their experiences playing BC baseball.

I know Boyd County always has a BUNCH of players when we see them down at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa FL. They of course have the varsity but they take what I call the JV A team along with the JV B team as well. You know you've arrived at Cocoa when you see the coaches riding around on golf carts and the players are scattered ALL OVER THE PLACE down there.

Mboro will probably have 40-50 kids cut to 25, if History means anything. Does sound like that many, but it's about 25% of the male population of the school.

I don't know why one sport or the other generates interest. Baseball in Mboro is a tradition, back to the semi-pro teams I remember as a boy. Little League will have almost 200 participants. But the High School kids just don't come out for basketball - Casey Earls and Tyler Hatmaker anre the only BBallers I can think of that play Baseball and Football.

I find it hard to believe that Ryle is getting 90 kids out. I would say a better number is around 75.

Do a lot of teams have Freshmen, JV and Varsity programs which would allow minimal travel.

If a school can get 75-90 players out for Baseball, that is great and I hope they have enough so all the participants can play, on a team....

Boyd Co only has Varsity and JV, but there are some who would like to see a JV2 or freshman team formed.

Most NKY programs have freshman teams which allows them to keep more players in their program. From the kids stand point, if they feel their chances of making the team are good then you will get more to try out. Your still only looking at about 50 players making the team...and that number is on the high end.
