Two teams could move to Los Angeles

Featured Replies

That gives us the Rams, Raiders and Chargers. The battle over which city can waste more money to build a new useless, single-occupant stadium that will saddle the civic government with debt for decades begins...

Absolutely one of the best posts I've read on BGP, and I've been here for a little bit. So succinct, yet so true.

Raiders want back out of Oakland, I think that's a poorly kept secret at this point.

Chargers could leave San Diego I suppose for a new stadium and a lot bigger media market.

I don't get the Rams though. Problems with the dome the city built them?

At some point, cities have to put their foot down and say goodbye to franchise's who want to hold them hostage. I've done a complete 180 on this issue in the last 20 years, but I'm sure I wouldn't sell out to any sports franchise the way Cincinnati did to the Bengals. Other cities started the trend, and others have followed, I know. It's a bad trend that has run it's cycle.

Kansas City actually has some rabid fans and games at Arrowhead are supposed to be one of the best experiences in the NFL.

San Diego seems too big of a city (population wise), that has too much money (seems like it'd be the kind of place whose weather and beaches attract lots of people), and too much history there in the city.

I could see the Jaguars making the move (especially given the turnover in ownership). I could see the Raiders making the move back as well.

If the A's owner gets his wish and professional baseball moves out of Oakland and over to San Jose, then you have to think that their situation as the sole occupant of that stadium will become untenable.

Getslow... you don't say much, but when you do, it's usually on point. I mean that as a compliment.

LA will build a new stadium for whichever team heads in that direction. That's major incentive for any franchise who may think of moving. I think that puts the Chargers in the running as a team who would consider LA.

Obviously the Raiders lead this list, and frankly I'm a little surprised they haven't moved already. Maybe hoping Oakland will lose the A's and build them a stadium, but both are pipe dreams right now.

Jacksonville seems like as likely a target to be LA bound as any team. Dreadful attendance at home for several years, and I don't know how it will get better. Rough place for an NFL franchise to exist if you ask me: you are right in middle of college football central. Florida, Georgia, FSU, South Carolina, the SEC in general. LA would be a like winning the lottery for this franchise. Heck, moving to Wichita, Salt Lake City, or San Antonio would be better for them.

I think one of the problems with the LA stadium is that there are two competing factions trying to block one another from building the stadium. I'll try to find the article I'm thinking of that shows the two proposed designs for each.

San Antonio is shockingly a Spurs town (and I say that because no one here knows basketball or remotely cares about it, but they love the Spurs... they literally couldn't tell you things like where Tim Duncan went to college or who Danny Green was as a rookie, but buy Spurs gear and love going to the big games). I find this surprising given the love of football in Texas, but really do wonder if there are enough corporate sponsors available at the moment to support an NFL franchise (the US Military is a huge part of the local economy here, but I don't see them sponsoring a franchise).

Ultimately, I think if San Antonio were to get another pro sports franchise (it's the 7th most populous city in the US), it would be an MLB franchise. They've actually hosted some exhibition MLB games in the Alamodome (previous home of the Spurs and still a very nice venue) there this year.
