Pikeville

Can Pikeville make a deep run in the playoffs in 2013? 2012 seen Pikeville go 7-6 and losing in the regional championship to Fairview 36-14. Pikeville’s main problem in the playoffs is getting past Hazard. When it comes to the playoffs, Hazard owns Pikeville.

Pikeville lost 5 starters on last year’s team but return all of their offensive weapons including talented running back Chase Hall who rushed for over 1,500 yards on 177 attempts and 21 touchdowns. Pikeville also returns Quarterback Austin Charles who rushed for 379 yards on 58 attempts and 4 touchdowns, passing for 1,004 yards on 59 completions on 133 pass attempts and 11 touchdowns. Other notable returning players; Ben Maynard (426 rush yards, 60 attempts, 6 Touchdown’s, 16 pass completions on 31 attempts, 268 yards and 1 touchdown), Daric Pugh (176 rush yards, 28 attempts, 3 Touchdown’s), Cody Estep (30 pass receptions for 752 yards, 13 touchdown’s).

On the defensive end, Pikeville allowed 20+ points per game last year, but for them to get past Hazard in the playoffs their defense is gonna have to step up. If Pikeville can stop Hazard’s offense then they will have a good chance at knocking of those Bulldogs. Pikeville’s defense will be lead by Austin Black who had 78.5 tackles last year with 61 of those being solo tackles. Also joining Austin on the defensive side of the ball will be Daric Pugh (70 tackles, 53 were solo), Gage Morrison (61.5 tackles, 49 were solo).

On the schedule front, Pikeville will open the season on the road at Prestonsburg on August 23. On August 31 Pikeville will meet those Hazard Bulldogs in the Pike County Bowl. On September 6 Pikeville will go on the road once again traveling to Paintsville to take on the Paintsville Tigers. Pikeville will return home on September 13 as they host Sheldon Clark. Pikeville go back on the road traveling to Belfry to take on the Belfry Pirates on September 20, Pikeville will then return home for 3 straight home games starting on September 27 hosting Middlesboro, Pikeville will then begin district play on October 11 hosting South Floyd, Pikeville will meet Phelps on October 18 at a TBD location, Pikeville will host district opponent Allen Central on Senior Night on October 25. Pikeville will end the regular season on the road traveling to Russell to take on the Red Devils.

Pikeville fans are always excited this time of the year because well it’s football time in the bluegrass and not only that, they also get excited to see how their Panthers are gonna do. Pikeville returns the heart of their team, can they beat Hazard and make it to Bowling Green to play on the big stage?

Players to Watch:

Chase Hall (SR. RB/DB). Chase is a stellar running back who knows how to get the job down on the ground, rushing for over 1,500 yards last year proved that. Chase also caught 5 passes for 43 yards. I suspect Chase to have bigger numbers this year.

Ben Maynard (JR. RB/DB). Ben who is much like Chase, knows what to do with the football once he has it in his hands. Ben rushed for 426 yards on 60 attempts also had 268 passing yards.

Austin Charles (JR. QB/DB). Austin who had over 1,000 passing yards last year to go along with 379 rushing yards is a threat for other teams. If he can find open receivers, he’s gonna get them the ball, if he can find holes in the line, he’s gonna get through for a big gain.

Austin Black (SR. WR/DB). Austin lead the team in tackles last year with 78.5 for the season. Austin also caught 16 passes for 186 yards.

Cody Estep (JR. WR/DB). Cody will be the top receiver that Austin Charles will be looking for when passing as Cody who caught 30 passes for 752 yards and 13 touchdowns in his Sophomore season. Cody also had 54 tackles to go along with 4 fumble recovery’s for 75 yards and 1 touchdowns. Cody also had 5 interceptions for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns.

This is a team that truly improved weekly last year. We (Raceland) won early in the year with a running clock and then lost in OT in week 2 of the playoffs. I was very impressed with the team and the obviously good coaching staff. You don't turn your season around like that without great kids, great attitude and good coaching. I look for great things from this years team.

Pikeville should have a good run this yr without a doubt , but this article make it sound as if their only worry in the playoffs will be Hazard . Pikeville will also have to worry about getting past a very talented , & exp Raceland or a very talented Fairview in the Regionals . Either way should be a great yr for the Panthers! Good luck to all , & pray for no injuries !

I think the OP was simply speaking of the past few years where Pikeville never could seem to get by Hazard.. In other words, that's the team that's been there achilles heal... Much like Racelands achilles heal has been mainly Fairview, these past few years, but, that doesn't mean Raceland doesn't respect Hazard, Pikeville, Williamsburg, etc., those just aren't the teams that typically have stood in there way from moving forward..

Exactly. Raceland will be good but I was referring to, if they could get past Hazard in the playoffs which has been a nightmare for Pikeville

I understand what you mean . Sorry i didnt read it like that at first . What can i say i hadnt had my coffee yet lol

We'll be making the trip up on the 27th of September.. should be a good game.
