Congrats to both teams, really happy for Haylee, also really happy for her Dad Rob Smith my guess he was the luckiest guy in the tristate last night!!!

 

When was the last time Ryle lost 2 games in a week to 9th region teams, I would guess it hasn't happen since before Allen pitched for them.

 

Said it a bunch on here, not sure the 9th region tourney is going to be a classic but it should be fun as heck!!

Notre Dame makes claim as top team

Stays undefeated in region with win over No. 1

 

The Notre Dame Academy Pandas handed second-year softball coach Joe Stephenson a signature win Friday with a 2-1 upset of three-time defending Ninth Region champion Ryle in Park Hills.

 

The Pandas, ranked tied for third in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, defeated the top-ranked Raiders for the first time in 12 years.

 

“I’d say it’s an upset because they’re ranked higher than we are,” Stephenson said. “This gives our girls a lot of confidence. They want to be the best, and we beat the best.”

 

The Pandas (15-5) won their fourth game in a row with the combined forces of veteran captain Mickey Terry, who's been promising her teammates a win over Ryle (15-5), and former Raider no-hit artist Haylee Smith, who was facing ex-teammates for the first time since her transfer.

 

“It was an advantage and a disadvantage,” said Smith, who struck out seven and won for the 10th time in 11 decisions. “They know how I pitch. And I know how they hit, and they’re incredible.”

 

Smith, a sophomore, struck out the side in the fifth and kept the Raiders in their scoring funk with a four-hitter. Ryle is averaging 2.3 runs over the last seven games.

 

Terry’s third triple of the season, bashed to the right field fence, plated Smith with the first run of the game in the fourth inning.

 

“Haylee brings confidence and a big presence to our team,” said Terry, a four-year starting shortstop. “To win with her here is a big experience.”

 

Laura Finke made it 2-0 in the fifth with an RBI single to right that scored Maddie Rose, but the never-say-die Raiders clawed to within a run in the seventh when Hannah Brumbach delivered an infield single.

 

Then things got a little crazy.

 

Jayda Collins grounded into a force-out at third for the second out. The third out was announced by an umpire who said the Ryle runner at first was caught off the bag during the play. The call was overruled, prompting discussions with both head coaches. The runner was sent back to first.

 

Smith was able to end it by inducing a ground ball hit back to the pitcher’s circle.

 

The Pandas, without a regional tournament title since 1999, remained the lone unbeaten team in the region at 12-0 after losing nine regional contests last year. They also held their perch atop the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference big-school standings.

 

The Pandas’ only loss to a local team came against Walton-Verona. ⬛

teams in the region that were not "supposed" to beat Ryle come through. The next few weeks are going to be fun to see play out. Boone/Conner, Conner/Ryle, Notre Dame/St Henry and Boone/Notre Dame.

Sophomore Haylee Smith scattered four hits to earn the win against her former team, and she scored the tying run as Notre Dame edged Ryle, 2-1 on Friday. The right-hander fanned seven to improve to 10-1, and she allowed her lone run in the top of the seventh but retired the final two batters, stranding runners on first and second.

 

Smith singled in the top of the fourth and scored when senior shortstop Mickie Terry tripled to right field. Notre Dame extended its lead in the fifth inning on a single to right by junior catcher Laura Finke. Meanwhile, Smith carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Smith, who transferred from Ryle after last season, fielded a ground out to convert the final out in the seventh.

 

With one out in the final frame, Notre Dame forced the lead runner at third on a bunt and appeared to record the game-ending out when the batter did not touch first, thinking it was the final out, but after discussion Ryle was allowed to send another batter to the plate. It was the fourth straight win for the Pandas.

The Notre Dame softball team defeated Ryle 2-1 last night to remain undefeated in 9th Regional play and make a bold assertion that they are the team to beat inNorthern Kentucky now. A position that has been held by Ryle in recent memory, the brilliant piece of work that Panda head coach Joe Stephenson has put together in closing the talent gap was exhibited last night as Notre Dame showcased that Ryle’s dominance in the sport is now an afterthought.

 

Panda Sophomore Haley Smith was the star last night, outpitching counterpart Ali Crupper by striking out seven and allowing just one run on four hits. The win moved her 2013 record on the mound to 10-1 on the season; tops in Northern Kentucky.

 

Notre Dame captain’s Mickey Terry and Laura Finke provided the RBI’s for the Pandas – Terry’s in the 4th inning and Finke’s in the 5th. As the Raiders have been known to do, they rallied in the 7th inning and did score one thanks to a Hannah Brumbach infield RBI, but Smith closed the door to secure a rewarding victory over her former coach and teammates.

 

With the win, Notre Dame leapfrogs Ryle in the nkyFAN top 10 as the new top-ranked team inNorthern Kentucky. While this is a team that is really good with freshman Abby Jones on the mound, Smith catching and Finke and Smith’s bats working, what really separates them from the rest of the competition is Smith on the mound – and that was on full display Friday night.
