So for those who want to play weaker teams, what are you getting out of it? Are you learning something? Are you getting BETTER? I understand getting stuck with weaker teams in your district, Campbell County, Brossart and Scott have to deal with this every year but do these teams need to have Bellevue, Ludlow, Dayton, Newport and these types of schools on their schedule? In my opinion neither team gets anything out of these games but the stronger team gets to pad their stats.

Bellevue never bothers to even show up!!!

 

I agree that it does not help us to play some of theses teams, but you never know what is going to show up talent wise, right? It was pretty clear the other night after the first inning, then it just became a joke to the other team, they were wasting time and laughing...and we were there to play! So you are telling me 4A - 6A (I would even throw in better 2-3A schools) should have Dayton, Bellevue and those types of schools on their schedule? I am not talking districts games. I am talking about regular season games?

What post season? Approximately 1/2 of the schools will play in a region tournament with only 16 playing in the state tournament. Some of these smaller, less talented schools, don't need to schedule up. They aren't making a run at any title so their coach should schedule teams that they can compete with...regardless of level. This is still a game and not all kids are looking to play college softball. You should treat players like your daughters, an extension of your family; so don't put them in a situation where they will be embarrassed. You are not only embarrassing them, but you are also embarrassing yourself and your school. These are still just kids...

 

Now travel ball is different to a degree. If your goal is to get the players ready for college ball or if you are chasing a world series or national title, you should play the type of teams or versus that caliber of player that you would expect you will need to beat to achieve your goals. But for high school, we all know that most of them are out there because their friends are doing it, they have nothing better to do or maybe the parents have told them to do it so they don't have to babysit them after school. Regardless of why they are out there, as coaches we should take care and responsibility to teach these young ladies life lessons on top of softball fundamentals.

So a kid should take all the easy classes at school and not challenge themselves because they are just kids and that way when they graduate they can say how high their GPA is? Thanks you answered my question (not original but the larger schools playing the little schools). What would hurt Bellevue or Newport to play other 2 - 3A schools all year? Why would the 5A and 6A schools want to play these teams? How do they (big schools) get better playing these teams? THEY DON'T!

 

IF the Newports, Bellevues and those schools could play the smaller schools where they belong with their talent level until district play doesn't that make sense instead of playing 6A schools? Neither team gets anything out of it. To me a challenge to them would be playing Lloyd or Holmes. Those teams are better than them but I bet they get better playing those teams where they don't playing the big schools.

WOW!!! You don't plan on being a head coach very long.

I have always heard that a good coach schedules look like this:

1/3 games against teams that you should beat

1/3 games against teams that are similar to you. (if you play well, you win)

1/3 games against good teams (you must play well to win)

Sometimes you have to use a little common sense. No one is suggesting that the teams you have listed should play each other. My guess is when this thread was started it was not about schools like the ones from NKY that you spoke about playing up, but yes I think those schools should try to challange themself as much as possible.

If you are truly serious about playing in college you should be on the best travel team you can be. Also should be taking private instruction. I do not work hitting with my dd except to be an extra pair of eyes to help fine tune her swing. She loves her high school teammates and plays her heart out to help her high school team but she will be seen far more during summer ball.

I don't think it should have anything to do with school size, it should be about each team and what's best for that team. Campbell County is a 6A school and I can think of at least 5 single A schools of the top of my head that are as good if not better than Campbell, should Campbell not play those schools?

 

But I agree with your point it is worthless to beat up on teams that just can not compete with you. That doesn't mean you can't play teams that are lesser than you but if you are going to win 20-0 in 3 innings and your pitcher is going to have a no hitter that isn't worth the gas money to go watch.

 

How many times do Ryle and Conner play the bottom 5 to 10 teams in the area. My guess is not that often. Boone County plays one of the tougher schedules in the area every year to try to get them ready for the post season. They haven't got over the hump yet but my guess is it will pay off for them sooner or later.

My daughter took a couple hitting lessons from Chip Gregg at NKU when she was younger but for the vast majority of the time she has worked on her own or with me, and I am no hitting intructor. It works for some and doesn't for others. Of course my daughter got her scholly more for her defense than she did her offense.

I coached mine in soccer for about 5 years before she really got into softball so we were way past the butting heads part. She is a pretty smart kid she knew by 8 or 10 that I am always right!!
