The BBA enforces this rule in every game. However, if coaches are coaching, they let them be. If you're yelling at an official outside of your box, better get comfortable.

 

I also agree that 14 feet is too small.

 

In which gyms in the 10th and 11th is there a 14' line? I haven't noticed one. I am not talking about the line at the top of the bench that prevents a coach from going toward half court - that is consistently enforced. I am talking about the line in the middle of the bench that prevents a coach from going toward the baseline.

Oh and if you think I am wrong, then I will use an example of the Charge/Block calls in the Ninth Region Tourney. Nine out of ten times, the Ninth Stripes will call a Block on the same play that the Sixteen Stripes called a charge! Same rule book, same type of play, different interpretation from different Regon Stripes!

I noticed the same thing in the 10th Region Tournament. 8th Region officials rarely called a charge on calls that 10th region officials wouldn't have thought twice about.

Agreed. I think that's the stance very official takes. You get latitude until you get attitude.

 

Hence the Stripes decide how the rule is to be enforced, instead of following what is written in the book and again that is what is wrong. If the rule is, then the rule should be.

 

It is not up to the Stripes to make the rules but to enforce the rules! If the book says a coach can't go past a certain point, then enforce the rule and guess what, coaches will start to stay inside the box!

 

Then again, if no one is going to enforce the rule, then take the rule out of the book!

 

It shouldn't be that the good old boy from HS X is coaching his kids while talking to me, while the Coach from HS Z is yelling at me and not coaching his kids!

I've not been to all the 10th schools, but all of them I have been to have been marked. The BBA sent out a memo last fall about the enforcement of this rule and the schools were required to have their benches marked. It used to be first seat to last seat, or at least that's what officials would say. For the record, I never saw anyone get stuck for being out of their box - coaching or yelling. Normally you see that enforced at lower levels when new(er) officials are learning what to enforce and what not to enforce. I agree with TOG, they're paid to enforce rules and maintain order, but sometimes you must take the rule book and add a pinch of common sense.

When we start interpreting what we think is allowed or allow what we believe is just good old common sense, that is where the trouble starts, as what is common to you might be uncommon to me!

I apologize if I missed the second line in other gyms this season. I went to a couple dozen games this year and not one caught my eye until the massive, impossible to miss lines on the Rupp floor.

 

The lines were there for the UK v Fl game too. Donovan spent some time down by the baseline and nothing was said. I have visions of Tom Creen roaming the sideline freely. Maybe he stays in the cage as he paces too and my memory isn't what it used to be.

 

Even so, I think it is dumb to limit the coaching box to that extreme.

My common sense is no better than anyone else's. I didn't take that as a knock either. All I'm trying to say is that every rule book has things that are just plain silly. If Coach R got stuck each time he stepped out of his box people would riot. I applaud officials who can identify what's important and let the other stuff slide. Now, that has to go both ways, that much I do agree with you on. Too often we see something slide in one direction and not the other, which is not acceptable. Personally, I don't want to go to a game and see the officials take over and enforce the rule book emphatically. I'd rather see order on the floor, good flow to the game and defenses be rewarded for good play. Maybe my beliefs aren't everyone else's, but if you took a poll I'd bet people would rather see that than games where 40-50 fouls were called.
