Who am I to argue with the fine folks at the Louisville Invitational Tournament? They saw fit to name Quick as tournament MVP after his Trinity Shamrocks won the tournament for the second year in a row and third time in four years. In four games in this week’s tournament, Quick averaged 13.5 points per game, including a dominating 21-point performance against PRP in Friday night’s quarterfinal. He also hit the free throw with one second remaining in the final game the clinched the tournament championship for the Shamrocks.

This Week’s Games of Note

Eastern at Male, January 23, 7:30 pm

Despite St. Xavier’s and Central’s early eliminations from last week’s LIT, there still seems to be a significant gap between the top four teams in the Seventh and the rest of the pack. These two teams are probably the most suited to turn their talent into wins and make a move into that group. A win this week could be just the thing to start momentum moving in the right direction for either of them.

Collegiate vs. Bishop Brossart, January 24, 1:00 pm (All “A” Classic, Frankfort Convention Center)

This is a rematch of a Round of 16 game from last year’s All “A” Classic, won by Collegiate as the Titans made a run all the way to the semifinals. Collegiate has a great record, but a signature win has thus far eluded them. Andrew Steggeman, Collegiate’s leading scorer, was named MVP of the Seventh Region All “A” Classic two weeks ago and is a dominant scorer.

Ballard at St. Xavier, January 25, 7:30 pm

Both teams will enter this week undoubtedly disappointed with their results in the LIT. Still, despite their early exit from the LIT, St. Xavier should undoubtedly still be feeling a lift from their win over Trinity. Both teams have winnable games earlier in the week that could serve to get them back on track. The matchup between St. Xavier center Brock Kiesler and Ballard forward Kelan Martin alone will be worth the price of a ticket.

Trinity at Montgomery County, January 26, 1:45 pm

This game will be played as part of the Joe B. Hall Classic at Montgomery County High School. These two teams are both coming off unexpected tournament wins. Trinity knocked off heavy favorite Ballard in the championship to win the Louisville Invitational Tournament. Montgomery County won the Toyota Classic in Georgetown, capitalizing on the early elimination of Scott County by beating not only the team that knocked them off, Collins, but running all the way to the title. This should be a great game between two teams really flying high.

How are the district tournaments shaping up???

How are the district tournaments shaping up???

Hard to say. Very few district games have been played to this point. To my mind, the favorites remain the same as they were at the beginning of the season and will be the top seeds in each of the districts.

25th: Central

26th: St. Xavier

27th: Trinity

28th: Ballard

In the 27th, it's critical to be on the opposite side of the bracket from Trinity since one win gets you into the regional tournament. Having seen Waggener but not yet seen Seneca or Atherton, my guess would be that Seneca's going to be that team.

Too few district games have been played to really work out what those draws might look like.

That's some fine analysis. I would love to take in every second of the 7th region tournament.
