Not many thought the 2012 Breds would even come close to 20 wins last year with loss of pitching great Danielle Hausfeld, but the Breds with 5 freshman and 1 sophomore in the starting lineup surprised many and captured it’s 4th district title (07,09,10,12) in it’s 7th year of the fastpitch program. The Breds moved on to the Regional Tourney and stunned many by beating Notre Dame in the 1st round before being beat by Conner in the Semi-finals and finished the season 20-14. While the 2013 Breds team will return 6 starters, it will be sort of a rebuilding year, as they will have to find replacements for 3 key positions and only 3 returning with limited varsity experience.

Starters lost to graduation are:

1st baseman Rachel Hardesty (.408, .470 OBP, 42 H, 30 R, 32 RBI, 5 errors in 175 chances).

Leadoff hitter and rightfielder Meghan Millard (.360, .424 OBP, 45 H, 49 R).

Centerfielder Paige Immegart (.306, .350 OBP, 34 H, 23 R, 28 RBI).

The 6 returning starts include:

Jr. Pitcher and Outfielder Taylor Burkart (.312, .414 OBP, 29 H, 23 R, 15 RBI). On the mound in her 1st year of pitching she was 11-8 with 3 saves in 93 innings of work. She had a perfect fielding % on the mound with 13 putouts & 23 assist. More than likely she will see most of her time roaming the outfield this year where she had 2 errors in 34 chances last year.

So. Catcher Kristen Schreiber (.257, .370 OBP, 26 H, 20 R, 6 2B, 5 3B, 18 RBI.). She possesses one of the regions strongest arms behind the plate and gunned down 16 of 29 base stealers. This young lady "flatout" gets it done behind the dish and puts her body on the line, diving for pop ups, blocking balls in the dirt, & blocking the plate.

So. 2nd baseman and leading hitter from last year Casey Kohls (.430, .496 OBP, 46 H, 28 R, 7 2B, 2 3B, 25 RBI, 15 SB). In 111 total chances she committed only 7 errors. Has more varsity experience than most having started as a 6th, 7th, & 8th grader at Dayton HS before coming to NewCath.

So. Shortstop Michaela Ware (.371, .456 OBP, 30 H, 22 R, 2 3B, 11 RBI). She makes plays that you wouldn't think could be made, isn't afraid to get dirty, and has excellent speed.

So. 3rd baseman Loren Zimmerman (.211, .362 OBP, 16 H, 17 R, 14 RBI). Last year she was the victim of hitting it where they were instead of where they weren’t. By far the toughest kid on the team and isn’t afraid to put her body on the line. Hit 3 run double to break the tie in the ND regional game.

So. Pitcher Sarah Neace (98 INP, 9-5, 1 SV, 3 SHO, 81 K’s). After losing Danielle Hausfeld to graduation, the young Ms. Neace did one hell of a job taking over on the mound. For a kid with less than a year of any pitching experience this young lady filled the void better than expected. The beginning of the season she saw limited action since she was making the transition from basketball to softball, but once the season was a month old and she was able to get more throwing in she did a wonderful job stepping into the roll of starter. On May 17th in the 2nd to last game of the regular season she fired her 1st career No-Hitter while striking out 10 against Bellevue. She does an excellent job of keeping the ball low which results in many groundballs. With more practice she will only get better and has a bright future on the mound for the Breds.

Other returning players with varsity experience include:

Christina Enzweiler (OF), the only senior on the roster. In my opinion the most improved player in the program. For a kid that couldn’t throw or hit as a frosh she has come “light-years”, just might be in the starting outfield.

Molly Mertle (Jr-1B), the “consummate team player”. She is the strongest kid on the team and as better than average speed for her size. If she can improve on her glove work could be at 1st base.

Morgan Martini (So. INF-OF). She could have been the 6th frosh to start last year had it not been for injuries. Can absolutely hurt a ball and a has a better than average arm.

There are 5 freshmen who played JV last year that have a chance to work their way into the lineup as well.

Looking forward to Feb 15th, however 4 starters and 1 key returning sub all playing on the NewCath jv/varsity basketball team which means they will miss the 1st month of practice, so it could be a few weeks before “team chemistry” is there.

Sounds like NewCath will be very good this year. I hear the Burkhart kid is a good player. My oldest played some basketball with Ware last spring/summer, she has real good foot speed and is good athlete.

The key will be finding two good outfielders.

Also, the best thing about this group is that Taylor and the 6 sophomores have been playing either on the same team or as opponents in softball, basketball, & soccer for the last 6 years and they have a great "bound" with each other. Team "unity" will be a strength and the "drama" will be all but non-existent. Being a young team will have it's advantages as well as disadvantages, however I'm confident they will get the job done.

Michaela Ware is a talent, even better she's a great kid. :thumb:

Huge. Great to have that kind of team unity. Very rare for a girls high school team, or any team, to have no "drama". Please let us know how that goes during and after the season. Good luck.

LB13, where would you rank NC to start the season?

Nice read Lawnboy, good luck to your team and fine group of coaches.

If you add in the 8th and 10th, we are not in the top 10 to start the season.

Who is Sara Neace's pitching coach, if you don't mind me asking. She came a long way preety fast.

She didn't take lessons last year, but got some "pointers" from Danielle Hausfeld who worked with her when she had time. She was taking lessons from Coach Z at Town & Country (not many though) when she could squeeze them in around basketball practice. Alot of the credit to her and her dad for constantly practicing on their own. She is currently taking lessons from a former D1 pitcher who shall remain name less, don't know if she wants this info out here.

Excellent write up. Look forward to seeing the young ladies of NCC in action.

Understandable, good luck to her and your team this year:thumb:
