Bracken County 67 Mason County 65 OT

Brooke Woods last second putback wins it in overtime for BC. Sloppy game, but very competitive. I don't believe Bracken led until overtime.

Sloppy by both teams and the officials. If Bracken lead in regulation, I missed it.

RP, do you have a box score for both teams?

Mason County led this game basically throughout. Sloppy first quarter for both teams, with Mason holding a 9-6 advantage after the 1st quarter. Lady Royals able to take a decent lead at 19-10, mostly with the 3-point shot. Bracken cuts the lead back to five at 20-15 when head coach Patrick Kelsch got T'd up (). Lady Royals hit both FT's, but Bracken was still able to cut the lead down to three at halftime (26-23).

Mason scores the first four points of the 3rd quarter, I believe both baskets by Cara Green. Big play takes place with the score 36-28. Bracken reserve guard Brooke Woods gets a 4-point play, cutting the lead to 36-32. But from there, McKenzie Butler & Alivia Bierley took over, helping give Mason a 45-36 lead after three quarters.

Start of the 4th saw the Lady Royals take their largest lead of 50-38. Emma Conley hit a 3-pointer to bring it back to 50-41. Mason increases it back to 52-41. Bracken won't quit & Jordan Wills' putback makes it 52-45 with 3:46 left. It was at this point that a rowdy Mason County pep section began chanting, "Start the tractor!" I confess to laughing at this, even though it was an insult to my homeland. Of course, the pep section counted their chickens prior to hatching, as the Lady Bears continued to whittle away at the lead. Wills & Mallory Bell did the grunt work & it was Bell's putback at 1:14 that cut the score to 56-54. With around 45 seconds left, Woods got a nice look from the top of the key that would have given the Lady Bears a one-point lead, but the shot rimmed out. Two Butler free throws extended it back to 58-54. Bell answered quickly with a layup with 12.5 seconds left, making it 58-56. Mason County's Alex Berry (I think it was her) hit 1-2 from the charity stripe to make it 59-56. Bracken County freshman Bailey Cummins, who hadn't enjoyed the greatest night up to that point, hit a step-back 3-pointer (yes, a step-back 3-pointer) to tie the game at 59. It was a very, very nice move & shot. Lady Royals call a timeout at around halfcourt with 0.4 left. They get a decent shot off but it hits nothing but backboard.

Lady Bears get the tip in overtime & miss a couple of nice looks. On the ensuing rebound, Cassidy Jefferson is whistled for foul #5, sending her to the bench alongside Wills who had also fouled out. Mason misses the free throw & Bracken responds with a nice post-up basket by senior reserve center Cindy Berry, giving the Lady Bears their first lead of the game at 61-59. Lady Royals answer quickly, only to be answered by a nifty Cummins jumper to make it 63-61 Bracken. Cummins later hits a free throw to move it to 64-61. Lady Royals cut it to 64-63 with a basket at 1:19. Conley hits 1-2 from the stripe with about a minute left to make it 65-63. Lady Royals tie it at the other end, setting up the final possession.

Bracken County dribbles considerable time off the clock before executing its final offensive possession. Brooke Woods gets a nice look from about 15-feet, but misses. She gets her own board, but misses again. Third time is the charm for the junior guard, who scores on a putback as the horn sounds. Final score 67-65. Not quite as exciting as last year's District Championship game (in which Bracken also won), but it was a good one. Sloppy, sloppy play with a lot of unforced turnovers & missed chippies, but still exciting.

Bierley only played 19 minutes for Mason County. She was injured & often rode an exercise bike on the sideline. McKenzie Butler played really well & got to the basket at will. She had 7 turnovers, but she's a solid, solid point guard. Mason shot 76% from the free throw line, but missed some crucial ones down the stretch. Bracken shot 65% from the charity stripe, but hit some big ones down the stretch.

These two teams will most certainly meet again in the postseason. And it will again be held at The Fieldhouse.

On a more somber note, a nice gesture by the Mason County Athletic Dept. to hold a moment of silence tonight in honor of the tragedy in Connecticut.

Other than the 3 to send it to OT, that was the quietest 13 Bailey Cummins will have in her career.

That's why was asking Randy for a box score because this was one of those games where didn't know who had scored what. I thought the Butler girl had 25-30 points. Clutch game at the the end by Bailey, thought Mallory kept BC in it, nice game by her.

I know. I asked him mid 3rd quarter if she had even scored...which she immediately did. They really stepped up last night.
