Ashland coach Buddy Biggs knew his team was coming into a hostile environment. He didn’t expect what happened coming out of it.

 

The Tomcats held Boyd County to under 35 percent shooting to defeat the Lions 77-63 on Friday night at Boyd County Middle School.

 

With a team featuring one player who has had significant minutes in big games, senior Zach Hart, Biggs thought his young squad played almost a perfect game.

 

“I thought we played as good as we could tonight,” Biggs said. “This young of a team, and a lot these guys not playing in this type of environment...for them to come in here and play the way they did, I’m very pleased.”

 

Junior guard Ross Thompson led the Tomcats with 18 points and seven assists.

 

Thompson’s numbers were a result of Ashland’s penetration through dribble drives, and either finding the basket or finding the open man.

 

Ashland had eight 3-pointers in the game, but Thompson also surprised people by using just his 5-foot-10 frame to finish in the paint.

Two players in the top 5, and Boyd County still can't beat Ashland. Perhaps the Lions were a bit overrated in the BGP preview.

They lost at home to an Ashland team that lost 4 seniors, and had only 2 guys who play significant minutes coming back. Meanwhile Boyd County supposdedly had their best team in years, and two of the top players in the region coming back. I think it's save to assume they were overrated. You seemed offended by my post. If you wrote the preview, it's not personal.

I'm not offended at all, nor did I write the preview. I'm just saying it's too early to tell whether they are overrated. And it's not like BGP is the only outfit that ranked the Lions high. Cats Pause had them #2 & Courier Journal #3.

Let me ask you this. Based on their first 7 games, was Kentucky overrated coming into the season?

Of course I think UK was overrated.

 

The issues here are two-fold:

 

1) You said you didn't understand why the writers had Boyd ranked so high. I pointed out that BGP's preview, along with the two largest newspapers in the commonwealth, had the Lions similarly ranked. You also stated that Ashland lost a lot from last season, so I assume you wouldn't have ranked them very high, correct? Is Boyd County #2 in the 16th right now? No. Was there reason to rank them #2 to start the season? Yes.

If you're comfortable comparing the situations at UK & Boyd County, then go right ahead.

 

As I said, and I'll try this one more time...Cats Pause, Courier Journal & BGP all felt like Boyd County was the second or third best team in the region to start the year. I'm assuming a lot of that had to do with the fact that Rowan County lost a lot, Ashland lost a lot (even you acknowledged this), & Boyd has two very solid players in Hunt & Lowe. So you have at least three pretty solid basketball minds coming to essentially the same conclusion.

 

If you can't see that, then I just don't know what else to say.
