Why do some districts seed and other pick out of the hat. What is the fairest way to do the seeding "each and every year" if all the teams play each other during the regular season? And why does the KHSAA let some seed and others draw, if they are all playing in the same tournament and for the same prize?

Each district votes on how to set up their district. If you have a district with several large public schools and several small schools, they will likely never vote to seed because the first round will almost always be big vs. small in the first round. The smaller schools want a small school as a first round opponent, which rarely happens in seeding situations.

 

Two problems with mandated seeding...

 

1.) Right now, you have local public vs. private politics that are keeping the Lexington schools from playing each other. There are other places in the state where this is happening also. Does the KHSAA really want to step in get involved in this? In order to seed, you have to play each other twice, which the Lexington schools in LexCath's district does not do

 

2.) Another situation has been a problem in a western Kentucky district. Christian Fellowship is rarely competitive with the top teams in Region One, including Marshall County, Murray, and Calloway County. Those three teams just happen to be in their district. They also play in a gym that seats 50 people. Marshall County has more people than that attend daily practice. So CFS tells the other schools they will just go ahead and forfeit their district games, take the #4 seed, and avoid the ensuing 90-27 losses that would come with playing the game. That means two fewer games for the other district teams because their games with CFS count as a forfeit.

Okay understand what you are saying about the public/private thing going on right now in Lexington, but in the 35th teams only play each other once and man are those games huge. :fight:

 

But then why, if it isn't fair to the small schools not to have to play the bigger schools in the first round, then why is it fair to make the two best teams in the district be they large or small, play each other in the first round? Is that any fairer?

 

I do think that the Region as a whole should either have seeded Districts or all should pick out of the hat. It isn’t fair to anyone to have some Districts Runner-ups get in the Region just because of the luck of the draw, while the others have to play to get in.

Well now, one day years ago when I was a small lad growing up on the banks of the Ohio River and having nothing to do while fishing (unlike today when I have plenty to do but choose to be on BGP) I started to count and when I got into the thousand, a huge catfish grabbed my bait, and in the excitement I licked but didn't count. The Scribe raises some good questions. However, if all districts are forced to seed, then, all regions should seed the regional tournaments. Then, of course, for consistency of principle, the state tournament must be seeded. You cannot argue to seed at one level and not at all the rest. Therefore, seed them all or don't seed any of them.

I do understand. Why is it fair to seed the district so that the best teams end up in the finals, yet draw for the region tournament and possibly have three stacked teams in one side of the bracket? There is no seeding done at the region level.

Again I agree with you, but what would you use to seed in the Region and more importanly in the State Tournament? Coaches polls, LIT ratings, Cantrel ratings?????

 

At least in the District you usually play one another at least once. I just hate seeing two teams who are the class of the District (I really don't care large, small, public, private) having to play each other in the first round and having a team get in just because of the luck of the draw and then in the Region some winner from another District get a walkover to get into the second round.

If you advance, you claim your seeding, then set up the region tournament 1-8 in their seeding order.

 

However, the bottom line is this. In order to advance to Lexington, you have to beat good teams at some point. Does it really matter when?

Again I agree..... but darn I hate to see the little sisters of the poor, or the school on the creek then make the Region and boast about it, when everybody knows they couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

I agree. Mandate it and either make them play or forfeit. That's pretty simple.

 

The KHSAA shouldn't see this issue as "wet-dry" vote similar to the local option liquor sales.

Beating good teams has to happen somewhere.

 

The problem is in the Regional because while you are beating a good team your next opponent is playing the starters one quarter and the JV 3 quarters because some cupcake got in by drawing another cupcake in the districts.
