Playing time has nothing to do with it. This is all about winning ball games, and if Coach Hackett don't win A District or Region in the the time that Coach Combs had. He will be replaced too. Coach Combs is gone theirs nothing that can be done about it. Water under the bridge. The thread is about Coach Hackett. It's not his fault that Coach Combs is gone. I just would like for everyone to at least give him a chance. Yes he's a first time coach, so was Matt Ginter last year, and you seen what he was able to do.

Combs leaving had nothing to do with wins or losses. I believe it was a winning season every season except the first with over 500 each. There are not many coaches in the state that has his record. Nothing against Hackett, he just has no experience and he is walking into a mess that was made by the people that are still in charge.

I believe they are doing something about the AD. I think Phil Rison is going to take more of a lead role in all sports programs. Coach Combs had a great year last year but in a 4 team district he came in 3rd. I could be wrong on this but in the 6 years that Combs was there I think he has gone to Region once and that was the first or second year he was coach. You can have a lot of wins when you play a patsy schedule. As far as being a yes man how many people that works for someone in any job isn't? When you argue with the boss most of the time the boss wins. Even if the boss is wrong.

2008 13-15 Lost to BC 1st game of District

 

2009 15-10 Lost to BC 1st game of District. Most talented team Combs had from top to bottom. This team had 4 to 5 solid high school pitchers, good speed and solid defense.

 

2010 14-15 lost 1st game of District to BC. toughest schedule Combs played while at MC they played at least 5 teams that year ranked in the top 15 in the state.

 

2011 12-8 Lost 1st game of District to GRC

 

 

2012 22-13 Lost 1st game of Distirct to GRC. Weakest scheduled played in all the six years.

 

Total 83-83 for the last 6 years.

Big Kat I agree with what you say. If the parents treat Hackett like they did Combs he won't stay very long. I have been told that Rison was taking over for the past 3 months and he hasn't been removed yet. Phil Rison would have got a coach with experience who would have loved to coach this team with the talent they have. You have a coach that played at Auburn which is impressive but his coaching experience is a 12 yr old all star team. You get rid of a coach with over 400 wins because parents wrote multiple letters because their child wasn't playing. Combs had Asst Coaches that stuck a knive in his back so many times it isn't funny. You better get rid of all the asst coaches who had kids on the team. One was a waste of space and I'm told by one parent that the other was a good baseball coach but he did have issues with Combs in the past. A coach from another County told me it would take an idiot to wan't to coach at MC because of the Administration. Let's hope Lee and Newkirk can lead this team back and they find a flame thrower for a pitcher. Good Luck to Coach Tackett. I wish you well.

I am sure that MC expected more than 83-83 and 1 trip to the region in 6 years. Not many years ago Montgomery was a regular in the region and a real contender.

You are correct Ky Thorobred, a lot of talent has gone through there in past 6 years and only 1 region trip is ashame. MC should have been in the region at the least 3 if not 4 of the 6 years and won the district 2 of the 6 years. Last year should have been MC's best chance for a district championship due to the 40th being down a little bit.

 

Here's another thing, I hope Coach Tackett gets Harrison Co. Back on the schedule, MC and HC should be playing at least one game every year, as well as Bishop Brosett and Campbell Co. Year in and year out, along with GRC and BC, these are 6 best teams in the 10th and they should play at least one game a year against each other.

Also,MC should also be playing a couple of Lexington schools each year (40 miles away) and get away from the 14th region schedule they've been playing. You only get better by playing getter competition.

KHSAA does not have the complete schedule or game results listed for Combs. School had it...85-87 with 78-6

Sorry...78-65 in past 5 yrs..last yr was 23-13 and was not the weakest schedule. Past two years lost in district in extra inning to Clark by 1 run. Last year Clark went on to win Region. Harrison will not schedule...not Combs..will not come here. Most Lexington teams will not travel here either. Want MC to come to them but too far to travel to MC. As far as 14th Region...I am sure Powell who lost to the state champs in extra innings this year(who we beat 2 x) does not think they are weak. I am all for MC having a great next year but when I say people in charge..I am talking about parents and administration. Tackett like Combs will only have those kids for 2-3 hours a day...when they get home and mommy and daddy undo everything that the coach tries to do...MC will never win a district there is no I in team!

Cataholic; I agree with most everything you said, except Coach Combs kept the players 6 hours a day. Just ask any player that ever played for him. I think he lost some good talent because of the long hours. It was hard for the boys to keep up with their home work and have any kind of life outside of baseball. 2 or 3 hours should be enough.

Until the past couple of years Montgomery County has not had a lot of talent that went through their system other than Drew Lee and a couple of others. Harrison County has had most of the talent in the 10th Region. I am not real thrilled about MC new Coach but I think he deserves a chance to see what he can do with this talented team.

You're right about the talent that went through. I'm talking about the talent that didn't even try out for high school baseball. I remember the team that Kevin Lee had at the American Legion. All of those kids, if they all stayed together I wonder how that team would have done. They had a lot of talent on that team.

Talked to some of the players BK and none of them said they practiced six hours a day. So, I do not know where that came from but anyway this thread is about the future right? Kevin Lee ' s team had Half the kids from other counties...that is why it was so good...when you can pick the best of the best. Kind of like the team that the Thomas kid is playing on now. All the kids have the choice to try out????

Cataholic; I'm talking about The Montgomery Co. kids that was on that team. Kids like Jacob Hill, Tanner Dice, Max Baker, Omar Prewitt and a few more. This was one of his first teams. The name of the team was the Brave's. Not the Rolling Thunder. The Brave's beat the Rockers every time they played them. The Rockers was made up of kids mostly from Woodfort Co. and they won the state this year. About the six hours.I didn't have to talk to any players about this because I know from having to pick my son up from practice. He gets out of school around 3:30 goes stright to the field and I don't pick him up till 10:00 on some nights. You do the math.

Well Big Kat I do not know who your kid is but the ones that played and I spoke to said they never were there after 9 for practice unless they started late or working on field. Never practiced for 6 hours and never had two a days like some other sports at the school. School is not out until 3:30, practice begins around 4 and ended around 7:30. From what I hear was very structured with stations to move through to work on fundamentals everyday. Anyway, would not matter, some parents would say too much practice, some not enough. On the other statement related to the kids that quit baseball, that is their choice. It would be great if they could continue to play all sports throughout their high school career but a lot comes down to the child preference because of sports going year round. If their in basketball, soccer, or football it is hard to compete at the next level unless you begin to"specialize" in one sport in high school. It is very competitive. Yes, it is a shame they did not choose baseball but that was not the coaches fault.
