Basketball season for 2012/2013 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Southwestern ? Remember, please be constructive.

Southwestern will be one of the 12th region favorites. They return David Kapinga(Jr-PG), Justin Edwards(Jr-SF), Isaiah Collier(So-SG) and I believe Justin Schultz?(Sr-SG). These four will guide Southwestern deep into the postseason. They'll be fun to watch and fun to follow.

Southwestern will have another top team in the 12th region this coming season. They will return 4 of their 5 starters from their sweet sixteen final four team, but they lost a lot of senior leadership, depth, size, and strength. The starting 5 return 2 potential D1 players in Kapinga(Jr) and Edwards(Jr) along with Shultz(Sr) and Collier(So). All 4 of these players prefer the perimeter but Edwards will probably be moved to the 5 position unless Dylan Gaskin(So) steps up to fill the role. If not, Adam Isaacs(So) will more than likely be the other starter (Wouldn't it be nice if a stud big man just happened to enroll at Southwestern this fall to fill the weakness this team will have next season). Other than those six there is not a lot of experience so depth will be a big issue if SW plan to play the aggressive D they did last season. This team should be a top 3 region team this year with a good chance to play again in Rupp.

Much appreciated, my friend. The feeling is mutual. I am glad you posted because I have to ask since you are in Somerset. Who will be the best team in Somerset? Pulaski County, Somerset or Southwestern? There should be some intense games around your way this winter. Now that my son has graduated I plan on traveling to the big 12th region games this season.

Lots of rumors going around this town right now so my answer will be based on what the teams consist of at this time. Pulaski will be the best team but the loss of Coach Cothron to Somerset will hurt them some. He was a big factor in that team. SWHS should be #2 and Somerset #3. Don't be surprised if SHS get a win or even 2 over these cross town rivals. They are really enthused with the new coach and will have the most depth of the 3 schools. All of the games between the schools should be exciting to see. I see Pulaski as the best team in the region, SWHS in the top 3 and Somerset in the top 7 with a chance of top 5.

David Kapinga holds two offers

It’s been a crazy year for David Kapinga.

 

The junior-to-be at Pulaski Southwestern is a native of the Congo but spent two years in Alberta, Canada before coming to the U.S.

 

The 5-foot-10 Kapinga said it’s been “so great” since he’s been in the Bluegrass State. He’s adjusted to life in the U.S. and is excelling on the hardwood.

 

“It’s been so much fun,” said Kapinga.

 

And for good reason. He helped Southwestern to a 29-9 record and spot in the Sweet 16 final four. Kapinga averaged 14.6 points and 4.5 assists a game.

 

He’s playing for Hoop Dreams and helped the team to the State AAU 16s title last month and this comes after only two years of organized ball.

 

Kapinga has played so well the colleges have taken note. He said he has offers from Western Kentucky and BYU with looks from Eastern Kentucky, Alabama and Northern Kentucky among others.

 

“I’m having fun,” he said.

Congrats to Kapinga, i have seen very few high school kids that play as hard as he does for FOUR quarters. He pressures the ball and then is asked to create on offense, most of you on here are as old as i am, and you can remember what kinda conditioning that would take. I enjoy seeing kids play HARD in any sport whether they have talent or not, i become instant fans of high shcool kids that lay it on the line every play, regardless of what sport they are playing.

It's hard to watch Kapinga play and not fall in love with the kid and his game. When he went down in the Trinity game you knew it was over for Southwestern. I think it was a 6 point Trinity lead when he got hurt. Kapinga is a player and I look forward to watching him over the next two years and beyond.
