St. Henry 4 Newport Central Catholic 0 (9th Region All "A")

Recommended Posts

The Breds defense and lack of timely hitting do them in. Although St. Henry's Mamee Salzer did a GREAT job of keeping the NewCath hitters off balance. NewCath's Taylor Burkart gives up 2 hits in the 1st and just one more in the 6th to take the hard luck loss. St. Henry's Noelle Butts drives in all 4 runs on a "monster shot" 3 run HR and sac fly.

The Breds get 1 hit in the 1st and strand that runner. In the St. Henry 1st, Burkart throws out the 1st batter on a bunt attempt and then gives up a single (and then steals 2nd), the next batter flys out to left. Then trouble, the clean up hitter Ives hits one to NewCath third baseman Loren Zimmerman who boots the ball, but recovers and applies the tag to the on coming runner from 2nd but the ball comes out of her glove on the tag. Up steps Noelle Butts and she promptly drives one to the 260 sign in left-center, this ball travels a good 240 feet in the air before touching the ground, for a 3 run homer. The next batter grounds out to Burkart, but the damage is done.

The Breds load the bases in the 2nd on two hits and a walk. With nobody out Kristen Schreiber walks, Burkart hits a slow roller to 3rd, and Michaela Ware lays down a prefect bunt, but Salzer gets two straight K's and a pop-up to 2nd to end the threat. In the St. Henry 3rd the leadoff hitter pops out to Burkart, she then hits a batter, the next hitter flys to leftfield and the ball is dropped. The next batter walks and up steps Butts who flys out to center and the throw home is not in time, and the next batter grounds out to 3rd. The Breds next serious threat came in the 6th, Paige Immegart hits a "laser" to left that is dropped and after a strikeout, Taylor Burkart hits one to 3rd that is stopped from making leftfield by a diving stop, but a K and a ground out to Salzer ends it. Would like to mention, NewCath's freshman catcher Kristen Schreiber, who erased 2 consecutive runners at 2nd, continues to do one SUPER job behind the plate for a Breds pitching staff that is still learning the craft.

Congrats to St. Henry, they played a great game and should easily win the Tourney IMO.:thumb:

Lawnboy13-thanks for the report. Is the "A" a draw or what format are teams selected to play against each other. Tough draw for both St. Henry and NCC in this one. Congrats to St. Henry on the win.
