Springtime in Paris can be a wonderful thing. Espcecially if you wear green and it's St. Patrick's Day. Just ask the Lady 'Stangs of Bishop Brossart who traveled south today for their annual pre-season scrimmage with Bourbon County in Paris, Ky.

The Lady Colonels of Bourbon Co. are considered by many to challenge Montgomery Co. as the top team in the 10th Region this year, especially with George Rogers Clark in a youth movement and mostly a new pitching staff. Today a young Bishop Brossart team gave notice that they should be in the conversation as a top team again. They haven't rebulit they have just reloaded AGAIN. They beat Bourbon County 8-3 in a game they led from beginning to end.

“We like playing top competition,” says new Bishop Brossart Head Coach Tom Baynum. “These scrimmages will only make us better and help us to learn where we are at. The big thing is to work on things.” They actually had an offer to go to Ryle had the game been rained out in Paris. The Lady 'Stangs found out they could bunt and hit in the clutch. They batted 1.000 in bunt attempts Saturday and .750 in rbi situations with two out. That was huge.

They started their attack against Bourbon Co. ace Haley Wagner in the third when senior Taylor Hardy lined a single to right and was replaced by pinch runner Caroline Woeste. Shannon Kremer then beat out an infield bunt attempt before Tricia Kramer beat out an infield hit to score Woeste. Erica Riedeman then laid down a perfect bunt and a throwing error plated Kremer. Following a walk to cleanup hitter Gretchen Trumbo, senior Molly Williams blasted a shot thru the middle to make it 4-0 Brossart.

Later that inning Bourbon would get within one scoring three and making it 4-3. Hannah Wagner and Candace Green had nice hits for the Lady Colonels. However the fifth would see Brossart returning the favor by scoring four more.

Freshmen pitcher Karlie Shackelford and sophomore thirdbaseman Gretchen Trumbo opened the inning with a hits. Williams followed with a double to score two and then sophomore shortstop singled and it was 7-3. Emily Greis reached on a fielders choice and then moments later Kremer lined her second hit of the game to right to make it 8-3. Greis was playing in her sister Maria's place who was out today. Maria was the team's cleanup hitter in the first scrimmage.

Bishop Brossart had 8 hits, three perfect bunts, hit in the clutch and played near flawless defense.

Shackelford turned in a second solid performance in the preseason keeping the Bourbon hitters off stride by scattering 5 hits over 7 innings and striking out 5. In fourteen pre-season innings she has shown great control hitting her spots and walking only one batter.

While the early season game means little in the standings playing good teams does make you prepared. The Reds' Dusty Baker said today “Preseason is training for a reason. It's training.”

On a beautiful day in Paris the training seems to have paid off. Now it's time for the regular season.
