  1. The only thing more impressive than Newport's scheduling upgrade this season, was their response to it. They faced five eventual region champions, including three in a row during the King of the Bluegrass.
  2. Those results will inspire confidence in the Pulaski faithful, but won't inspire much concern in T supporters. Comparing scores is even less reliable in basketball than football, and Vasser didn't play in Trinity's loss to J-Town.
  3. Newport Wildcats (32-3, R9 Champion, Media Poll #3) | Campbell County Camels (26-6, R10 Champion) Noteworthy Results Newport - Beat Cooper twice, by margins of 6 and 7, including the R9 final | Beat R2 Champion Lyon County by 2 | Beat R6 Champion Evangel Christian by 7 | Beat R8 Champion Spencer County by 13 | Lost to R11 Champion and state #1 Great Crossing by 2 | Lost to R7 Champion Trinity by 5 | Lost to Covington Catholic by 10 Campbell County - Beat R16 Champion Ashland by 14 | Split the season series with George Rogers Clark 1-1 | Lost to Cooper by 8 | Lost to Covington Catholic by 23 | Lost to North Oldham by 23 Player Spotlight Newport - Taylen Kinney (18 ppg/65 3s/83% FTs) | Jabari Covington (12.6 ppg) | Deshaun Jackson (11 ppg/6 rpg/54.5% FGs) Kinney lights the fuse for the Wildcats, but may be hampered by the lingering effect of a lower body injury suffered in the R9 final. Covington and Jackson stepped up to carry Newport to a region title in his absence, proving they're more than a backup band, they can sing lead. Campbell County - Connor Weinel (15.7 ppg/10 rpg/57.4% FGs) | Broc Sorgenfrei (12.7 ppg/56 3s) | Garyn Jackson (11.6 ppg/65% FGs) Weinel logged 26 & 12 in the R10 final. He's working on eleven consecutive games of double digit rebounds, averaging 12.2 over that span. Sorgenfrei and Jackson combined for seven threes and 47 points in the R10 semifinal takedown of GRC.
  4. Trinity Shamrocks (26-7, R7 Champion, Media Poll #6) | Pulaski County Maroons (23-10, R12 Champion) Noteworthy Results Trinity - Beat R3 Champion Butler County by 27 | Lost to Bowling Green by 2 | Beat R9 Champion Newport by 5 | Split the season series with St. X 1-1 | Lost to Lexington Catholic by 10 | Beat Manual by 12 Pulaski County - Beat Wayne County by 14 | Lost to Henry Clay by 6 | Lost to LaRue County by 22 | Beat Clay County by 20 | Split the season series with Somerset 2-2, including the R12 final Player Spotlight Trinity - Drae Vasser (14 ppg/51% FGs) | Julius Edmonds (12 ppg/7.7 rpg/67% FGs) | Jayden Johnson (12 ppg/69 3s) Vasser is one of the more dynamic guards you'll see on the floor this week. He's capable behind the arc, but excels in transition and penetrating in the half court, shooting 62% on 2pt FGs. Pulaski County - Will Blankenship (15 ppg/86.3% FTs) | Zak Anderson (10.7 ppg/8 rpg) Blankenship averaged 20 ppg to lead the Maroons to a second straight 12th Region title. Anderson is a jack of all trades, who provides toughness on the interior.
  5. Evangel Christian Eagles (29-6, R6 Champion, Media Poll #9) | Butler County Bears (23-8, R3 Champion) Noteworthy Results Evangel Christian - Lost to North Oldham by 10 | Beat R5 Champion Adair County by 18 | Beat Pikeville by 15 | Lost to R9 Champion Newport by 7 | Lost to Bowling Green by 5 | Beat Fairdale by 10 in R6 final Butler County - Lost to R7 Champion Trinity by 27 | Lost to R13 Champion Harlan County by 19 | Lost to St. X by 3 | Lost to R4 Champion Warren Central by 4 | Beat Owensboro Catholic by 16 in R3 final Player Spotlight Evangel Christian - Kyran Tilley (18 ppg/73 3s) | Christian Doerr (17.3 ppg/56.6% FGs) The Eagles like to get up and down, with Tilley and Doerr as the offensive catalysts. Tilley's a shot maker that gets'em off from all angles and turns turnovers into points in a blur. Doerr brings a fluid, all-court game to the table that plays well off the kinetic energy of Tilley. Butler County - Ty Price (29.6 ppg/143 3s) | Lawson Rice (18 ppg/11 rpg/62% FGs) Price is one of the state's most prolific scorers and three point shooters, tallying nearly 2,000 points over the last two seasons and connecting on more threes this year than anyone not named Travis Perry. He dropped 30+ on the three fellow region champions the Bears played in the regular season. Lawson Rice is a double-double machine and, like Price, an All-3rd Region selection this year.
  6. Noteworthy Results Warren Central - Lost to R2 Champion Lyon County by 13 | Beat R3 Champion Butler County by 4 | Beat R5 Champion Adair County by 6 | Lost to Lexington Catholic by 16 | Lost 2/3 to Bowling Green, but won the R4 final Harlan County - Beat R16 Champion Ashland by 10 | Lost to Bowling Green by 11 | Beat R3 Champion Butler County by 19 | Beat Male by 6 | Beat Woodford County by 6 | Beat Boyd County by 18 | Beat Corbin twice, including the R13 final Player Spotlight Warren Central - Kade Unseld (15.7 ppg/7 rpg/45% on 3pt FGs) | Elijah Starks (17 ppg/9.5 rpg/57.5% FGs) | Drevin Bratton (14 ppg/7 rpg/59% FGs) It's been a rollercoaster season, but this formidable trio has the Dragons back on the same floor where last season ended. They're long, with a wide ranging skill set. Unseld's perimeter stroke has been dialed in during the season's latter stages, connecting on 56% of his threes over the last eight games. Harlan County - Trent Noah (29.7 ppg/10.5 rpg) | Maddox Huff (17.6 ppg/46% on 3pt FGs) The 6’6” Noah, a South Carolina commit, is a difficult matchup for anyone. He can handle, shoot, and has a full arsenal at the offensive end. Huff plays off of Noah well, and is capable of filling it up if a defense over commits to Noah. Exhibit A: the R13 final, where Noah got off eight shots, while Huff buried five threes and scored 24.
  7. Great Crossing Warhawks (34-1, R11 Champion, Consensus State #1) | Spencer County Bears (25-9, R8 Champion) Noteworthy Results Great Crossing - Beat Lexington Catholic twice, including the R11 Final | Beat R9 champion Newport by 2 | Beat Covington Catholic | Beat R16 champion Ashland by 13 | Beat George Rogers Clark by 20 | Beat Manual by 8 | Beat Male by 2 Spencer County - Lost to R9 champion Newport by 13 | Beat Oldham County by 12 | Spit the season series 1-1 against Woodford County | Beat Male by 2 | Lost to Fairdale by 2 Player Spotlight Great Crossing - Malachi Moreno (16 ppg/13 rpg/66% FGs) | Vince Dawson (18.4 ppg/54% FGs) Two future D1 guys, with Moreno rated as one of the top centers in the country. He has the potential to impact everything that happens within ten feet of the basket against a smaller Bears line-up. Dawson has developed a rep for playing at a high level in the biggest games, as evidenced by his 20 ppg average in the games listed above and the game winning three to bury LexCath in the 11th Region final. They're all big games now. Spencer County - Luke Erhardt (20 ppg/110 3s) | Camden Cox (15.3 ppg/100 3s) | Keaton Baird (13 ppg/6 rpg/59% FGs) Erhardt and Cox form a fearsome perimeter shooting duo. They're the only pair of teammates in the state with over 100 three point makes each. Baird is a 6’5” athlete who's dangerous in transition.
  8. Adair County Indians (28-7, R5 Champion) | Marshall County Marshals (25-7, R1 Champion) Noteworthy Results Adair County - Beat Bethlehem by 18 in R5 Final | Lost to R6 Champion Evangel Christian by 18 | Beat Woodford County by 12 | Lost to R4 Champion Warren Central by 6 | Lost to R2 Champion Lyon County by 50 Marshall County - Split the season series 2-2 with McCracken County, including winning the R1 Final | Beat Murray by 3 for D4 Championship Player Spotlight Adair County - Isaiah Cochran (17 ppg/9 rpg/55% FG) | Connor Loy (17.5 ppg/62% on 2pt FGs) Both are juniors, so don't write the Indians off as a one and done representative from the 5th Region. Cochran shined in the R5 final, posting a 29/12/5 line against Bethlehem. Loy averaged 20 ppg against Evangel Christian, Wofo, Warren Central, and Lyon County. Marshall County - Alex Staples (15 ppg/51% FGs) | Matthew Langhi (13 ppg/5 rpg) This duo will also be back next season. Langhi, a 6'5" frosh, looks like a player we'll be hearing a lot about over the next few years. You can't go wrong with either at the free throw line in crunch time, as both shoot 80% or better from the charity stripe.
  9. Lyon County Lyons (32-3, R2 Champion, Media Poll #4) | Ashland Tomcats (23-10, R16 Champion) Noteworthy Results Lyon County - Beat 4th Region champion Warren Central by 13 | Lost to 9th Region champion Newport by 2 | Beat 5th Region champion Adair County by 50 | Beat Lexington Catholic by 20 | Beat Bowling Green by 1 in 2OT | Beat Henderson County by 12 for region title Ashland - Lost to 13th Region champion Harlan County by 10 | Lost to 10th Region champion Campbell County by 14 | Beat 15th Region champion Magoffin County twice, by margins of 24 and 14 | Lost to Covington Catholic by 7 | Beat Pikeville by 25 | Lost to 11th Region champion and state #1 Great Crossing by 13 | Beat Boyd County by 14 for region title Player Spotlight Lyon County - Travis Perry (29.5 ppg/170 3s) | Brady Shoulders (17.7 ppg/10.3 rpg) As the commonwealth's all-time scoring king, Perry needs no introduction. The Mr. Basketball favorite spearheads the state's top scoring offense with a state leading 170 makes from behind the arc. Shoulders plays the Robin role for the Lyons, but he'd be Batman for most teams around the state, including some that are still playing. Ashland - Zander Carter (22.7 ppg/6.5 rpg/53.5% FGs) Carter has an underrated supporting cast that can shoot, run in transition, and defend - as Boyd County found out in the 16th Region final. But the 6'6" Liberty University commit is the straw that stirs the drink for the Tomcats.
  10. Magoffin County Hornets (21-13, R15 Champion) | Perry Central Commodores (22-13, R14 Champion) Noteworthy Results Magoffin County - Lost to Perry Central by 5 on 12/1 | Lost to 16th Region champion Ashland twice, by margins of 24 and 14 | Lost to Pikeville by 15 | Beat Martin County for region title Perry Central - Beat Magoffin County by 5 on 12/1 | Lost to 13th Region Champion Harlan County by 18 | Lost to Boyd County by 16 | Lost three times to Hazard, by margins of 16, 3, and 7 | Beat Breathitt County for region title Player Spotlight Magoffin County - Aden Barnett (29.4 ppg/56% FGs) Barnett is Magoffin County's all-time leading scorer with over 3,500 career points across six seasons of varsity basketball. He hits the floor of Rupp Arena after averaging 33 points per game in the quarters, semis, and finals of the 15th's super regional to deliver Magoffin's first ever region title. Perry Central - Kizer Slone (15.5 ppg/6.5 rpg) | Trayten Woods (15.3 ppg/47.5% on 3pt FGs) | Carter Castle (14 ppg/65% FGs) Where as Magoffin County relies heavily on the work of Barnett, the Commodores distribute the bulk of their production between the trio of Slone, Woods, and Castle. Woods provides the perimeter threat, Castle works the interior, and Slone gives you a little of everything.
  11. Nelson, a former standout running back at North Laurel, takes the reins of the NL program after previously serving on the coaching staff at Rockcastle County.
  12. Regina was before my time and no doubt a great player. Perhaps most accomplished is more appropriate for Steele? All-time scorer (possibly rebounder too), three region titles, and a major college commit. I don't know if anyone at Russell can match that.
  13. Tough way to go out for the Devils. McCracken is a really good team, but Russell has to walk away from this with a bad taste in its mouth, knowing they're capable of much more. It sounded like they had plenty of good looks offensively, but couldn't find the bottom of the net. Shooting 2/19 from three won't get it done in the state tournament. I've drifted in and out of following Russell over the last few years. I was mostly "in" this season and enjoyed every minute of it. Russell girls basketball couldn't be in better hands than those of Mandy Layne. It's hard to believe today was the final chapter in Shaelyn Steele's career in the maroon and gold. Best girls player ever to come through there and arguably the best basketball player, period. She's cast a long shadow and created a legacy that hopefully inspires future Lady Devils to strive for the same greatness.
  14. Today was a good look for her, if the voters were watching. Head to head, she got the better of another candidate and ended her season.
  15. How about that defensive effort by the Tomcats? Maybe the best we saw around the state tonight. Very few good looks for Boyd County, the state's #3 scoring team. This was a season low for points and only the fourth time all season they failed to reach 60. "Offense wins games, defense wins championships" Ashland held its three region tournament opponents to an average of 44 ppg.
