  1. It’s playoff time and we have gotten to the win-or-go-home, survive-and-advance part of the season. There are a couple of state title contenders in the Lexington/Central Kentucky Area and there a couple with a chance to make a deep run as well. Things get kicked off this weekend for round one of the playoffs and one team even has a BYE this week. Let’s see what’s cracking....... Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A, 10-0) Frederick Douglass finished off an undefeated regular season by defeating Conner 20-0. They will face Pleasure Ridge Park at home in round one. 2. Boyle County(3A, 10-0) Boyle County defeated Mercer County 42-2 to finish off their undefeated regular season. They will face Floyd Central at home to kick off the playoffs this Friday night. 3. Scott County(6A, 7-3) Scott County had a BYE last week and they will begin their playoff adventures on the road at Campbell County this Friday night. 4. Anderson County(5A, 10-0) Anderson County also finished their regular season undefeated as they easily disposed of North Oldham by the score of 45-6. They have a first round BYE this week and they will most likely face Highlands on November 9th at home. 5. Lexington Catholic(3A, 7-3) Lexington Catholic defeated Southwestern 39-17 last week. They will face Pike County Central at home in the first round of the playoffs. 6. Taylor County(4A, 9-1) Taylor County finished the regular season on a 7 game winning streak. They defeated Green County 57-8 last week and will face Western at home this Friday night to start the playoffs. 7. Montgomery County(5A, 8-2) Montgomery County finished the regular season with a 54-26 victory over Lincoln County. They will face Dixie Heights at home in the first round of the playoffs. 8. Franklin County(4A, 8-2) Franklin County finished the season on a 6 game winning streak. They defeated Tates Creek 35-19 last Friday night and they will face Russell County at home to begin the playoffs. 9. Madison Central(6A, 7-3) Madison Central ended the season with a puzzling 41-21 loss to Bryan Station. They will get a chance to quickly bounce back as they will face Seneca at home this Friday night to start the playoffs. 10. George Rogers Clark(6A, 7-3) George Rogers Clark sneaks back into the Top Ten after a 40-0 victory over Bourbon County. They will face Cooper this Friday night at home to start the playoffs. Be On The Lookout For: Frankfort(1A, 7-3) Frankfort has a 5 game winning streak heading into the playoffs. They have a good chance to make it to the third round. They have a first round BYE this week. Lexington Christian(2A, 7-3) Lexington Christian is looking to avenge a previous loss to Somerset. Their bracket sets up for it to possibly happen. They face Prestonburg at home this Friday to start the playoffs. Western Hills(3A, 7-3) Western Hills has a chance to make a run in the playoffs but it won’t be easy. Their first step begins Friday on the road at Lawrence County. Last Week’s Game of the Week: Lexington Catholic 39 Southwestern 17 Beau Allen threw for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns as Lexington Catholic had zero issues with putting Southwestern away last Friday night. There was some speculation as to whether or not Southwestern rested some players but looking at the game stats it appears as though not many regulars sat last Friday night. Southwestern was able to run for over 200 yards against Lexington Catholic but it is clear they didn’t have any answers for the passing attack of Lexington Catholic as this Game of the Week did not live up to the hype. Game of the Week: Breckinridge County at Mercer County. This game interests me as one of the first round games that might be close. Both of these teams have way more success running the ball than passing the ball so I expect this game to be a quickly played game. Mercer County has a better run defense than Breckinridge County and with this being a home game for Mercer County things should play into their hands. We all know things never work out that way though. Both teams are 4-6 entering this game and I am intrigued to see which one will leave 5-6. Player of the Week: Reed Lanter-Boyle County-17-18 passing, 304 yards, 4 Top Performers: Xavier Brown-Lexington Christian-120 yards rushing, 3 TDs Charles Collins-Anderson County-205 yards rushing, 3 TDs Azariah Israel-George Rogers Clark-153 yards rushing, 3 TDs Dearious Smith-Lexington Christian-141 yards receiving, 1 TD Reese Smith-Boyle County-114 yards receiving, 2 TDs Player of the Year: Wandale Robinson-Western Hills I’m naming this one early because Wandale is clearly the only choice. It will be a travesty of epic proportions if he doesn’t win Mr. Football. Yearly stats: 8-10 passing, 173 yards, 2 TDs 1844 yards rushing, 28 TDs 493 yards receiving, 9 TDs 3-2 point conversions 105 tackles(11 TFL) 1 sack 6 forced fumbles 1 fumble recovery 3 interceptions 54 yard fumble recovery TD 134 interception return yards, 1 interception return TD 41 total TDs Side note: Congratulations to Berea for their win last week. They defeated Jellico(TN) 18-0 for their first victory in 43 games. Their last previous win came against Lynn Camp on October 10, 2014. (credit to Dan Rieffer)
  2. As we wind down to the end of the season the chance for movement continues to get more slim each week. George Rogers Clark has exited the top ten and Franklin County has joined the ranks of the top ten this week. Other than that the teams remain the same with a little bit of adjusting due to Henry Clay losing their starting quarterback and clearly being a whole new team without him. As we enter the last week of the regular season there aren’t many intriguing matchups and most teams are focusing on team health instead of team success in this final week of the regular. Let’s jump right in. Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A, 9-0)Frederick Douglas defeated Henry Clay 36-3 to claim the top spot in their district. They will finish the regular season on the road at Conner this Friday night. 2. Boyle County(3A, 9-0) Boyle County defeated Western Hills 54-35 in a closer-than-the-score-indicates thriller. Boyle County will finish the regular season against Mercer County at home this Thursday night. 3. Scott County(6A, 7-3) Scott County defeated Pleasure Ridge Park 44-18. They have completed their regular season schedule and will face Campbell County on the road in the first round of the playoffs on November 2. 4. Anderson County(5A, 9-0) Anderson County defeated Madison Southern 40-7. They will finish their regular season on the road at North Oldham this Friday night. 5. Lexington Catholic(3A, 6-3) Lexington Catholic defeated Garrard County 39-22. Lexington Catholic will finish their regular season at home against Southwestern this Friday night. 6. Taylor County(4A, 8-1) Taylor County defeated Marion County 62-6. Taylor County will finish their regular season at home against Green County. 7. Henry Clay(6A, 5-4) Henry Clay lost to Frederick Douglass 36-3. Henry Clay will finish their regular season on the road at Cooper this Friday night. 8. Madison Central(6A, 7-2) Madison Central defeated George Rogers Clark 31-7. Madison Central will finish their regular season on the road at Bryan Station this Friday night. 9. Montgomery County(5A, 7-2) Montgomery County defeated Woodford County 48-20. Montgomery County will finish up their regular season at home against Lincoln County. 10. Franklin County(4A, 7-2) Franklin County defeated North Oldham 47-14. Franklin County will finish up their regular season on the road at Tates Creek. Be On The Lookout For: George Rogers Clark lost to Madison Central 31-7 last week. They will finish the regular season against at home against Bourbon County. Lexington Christian defeated Danville 14-13 last week. They finish the regular season on the road at Estill County. Lincoln County defeated South Laurel 35-23 last week. They finish the regular season on the road at Montgomery County. Game of the Week: Southwestern at Lexington Catholic High powered offense meets stout defense in this matchup as Lexington Catholic hosts Southwestern this Friday night in this week’s Game of the Week. Southwestern has been a strong running team this year and we all know that Lexington Catholic has faced difficulties stopping the run with success. Lexington Catholic will use their high powered passing attack to test a Southwestern defense that is giving up an average of about 11 points per game to opposing teams this year. With Southwestern losing their first game of the season last week, I have to imagine that they will be playing this game to win as they look to regain some mojo heading into the playoffs. This is a great matchup for both teams as they look to work out some things heading into November. Last Week’s Game of the Week: George Rogers Clark at Madison Central Madison Central dominated this game as they won 31-7 and secured the top seed in the district. For maybe the first time all season Madison Central finished the game with more passing yards than rushing yards and used one of their more balanced attacks to win this game. George Rogers Clark couldn’t get anything going and Nitavius Thomas was neutralized from the start of the game. I thought this game would be a much closer, competitive game. I was wrong about that. Player of the Week: Reese Smith-Boyle County- 105 yards receiving, 3 TDs, 8 tackles, 1 interception, 100 yard interception return TD Top Performers: Chase Blanton-Harrison County- 201 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 4 tackles(3 TFL) Jalen Burbage-Bryan Station- 114 yards rushing, 3 TDs DaJuan Davis-Frankfort- 259 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 18 yards receiving, 19 tackles Darius Napier-Lincoln County- 203 yards rushing, 2TDs, 32 yards receiving, 4 tackles Will Vernon-Lexington Christian- 134 yards receiving, 1 TD Wandale Robinson Watch: His latest stats haven’t been updated to the KHSAA scoreboard so for this week we only have his yearly stats. I do know that he finished strong against Boyle County but I don’t have his official stats for last week’s game. Yearly stats: 8-10 passing, 173 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT 1560 yards rushing, 25 TDs 367 yards receiving, 7 TDs 35 total TDs 3-2 point conversations 85 tackles(10 TFL) 1 sack 5 forced fumbles 3 interceptions, 134 interception return yards, 1 interceptions return TD
  3. The playoffs are underway things are changing rapidly. The unknown will happen and uncertainty is in the air. What we thought we knew about teams is no longer true. Coaches and players are getting less sleep as the fight to continue the season is getting more intense with each play. In the Lexington/Central Kentucky Area that intensity is going to step up a notch this week. Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A) Frederick Douglass defeated Pleasure Ridge Park 42-8. Next up: home vs Scott County 2. Boyle County(3A) Boyle County defeated Floyd Central 49-0. Next up: home vs Lawrence County 3. Scott County(6A) Scott County defeated Campbell County 36-13. Next up: at Frederick Douglass 4. Anderson County(5A) Anderson County had a first round BYE and will host Highlands this Friday. 5. Lexington Catholic(3A) Lexington Catholic defeated Pike County Central 58-18. Next up: at Belfry 6. Taylor County(4A) Taylor County defeated Western 57-14. Next up: home vs John Hardin 7. Montgomery County(5A) Montgomery County defeated Dixie Heights 35-28. Next up: at Covington Catholic. 8. Franklin County(4A) Franklin County defeated Russell County 42-14. Next up: home vs Wayne County 9. Madison Central(6A) Madison Central defeated Seneca 50-0. Next up: home vs Tates Creek. 10. Lexington Christian(2A) Lexington Christian defeated Prestonburg 46-14. Next up: at Shelby Valley Playoffs Games of Note: Scott County at Frederick Douglass(6A) The rematch is here! A common theme in the second round of the playoffs is rematches and this rematch is one of the more anticipated rematches in the state. Frederick Douglass defeated Scott County 28-10 in the first meeting as Frederick Douglass announced to the state that they are for real this season. Boasting one of the strongest defenses in the state as well as one of the more potent offenses this Frederick Douglass team faces their biggest challenge to date in a Scott County team looking to advance to the 6A Championship Game. The winner of this game will be in excellent shape to make it Kroger Field and I fully expect this game to better than the first matchup. Damarco Fishback of Frederick Douglass appeared to be unstoppable in the first matchup so I expect him to be an impactful player this time around again. Austin Barnett has a good game for Scott County the first matchup but as a team Scott County had a difficult time putting the ball in the end zone despite moving the ball well throughout the game. I expect Frederick Douglass to win the rematch but make no bones about it, Scott County is good enough to win this game and roll on to Kroger Field and play for the state title. Highlands at Anderson County(5A) Anderson County comes into this game undefeated and will face their biggest challenge of the season as Fort Thomas Highlands is coming to Lawrenceburg for this second round matchup. Highlands is as close to being back as a state power as they have been these past few years and they are hungry to prove that they are back. Charles Collins of Anderson County has had an outstanding year and he will be counted on to carry the load this Friday night as Anderson County has high hopes to show that their season isn’t a fluke or a product of a soft schedule. Two teams with something to prove makes for an intense atmosphere and in this time of the year anything is possible. As mentioned this will be Anderson County’s toughest game of the year and while I won’t say that they don’t have a chance against Highlands I do feel like Highlands will emerge victorious from this game. Lexington Catholic at Belfry(3A) Lexington Catholic travels to Belfry this Friday night for their second round matchup. Beau Allen and his outstanding receiver corps looks to pull off a victory in what will be an outstanding playoff environment. The concerning part for Lexington Catholic will be their difficulties in stopping the run and it is no secret that Belfry will be running the ball almost exclusively with bad intentions. It will be interesting to see if Lexington Catholic can put up the points they are accustomed to putting up on Belfry. If they can get their offense going then they should have a chance to pull off the victory. If they find themselves unable to score they could find themselves in a bad way as Belfry could use ball control offense to keep Beau Allen off of the field. This game appears to play right into Belfry’s hands but again, if Lexington Catholic can get their offense going then this will be a heck of a ball game. Lexington Christian at Shelby Valley(2A) Lexington Christian makes the trip to Shelby Valley in a game that has the makings to be one of the best games of the state. Shelby Valley has yet to score less than 42 points against any KY opponent and Lexington Christian has shown that despite a lot of new faces on the gridiron this year they are still a respectable program. Shelby Valley can raise some eyebrows here if they can defend their home turf as they aren’t one of the schools mentioned statewide in the strong 2A classification. A victory over Lexington Christian would put the classification on notice. Lexington Christian is looking for this victory to get a rematch with either Somerset or Danville depending on the winner of that rematch. Lexington Christian has averaged 45 points in their last two games and I would not be surprised at all if this game is in the thirties. This one should be a fun one. Danville at Somerset(2A) This is another rematch on the table that will garner plenty of attention as well. Somerset won the first matchup 21-10 and the Briar Jumpers have had a very successful season as they are district champs this season. This game could be different this time around as Danville is much healthier for the rematch and despite a recent loss to Lexington Christian they do seem to be playing better. This game being at Somerset is a terrific spot for Somerset to be in as I imagine this game will be a much better game than the first matchup and truthfully that was a pretty good game considering the circumstances. I still feel like Somerset wins this game but it won’t be easy at all. Tates Creek at Madison Central(6A) Continuing the theme of rematches this week Tates Creek will make the quick trip to Richmond to face Madison Central. Madison Central won the first game 33-18. The first matchup was a two touchdown deficit for Tates Creek but I can see this game going either way and the winner will have a fair shot at making the state semifinals in the 6A classification playoffs. Henry Clay at Simon Kenton(6A) Henry Clay travels north to Simon Kenton for their second round matchup. In what will likely be an uphill battle for them Henry Clay continues the fight to keep their season alive. Montgomery County at Covington Catholic(5A) Montgomery County also travels north to take on arguably the best team in the state. Covington Catholic’s incredible defense will look to disable Montgomery County stud, Pharoah Davis as Montgomery County hopes to shock the entire state with an upset. Lincoln County at Pulaski County(5A) Lincoln County travels to Pulaski County looking to avenge a 27-21 defeat from earlier this season. If Lincoln County can avoid the mistakes they made in the first matchup then they have a chance to advance to the next round of the playoffs. Wayne County at Franklin County(4A) Franklin County will host Wayne County in their second round matchup. While not a rematch they do have a total of four common opponents this season: Boyle County, Knox Central, North Oldham and Russell County. Boyle County defeated Franklin County 50-7 and Wayne County 48-7. Franklin County defeated Knox Central 42-20. Wayne County lost to Knox Central 31-20. Franklin County defeated North Oldham 47-14. Wayne County defeated North Oldham 52-6. Franklin County defeated Russell County 42-14. Wayne County defeated Russell County 50-13. I guess we’ll see what happens. John Hardin at Taylor County(4A) Taylor County looks to continue with their winning ways as they host John Hardin this week. Mercer County at Moore(4A) Uphill battle for Mercer County this week as they travel to Louisville to face Moore in second round action. Moore has pretty much had their way with every opponent this year with the exception of Johnson Central, the #1 ranked team in 4A. The Titans are young and a good showing can only help the program going forward. Harrison County at Ashland(4A) Harrison County travels to Ashland to take on one of the top teams in the 4A classification. Another uphill battle for a local 4A school. Lawrence County at Boyle County(3A) Lawrence County defeated Western Hills 78-74 last weekend and their reward for their victory is a trip to Title Town to take on the defending 3A state champions, the Boyle County Rebels. The Rebels will continue rolling along and will be watching for the winner of the Lexington Catholic/Belfry game. If Lexington Catholic wins the Rebels will get another home game. If the Belfry wins then it will be time for the Rebels to hit the road as they try to run the gauntlet. Raceland at Paris(1A) Paris will host Raceland this Friday night and while I have been applauding Paris on their season I think this matchup will be too much for them. Raceland is one of the best teams in 1A and that will most likely show up on the field this Friday night. Ludlow at Frankfort (1A) Frankfort will host Ludlow in what should be an easy win for Frankfort as they prepare physically and mentally for their next round matchup against Beechwood.
