  1. "Shelbi Benzinger saved the game for the Scott, making a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime, and the Eagles went on to a 65-63 victory over Holmes Friday night.

Benzinger finished the game with 18 points.

In a back-and-forth game, Scott thrived down low with freshman center Lauren Tibbs, who led all scorers with 21 points and recorded 15 rebounds, marking her 13th double-double this season.

Holmes (15-9), ranked No. 6 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, was led by senior guard Christina Weaver, who scored 19 points.

Scott had lost eight of its previous nine games."

Nice win by the Scott High Lady Eagles

  2. The head coach turns to the assistant and asked the question: Any Suggestions on what to do? This question I have heard numerous times over the past games I have been to. How do you win a basketball game? I will start this by saying I have never coached girls basketball but have coached another girls sport.

Here is just one scenario: The game has just begun, your team is down 14-11 in the 1st quarter, your guard has 6 of the 11 points, hot from the 3pt line. She is pulled and sat on the bench. Another starter makes a bad pass, she is pulled and put on the bench, so now lets say 3 of your 5 starters are now sitting, not really in any type of foul trouble and suddenly by the end of the the 2nd quarter your team is now down 25-11. The flow of your players is not there, they do not play well together, it is a group of 5 playing individually and at half time you are out of the game.

Can someone explain to me, why you wouldn’t leave your starters in and play through when the game is still within reach? Why pull a player who is on a hot streak from the 3pt line? Why let the substitutions continue? It would be different if the depth of your bench was strong. You have a starting five for a reason? Is it that your starters are 3 seniors and 2 juniors and you feel the need to build your younger players?

I will say that this pattern of “subs” happens whether the team is winning or losing. Leads of 10-20 have been blown with this type of coaching and the coach seems to be at a loss of what to do to make this work. It is my turn to ask “Any suggestions?” I would not ask if this was a one time thing, but this has been the pattern all season long.

Boy, I sure wish I had some suggestions for you. But, I have seen it happen recently with the team that I cheer for, on more than one occassion. It is very frustrating to watch on the sidelines as a fan. You really want to support the team and the coach, and then when you see almost all of the starters being pulled, so that the JV team can be put in, you have to shake your head and wonder what the heck is going on.

  3. Grant's woes continue with the problems adjusting to changes in the line-up (the loss of starting PG Gorby with an ACL injury & illness recovery in 2 other starters, Hopperton & Morgan).

Grant was sluggish, did not rebound or box out well & played with their frustration apparent. Fouls were in abundance. Not a good night.

Nice job Scott. Tibbs & Benzinger looked good!

24's mom, Grant will bounce back. I definitely agree that they miss Gorby out there. I am sure she misses being out there as well. Definitely a nice win for the Lady Eagles after 4 straight losses, two of which should have been wins.

  4. "If the freshman has earned the starting role, start the freshman. As a coach you have to play your best players. This is part of life's leasons". I agree 100 percent with the above statement. You have to play your best players no matter if they are 9th graders or a senior. Just because you are a senior, does not entitle you more playing time than a freshman. I see this all of the time right now for the team that I support.

  5. Campbell County 69, Scott 55

    Scott (7-9) - Muth 1 0 2, Benzinger 7 5 24, Houseman 0 2 2, Kraft 1 1 3, Brown 2 1 5, Tibbs 7 5 19. Totals: 18 14 55.

    Campbell County (9-6) - White 1 4 7, Marino 1 4 6, Baker 2 3 9, Hertzenberg 6 0 12, Bowling 4 1 10, Kitchen 6 11 25. Totals: 20 23 69.

Scott was winning by 9 starting the third quarter. Another tough loss for the Lady Eagles.

  6. Eradi states in the article that the experience of representing and competing with your school is an experience that can never be duplicated. He is 100% correct. As a parent I have supported, financed, and coached all my kids in the hopes that they will be able to compete on the high school level. At least at the school where my kids will attend they will have that opportunity, I hope the girls at Beechwood will too.

I could not agree with you more. The girls at Beechwood deserve the opportunity to play soccer.

  7. The only circumstance when a kid should be allowed to quit his team is if he or she feels like they are being abused in some way and all measures trying to correct that have been attempted. Sadly though the biggest reason today for quitting is playing time. This should never be a reason for quitting because that is life. You need to teach the kid to show up every day and work their butt off and hopefully justice will prevail and they will get an opportunity. If they do get the opportunity and take advantage of it and get more playing time, then it is all that much more satisfying.

I could not agree with that statement more. I do believe that some kids think that just because they are on the team, they should play no matter what.

  8. The key words are they played well as a team. Until the Eagles learn that winning takes a team effort, not individual's effort, they will continue to struggle. The Eagles have a lot of talent and keep getting beat by teams that just work together with in most cases lesser talent.

I couldn't agree with you more on that statement. I really thought and I hope that this will be their year. The talent is definitely there.
