  1. I agree, I don't agree with that group, but it is the same as the black panther party being allowed to do voter intimidation and call for white babies to be killed.

My papaw was on the beaches of Normandy and fought those Nazis also.

If you are going to continually bring up your racists views whenever you get the chance, please at least get the facts correct. The incident you keep referring to in PA, I assume, was perpetrated by the "NEW Black Panther Party", completely unaffiliated with the Black Panthers.

  2. I don't know, ace. Most of what you say is true, but I've seen the good and bad of school administrators. I know of one that would have gotten to the bottom of this situation, as he was a hands on, investigative, talk-to-the-studets type of principal, as opposed to simply sitting in an office fielding phone calls from parents and saying there is no proof. In the case of what it being said here, if the school didn't do more than what is mentioned, they did not do enough.

My point wasn't about getting to the bottom of it . . . that is the easy part. The question is the recourse. What could the school (principal) have done to change the behavior? Suspended the kid for 3-5 days is the worst they can do and this is not a behavior changing tactic.

  3. And without it Americans wouldn't be able to provide their own savings for retirement?

You ever hear of the Great Depression? Folks is my family were/are ministers who do not pay into social security, they were very smart with their investments AND got less risky/more conservative as they got older and still have not recovered from what the market did to their savings and are having to work WELL into their 70s. Had they been truck drivers or construction workers who were not able to continue the physical labor work they have been doing they would be screwed right now and either out of money or at least running out of it by this point. It has nothing to do with how smart they were is had to do with GLOBAL ECONOMIC markets over which they had no control.

  4. Jim, you talk about the American Dream becoming a myth and act as if you're sad because its no longer reachable, yet once someone makes the American dream happen, you want to tax them half their wealth and then say they didn't earn it.

Who again are we talking about that made the dream happen?? MR or GWB? Neither one of them rose up the socio-economic ladder to live differently than their parents. Is the American dream now simply being born wealthy and finding a way to stay there?

  5. How in the hell did you put up with this for so long???? After awhile I think I would have found myself in trouble for taking care of things my own way if the proper authorities couldn't. I find it sad that the school did absolutely NOTHING to help your child.

Not to sound too defensive here, but what exactly should the school do? About the only recourse is to send the student home for a few days. FWIW, that rarely, if ever changes any behavior. And, I discipline students all of the time and then have parents call me and say, "why didn't you do anything to that OTHER student" not knowing that I did and me not being able to tell them because of FERPA. Most schools have moved away from having students grade each others' papers for these same FERPA rules so that is the only real issue I see here with the school. The only real recourse is to file charges for harassment, call kids into court and have them testify. Schools are not courts of law and our severest punishments are viewed by some as vacations. Other educators correct me if I am wrong. Lots of counseling and talking can take place but it is not always effective. Sometimes kids simply ACT LIKE they shouldn't and then there is not much that can be done.

Also, schools cannot file charges "for" someone.

  6. My best advice is move. I've said basically the other thing in another thread, but I will reiterate it here.

The coal industry always comes and goes in spurts. My family used to live probably somewhere close to where you are now, and decided that it would be best to get out of that region for lack of opportunity. Drive around Pikeville, Prestonsburg, and Paintsville and tell me how many abandoned bulldozers you see sitting in empty fields on the side of the road, or land that has been stripped and deserted overnight. I understand the coal industry is a big employer in EKY, and until something comes in to replace it I'll stand by the industry. But with that being said I would like to see the area better taken care of referring both to landscape and the people. The only public college in the entire area is Morehead State. No idea why Pikeville College is a private school, none. You are in the poorest region of the state, and have a private institute plopped down right in the middle of it. Makes zero sense. For EKY to grow they need better education, and I think that would shift if both Cumberlands and Pikeville College would be become public institutes. I feel like the area needs more manufacturing jobs as well. If these kids are not going to continue their education after high school then provide good jobs for them that require nothing more than a GED.

You can't have more mfg. jobs without better infrastructure and infrastructure is government money and republicans don't believe in spending gov't money so no more infrastructure and no mfg. jobs

  7. Without being an economically minded person all I really state is what I do know, in the past 4 years I have not once had my salary increase in my school district. Other than the moving up the "years" scale it has stayed put, which is actually a decrease when prices have gone up. In the past we would get a 1% increase most of the time, that has gone out the window. My wife and I are, without a doubt (she is a teacher also), in worse financial shape today then we were 4-5 years ago. Fact. Don't get me wrong, we aren't in any trouble, we have never been in credit card debt (thank God) but we don't have a lot of cushion either. Our staff has been cut, our class sizes are up and all we hear about (at least in our district) is cuts, cuts, cuts.

I state this because when people say we are in better shape I have to shake my head in disbelief.

Public service (teaching, firefighting, police work) doesn't count. Government is too big.

  8. And he's exactly right.

More people were actually looking for jobs, and somewhere I saw that the actual real new jobs was over 800k. Again, I don't want to learn how that is all figured out but the simple fact is, whatever numbers you have used as long as they are consistent over time we have less unemployment now than we did at this time last year.

  9. Of course more jobs have been added. It is almost time for the Christmas holiday and stores always add more jobs and after the holidays, then they lay off all the extra workers hired and we are again back to high unemployment.

Whatever, was it at 7.8 last October? Don't think so, which means we are adding jobs. Also numbers show that we underestimated jobs created over the summer and had to UP those numbers. I don't understand "internals" either, but, however you look at it, we are climbing out of the G.O.P.othole.

Imagine had cities and states not layed off all of the those Police Officers and Firefighters and yes even the teachers. Imagine if Congress had passed the American Jobs Act.

  10. I have never had to wait either, which makes early voting (other than absentee) even more ridiculous. Early voting just makes no sense.

So because it never happened to you in this highly populated area, long polling/voting never happen anywhere?

Have you seen the Florida voting cards. 8 pages long with lots to read. Is Florida more heavily populated than Kentucky? Is it possible that there may be hours of long lines in Florida? Yes. Do we want everyone to vote? Yes. Then what is wrong with voting early?

If I remember correctly, they turned several people away in 2000 in Florida who were in line when the polling station was still open.

My mantra - "Vote early and often".

  11. No. They use their own money, repeat, their own money and then receive a tax write off.

Liberals use double speak like this to try to fool those who do not pay close attention to detail.

Only PC talk sees someone who uses their own money and receive a tax break as being given government money.

I guess that is how Obama sees it, all money belongs to the government, not to the person who earned it.

Actually I am a liberal who is a big supporter of tax incentives, if there is some in lieu of payments to continue to help fund schools and fire and police protection. Incentives are monies that the state/federal govt may not had anyway.

  12. I am not sure what Romney said that was incorrect. Obama is for bigger government, I don't think anyone can deny that. Romney is for smaller government. If people are dependent on government, they are going to tend to vote for someone who wants bigger government. What is wrong with that logic. If Romney stepped in anything, it may be the truth.

The problem is that welfare, in MOST cases, is a stop gap measure, used for help. People who depend on it live crappy lives and don't want to live on it. Why would they vote for someone who most on here say wants them to stay. They would vote for folks who would change the system.

The other problem is that the 47% are primarily the elderly and children..

  13. If you understand the reason for the filibusters you can see who the obstructionists are.

The Senate leadership (Democratic) refused to allow for amendments to bills. Had this new rule not happened the filibusters would not have happened. Well covered - during the Daily Show by Rubio .

Its like Batman and the Joker - you made me...you made me first.

They were the majority party elected by the people . . . they can set the rules - no amendments, what legitimate amendments would be proposed? The Republican blocked the will of the people and said that was what they were going to do. Ultimately Mitch McConnell is going to fail in his one stated goal - the keep President Obama to one term. He will coast to his second.
