  1. One of the more successful N Ky teams over the past few years has been Scott HS and they do play a pressing trapping style of ball with a very aggressive half court man. I think Carr does a great job teaching this system and like LexCath it is part of the "program". Coach Carr's teams can be very disruptive on defense and force teams to play at a tempo that they are not comfortable with.

I agree, very few if any other high schools in this area play that style of ball.

  2. Here is a nice article on the game by Mike Fields: http://www.kentucky.com/2011/03/17/1673688/sweet-sixteen-seniors-carry-lexington.html#. At the end of the article, Dixie's coach mentions that no one in N. Ky runs the types of press/traps that LexCath does. Seems what LexCath does has been pretty successful. Can someone more knowledgable about the game explain to me why no one in N. Ky does what LexCath does? Does it take a special type of players to do it and no team in N. Ky has that type of players on it?

That's just NKY basketball and the way it always has been. They usually walk the ball up the court and run a half court set. Play man to man and very seldom press. Very unimaginative basketball. That's why when teams from NKY go to Louisville or Central KY, they usually get beat. They need to change with the times, if they don't, they will continue to get beat when they leave the "safe place" they call NKY. Holmes has been the only exception recently because they had the athletes with well above average basketball skills.

Just look at some of the final scores in the past and recent regional tournaments, scoring in the 20"s, 30's & 40's. You don't see scores that low anywhere else in the state.

Playing the trapping defenses and press defenses and being effective ususally takes years of practice and the lower level (ie middle school) teams run the same system as the high school. From what I've seen NKY, very few high school coaches are involved with pre high school programs.

  3. Maybe this will help you to relate WHAT I'm saying.

Pitt just got beat tonight by U Conn. Pitt is currently #3 in the nation. They didn't win their conference tournament. Yet they go to the NCAA Tournament and will be a #1 or 2 seed. The Big East will end up having 5-7 teams in the NCAA Tournament.

Morehead won the OVC; they will be the only OVC team in the NCAA Tournament.

I know the Sweet Sixteen is high school basketball. I would just like to see the best teams in the state playing for the state championship trophy. JMO

  4. When did they not get to participate for a state championship? The entire postseason is working toward a state championship. They had to finish in the top two in the district and then win the region. How many more chances should they get?

Only one can come out of a region. How many top 20 teams are in the 7th and 11th? I'll answer that.....At least 10, and actually there are 8 in the top 11! No matter how good or bad these teams play only 2 go to the Sweet Sixteen. I just think if you are going to have a state championship tournament, you should have the best teams in the state playing in it.

With the current format, 7 of the top 11 teams in the state ARE NOT playing in the Sweet Sixteen!

    also...

With the current format, only 6 of the top 20 teams in the state ARE playing in the Sweet Sixteen!

  6. The NCAA tournament does not have the best 68 teams playing in it so how is that different than the Sweet 16?

Less than half the teams in the NCAA tournament got their bid by winning their conference tournament. The rest get there based on their season performance. I would guarantee that every top twenty team that does not win their conference tournament will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Example....If KY does not win the SEC Tournament, they will still be playing in the NCAA Tournament in a couple weeks.

There are at least 6 of the top 10 teams in the state not playing in the Sweet 16 but a team with a losing record and probably wasn't ranked in the top 75 teams in the state is playing. Once again, not knocking Shelby Valley, they won their region and they won the right to be there. I just don't like the current format.

I don't have a problem with the regional winners being there, I have a problem with the six top ten teams in the state not participating for the state championship.

  7. The Sweet 16 never claims to have the best 16 teams. Only the best teams from "16 regions". Every region gets to offer their champion to the Sweet 16 to contend for the title. And - over the course of a long basketball season - sometimes the best team in a region takes a lot of early losses...particularly if they have early injuries. It's all about how you end your season...and sometimes, the best team in the region at the end of the year was pretty pedestrian early in the year...

Nothing against Shelby Valley, but are they the best team in the 15th Region? Like I just said, I have absolutely nothing against Shelby Valley, I just dislike the current Sweet Sixteen format.

  8. Unbelieveable! SV didn't even win their district!

The bottom half of the bracket is so weak, this team could have made it to the final four or maybe even the finals if they were in the bottom bracket!!!!!!

The Sweet Sixteen definitely doesn't reflect the top teams in the state. A team with a 13-17 record that has lost several games to teams with losing records, pulls out three upsets in an extremely weak region and goes to Rupp. Then you have teams like Ballard, Tates Creek, J-Town, Scott Co, Western, Bowling Green, Henry Clay, etc. sitting in the stands watching the state tournament.

I like seeing the sixteen regional winners at Rupp but I think they should add at least another 8 at-large teams (determined by a committee) that play play-in games against the 8 lowest seeded regional winners.

I think a format similar to this would pretty much guarantee most all of the top teams in the state would be in the tournament.

Last year you had Ballard, Scott Co., Shelby Co., Warren Central, Christian Co. all in the top bracket beating each other up to get to the finals, then you had Shelby Valley that had a cake walk to the finals and ended up beating Ballard in the finals. The same thing will probably happen again this year.:irked:

  9. Watching the video, I can definitely see how the angle the ref had was huge in that call. The way Downs moved as he shot and then went to the ground could easily cause a ref to think his body was hit as he went up. Also, there is no way anyone can say that Cooper wins if the foul isn't called. Boone had two big men in position for the rebound so who knows what happens if the whistle isn't blown. I could easily see McQueary getting a stick back with no whistle.

The ref that made the call was just outside the elbow of the three point line "point blank" in front of the play. He was right on top of it. He just flat out blew the call! From his angle, he could see Downs run right into McQueary. Refs should not call what they think they saw. They should make the call based on what they actually see. Better call the Sheriff, Cooper was robbed!

  10. So the missed call with 10 sec left when Downs ran into his own teammate (McQueary) while throwing up a prayer, and they called a 5th foul on Langley instead, didn't take the game from Cooper?? Even Richard Skinner alluded to it in this article http://communitypress.cincinnati.com/article/AB/20110223/SPT0302/102240367/1005/RSS03/Downs-finds-redemption-?odyssey=nav%7Chead

Cooper outplayed them and they got bailed out...Even people who have no affiliation w/ Cooper are upset w/ this particular play b/c it took the game away from a hungrier team that played harder.

And on top of that, the calls in the 2nd half of ball were one sided. It was obvious, as others have stated, the officials didn't expect Cooper to beat Boone and called the game as such (esp 2nd half).

You are correct about the ????foul????

Here is the questionable foul posted on Boone Co HS Basketball website.

    http://www.crickmervirtualcoach.com/BooneCounty/home.html

Pause it when the ball is being shot, it is obvious Downs runs into McCreary and nobody even touches Downs.

  11. Yes, The did lose this game. However there are other thngs that contributed to this loss. For one, Maschinot did not start and only played a few minutes. He was sick. Brett did not play much either. He has a sore ankle. Baker got in quick foul trouble, and he too played little minites. I do not know what Jake's minute total was, but he too did not play as many as normal. Connelly's minutes I think were down as well. Coach used the game to get others important playing time in a meaningless game. I woulda done the same thing. They did not play with the same passion and purpose they have been playing with. It was obvious to me even in warm-ups, they just wanted to get this game over with.

Not taking anything awa from Madison Central. They do have a good team. Thier student section was the most 'annoying' student section I think that Cov Cath has played in front of this year. There were no Crazies there, and the gym was relativel quiet. They were taunting the Colonels pretty good. Good experience for them. The other good experience that the Colonels got from this game was the officiating. Wow. I know many complain on here about the 9th region guys we have, but man, these guys from the 11th called a much different game. The crowd was getting on them pretty dang good. The colonels will learn from that as well.

I also think that as long as the Colonels are healthy, they will come out fired up against Holy Cross on Tuesday.

I believe your quote wins "the most excuses for a loss" that I've ever seen!

  12. Should be a good game.

It'll be interesting to see how the Boone guards defend Hatton, Hassel, and Trammel. Downs and Stanley must be aggressive offensively if they want to win this game.

The battle between Brown and Pike down low is going to be a lot of fun to watch. I could see Crabtree getting in some foul trouble trying to step out on the perimeter and defend Stanley. Don't be surprised to see Boone mix in some 2-3 zone. I'm going with the Red Colonels:

    Dixie: 67

    Boone: 60

    Good Prediction!

  13. I think all you guys are probably right. Northern Kentucky and EKU have both come to see him play and NKU is pretty high on him, I know NKU is D-III, but they are a very good program. I know what it takes to play at the D-I level, and I do think that the team he plays on affects his ability to be seen. He will play college ball but I hope the team he plays on now does not hurt him...I think it does. Everyone in here brings up great points and I agree with them, but if Southern was having the year they had last year Ponder would be playing at a small D-I school.

Ponder not playing D-1 basketball has nothing to do with Southern's performance this year. If he is good enough, they will find him or at least keep recruiting him.
