I saw that game (which, BTW, was 1982). Southern had a big wide receiver, Curtis Jeffries-his son, Justin Jeffries, recently played on the line at X) and a very good two time all state running back, Jimmy Maddox. Good game, two good teams.
Yes,82 season class of 83 is what was on my mind. Sorry
-
You are correct about Mike. He was fairly thin at the beginning of his sophomore year, but stood about 6'7". He played on special teams. I remember his first varsity game when he lined up for the opening kick, everyone said wow, who's that tall kid. He towered above everyone else. Well, he continued to grow and gain weight and he did start later that year and went on to great things at Trinity and UK.
I was on that team, Mike and I were in the same class. Our starters at the T spots were Kenny McMillen(sp) and Don Krouth(sp) Mike was in the rotation later in the year but not a starter.
-
Didn't Andy Murray, Carwell Gardner, Mike Pfeiffer, and Donnie Gardner all start as sophmores and go on to be all state? Anybody old enough to remember the mid 80's?
No theyu did not all start as Sophs Only Andy M which was only the first game at LB. Hurt his leg and played in the rotation the rest of the year. Moved to running back as a junior because we had Scott T and Todd Coke back at LB from the prior year. All started as Juniors. Carwell was a DG on the 84 title team and moved the LB with Andy M as Seniors. Mike P played alot as a soph but did not start. The 83 team was loaded with a great senior class we should have won state just fell short in the semi's to a very good Southern team.

Real quick to clarify...we were 0-1 having lost to MBA, and it was 2003...
Yes you are correct and as for the 04 I was trying to rewrite history so that season ended in a title:banana:

To all Trinity supporters..........please keep the hype in perspective or else you might find yourself 1-1 or 0-2 going into the Cincy X game.
Yes we were 0-2 going into the 04 game and almost won so I don't think we have lost our perspective. Besides this is what pre-season hype is all about. We all know very well the game is won on the field not in the chat rooms. X has 2 very tuff opening games before us and may not even be #1.
-
Being the underdog is fine with us. Hopefully, Cincy X will write us off. Elder did just that not too long ago and most of their fans were gone at halftime. I am not predicting that will happen this year, but I will never believe that we don't have a chance to win against ANYONE.
:thumb:
X will not write us off as they got a good taste of what we are all about in 04 only winning on the last drive of the game 24-17. We could have won that game by three field goals had we not gone for the TD everytime we were in the red zone.
-
Trinity will be fine against Cinn. X. It should be a long and difficult day for the Rocks, but ditto for Cinn. X. Reading the BGP 6A pre-season analysis and some of the knowledgeable Rock posters on this board leads to the conclusion that T is loaded and deep. So is Cinn. X. Regarding the game, can anyone inform us of areas of strength they expect one team to excel in? For example, is one team appreciably faster? Better coached? Stronger O-line? etc. Finally, would anyone venture a final score?
BTW, kudos to the Rocks for scheduling Cinn. X.
ram2003, I saw that 1959 Manual team play. They prevailed in a tight game against Flaget.
Pro-style sets from X with equal run pass relation. O-line has good size every year. Backs are very fast. Defense in the secondary most years is a plus for X seem to have one or two playing College ball every year. Lbs This year are very good Fred Craig is the real deal. For the rocks to win this game I think our D will have to be the difference, I do not see the Rock O scoring 30 plus points on X. I see this game much like 04 with the winner being decided in the later stages of the 4th Quarter. Rocks win 21-17.

This would make a great book. Take all the top programs in the state and write about the teams history with coach and player interviews asking the same questions of all teams. i think we would see the recurring theme over and over. Just a thought.

Everybody talks about the two LB's for Trinity, but the other two OLB hit just as hard, one was even a first team all district last year....
I agree Villa, Deeds will bring it on every play. Has he put on any size this year?
-
One of the impressive aspects of the article is that Cincinnati has one team ranked first pre-season and another between 15-20. Does Kentucky have any team in the top 25?
Biotech, Trinity will have a good Bowling Green under their belt as prep for the big game.
This is true BG will be a good test to start the season, always well coached and an outstanding KY program.
-
My main concern is that St. X will have played two very good programs prior to us playing them.
-
Has Wes completely recovered from his injuries? I'm assuming he played in the scrimmage yesterday.
He has looked very good so far, more size and it appears has the same mobility.
-
This is a little off thread since the 3-peat relates to Kentucky, but is Cincy St. X, Trinity's third game opponent, ranked in the top 5 in the USA (for whatever that's worth) at this time?
Yes they are the third game which is why I made my earlier post. this could be a special team, the stage is set like 02.
-
Get your first look at the new stadium when St.X scrimmages Fern Creek August 9th 6:00pm.
Good first srimmage for both teams this one I want to see.
-
Not much else you can say about this thread. 8/31 will be the day the real talk begins, on the field and that's where it should be.......
I agree the first and the third games will tell a lot about this team early on.

The base scheme is shotgun, 4 wide. We also run primarily out of the I formation. Coach Holcomb isn't as deadset in his offense as some coaches, he will throw more or run more depending on the talents of the team. My senior season we had 4,500 yards passing and probably 2,000 + rushing. However, in 95 and 96 when Breathitt won state titles, they were a very well balanced team.
How many times did you see the 3-5-3 D scheme thrown at you to shut down the passing attack or was it more 4-3 base. I ask because everytime I see teams try to shut down the spread it opens up huge running lanes in the middle. With a good back that hits the hole fast major 5-8 yards damage can be done quickly placing the D back on its heals and openning up the passing lanes once again.
-
I'd say Breathitt Co. has been one of the best offenses in the state for the last 10-12 years, although some years were better than others.
What is the base scheme?

What does the QB race look like?

We did have a good run at it in the 90's, but a dang cotter pin broke allowing the perpetual motion to slip back into a pendulum motion. We've identified the problem and instituted corrective action. It's a bright new day!
Yes you Did have a great run in the 90's a good chunck of those boys came out of St MM who got great coaching from former T players. See Ox we even try to help you guys out once in a while just to keep things eventful.

You are right about Coach Harmon seeming to have Henry Clay's number for the past couple of years. However, the Generals seem to have a phoebia when it comes to the Playoffs, where they are one-and-done for the past couple years against teams that they should have beaten (Woodford County and South Laurel).
I believe that the real reason Henry Clay is once again ranked higher in Preseason is that, if you layout and analyze both the returning and upcoming talent for both teams, Henry Clay is just more impressive than Lafayette on paper.
Henry Clay gets beat by Lafayette because of bad pass defense plan and simple.

Once again you are correct...the pedulum is starting to swing again...tick-tock, tick-tock. It's the dawn of a new Tiger Age!
By the way, once the pedulum has definitively moved to it's correct Tiger orientation, our engineering staff will convert the clock to a perpetual motion machine.
Ox you better hire some T engineers to show you how to do that yours have been trying for years and can't figure it out.

Defense looks solid and big up front and in the middle. I'm not sure who is back as dbs. Little Bobby will be missed. O-line has some good returning talent but replacing the center will be hard (wink-wink). If the qb can throw it there are several targets to catch it. Not sure who the rbs will be behind Tim..but he looks pretty good. Will must stay healthy. Place kicking will be good, punting probably not as good as last year, but that is understandable. You wouldn't think it, but (for Trinity) the defense actually gave up a lot of points last year. I think that will improve. On the other hand the offense has averaged 40+ pts per game. I don't think we will see that this year with the schedule at hand.
I like the sound of this defense. Last time we had questions about a young but fast D was 02 and we know how good that D turned out to be. Gooooooooooo Rockssssssssssssss.

I watched Ballard play many teams that season. Where 4A is concerned they were the 3rd best.
That was a Southern team that should have made the playoffs, they were no slouch.
The Seneca team that they lost to was also the Seneca team the beat Trinity that season. We know what happened when Trinity played X both times that season.
As to the Paducah Tillman team they lost to, that team was lead by Hunter Cantwell and Joe Casey(a spectacular RB who couldn't get his life together to make it into college).
Given that information, I stand by what I said.
PT was also undefeated and lost in the 3A semifinal to BC 35-21.

Not to beat this horse any more than it already has been, but I can't say I am too fond of the notion that the passing attack only has to be "effective enough" vs. being a vital part of the offense. I can't say what the percentage was last season of running to passing plays, but I would guess it would be at least 70/30%. So, logically, opposing teams are going to spend their preparation time in a similar fashion. Give 'em some more to prepare for, and spread out the defense to cover more field. Let's find a way to use more tools in the tool box!
OK, now I'm getting off my soap box, before I start the rant about squib-kicking in the regular season game with Cov Cath...........
I would like to see H use the spread formations and attack with the running game. Defenses have to respect the formation or pay the price. This also opens up the line and gives good backs the opportunity to make big plays.
