  1. Greetings from The Ghost! After reading several posts, I thought this would be a GREAT time for me to post a request/plea/onmykneesbegging type thread.

As those of you who have seen my posts before, I used to officiate. I have posted before about the need for more three person officiating in Kentucky and with some of the things I have read, now seemed the best time to bring out a few points:

This first one is for coaches: as you see now, three person is not going away. Time to start using it all season in all games. Then you will see that the things that are called in the tournament, become easier to see if you have 15-20 other games to make corrections on what kind of fouls will be called. Now, many of you might think that more fouls are called; this is not the case. They are just different kinds of calls and do remember, in the region especially, you have the cream of the crop in the area. Many of these people working have worked college level games and know what to look for. There have been numerous studies on how many fouls were called in a two person Vs a three person game, and over the course of a season full of games, it was about one more foul per game with three.

Second is for fans; believe it or not we love you (most of the time, hey you pay us)! I really never had much of an issue with fans during my career. Most of you don't really know what we are looking for or where we are looking anyway. You are watching the action of the ballhandler, cause that is what you are suppoed to do. You didn't pay upwards of 10 bucks to watch the defense did you? So when we make a call that dosen't seem right to you take heart. We probably got it right, especially in the region tournament.

Block/charges are the hardest to call (well not really, but I am practicing appeasment here) and are the most controversial. If the referee is good enough to be in the region, he/she is probably going to get this call right 99.9% of the time. We as officials are trained (well if they are trained PROPERLY that is) to watch the defense and think like the offense. I mean really, we know the point of the offensive team right? They have to score! The defensive people are the ones that we have to keep an eye on, due to the fact that they are not as predictable (sometimes). So, when you see a block/charge situation in the region this week, please think about this.

If the contact happens in the chest area, if the referee has done the job they have been trained to do, most likely it will be a offensive foul. Yes the defense CAN move to maintain proper defensive position as long as they get to the spot first. Yes the defense CAN jump in his/her own vertical plane and be off the ground and it still be an offensive foul.

There CAN be an awful lot of contact and there be no whistle. If the defense if playing good defense, there will be MANY situation where there is "significant" contact and nothing is called. I mean there are big men/women in this game and there are smaller ones. If a 5'8" 140 lb guard leaps into a 6'6" 230 lb forward/center and the big guy dosen't move but the little guy goes down, is it better to penelize the little guy?

Just a few thoughts on the matters at hand.

    :flame:

I think the verticality rule may be one of the most missed. At game speed you see someone jump straight up and the offense creates contact, it may appear that the defender is fouling. I like this post because it sheds some light for people that have no idea about officiating.

I have a question for you Ghost. In your personal opinion what do you think about the 3 second call? Do you look for it when your on the baseline, or is it something that is just looked at when someone literally doesn't move out of the paint for a few consecutive possessions?

It seems like over the last four of five years this is being called less and less.

  2. I might give the edge to Montgomery Co. in the 40th district due to their depth at the pitching position. Lindsey Rison, Paige Compton (only a freshman w/ a lot of varsity experience), and KK Oaks are all very capable and due well picking each other up when one of them is having an off night.

  3. I wouldn't think that would be a good fit - with Coach Billy Hicks being the uncle of former Greenup Coach Jim Bob Hicks???

Don't get me wrong - I think Hundley will make someone a GREAT head coach, but I don't see it being at Greenup.

I agree. From the sounds of some of the posts on here over the last few months it sounds like their are some problems surrounding this program. Don't know if it had to do with players, parents, coaches, administration, or a combination. This job seems to me like it needs a seasoned veteran to get it back on track. On the other hand if Hundley turns it around he will look like a genius. Only time will tell.

  4. Not sure how NKU will be able to host both the 9th and 10th region regional tourneys. Article in the Enquirer said they were interested in hosting the 9th region Girls and Boys tourneys. The 10th have every right to be there also with 3 teams in the same county as NKU but it would have to be a pretty tight schedule even if the Boys and Girls go back to the "no NCAA-tourney at Rupp" spacing. Maybe they could alternate years.

This is definately possible. The 6th and 7th regions host their boys and girls tournaments at Louisville Gardens. I wouldn't mind seeing this happen. Could be very exciting for the locals around NKU. Basketball, basketball, basketball all day for about a week wouldn't be too bad.

  5. I was lucky enough in high school to make the regional tournament all 4 years. We never did win it and two of our losses came in the championship game. At no time did I see any actions like this in public. Of course emotions run high and it is kids that are involved but I don't think that any of these are reasons for such actions to be excused.

  6. I am just curious to see how many 10th region fans will be willing and/or able to attend both the boys semi-finals and the girls championship on Saturday? Their are a few teams that could possibly have both their boys and girls playing on Saturday (Mason Co. or Brossart). Just curious to see how each will be effected. If you don't attend both would you have if they weren't on the same day?

  7. OJ Mayo plays in Ohio

Unless their has been a very recent change of address OJ plays for Huntington High School in West Virginia.

Sounds like this was a really good game to watch. I am also suprised to see the difference in free-throws but a guess a few of the 42 came in the closing minute. On the topic of Gray, I believe a kid of any age should be held accountable for their actions. This doesn't just make her look bad but it reflects on the entire program.

  8. Great game tonight. It looked liked Mason Co. let it slowly slip away throughout the third and the beginning of the fourth quarters. It ended up being GRC that let it get away in the last two minutes. I still can't figure out why GRC's coach didn't use the last full timeout he had on their last possession when things began getting very wild and unorganized. I guess hind sight is 20/20. Congrats Royals you definately played hard tonight to get a good win!!!

  9. I dont see Pineville being able to play with Corbin that close I say about a 12 point game..As for Clay "if" they play like they can then I think they can beat CUmberland by close to 10..

    heres my predictions

    1st Round

    Pineville- 54

    Corbin- 66

    Bell Co-71

    RedBird-55

    South- 68

    Knox- 56

    Clay- 61

    Cumberland- 53

    2nd Round

    Bell Co- 66

    Corbin- 56

    South- 67

    Clay- 56

    Final

    Bell Co- 74

    South- 71 in OT

I would love to see this. Eddie Whitaker deserves a trip to Rupp Arena!!:thumb:

  10. It was a very tough draw for a 1st round game. Eighter of these two teams could win the region and make some noise in Rupp and now playing in the 1st round of the region. I think this game will be close but if not, feel free to quote me. But I feel MC could sneak up on the highly touted Mason Co. team.

I think Montgomery Co.'s schedule was far too weak this season to pull this type of upset.

  11. Don't get me wrong Maggie is a very good player but if it was not for her teammates it might be a different scenario. Montgomery Co. is a very good passing team. On any given night their top scorer is a different person. They help each other so much. Very unselfish team. As you know I am a Cardinal fan but if we don't make it then I pull for Montgomery Co.:thumb:

Well stated. This team can be as good as they want to be and no one player on this team will do it by herself. The leading scorer could be any of 4 or 5 people any night, to me this is why they are tough to handle.

  12. Maybe not from top to bottom, but at the top, at least NDA played and beat these Kentucky schools:

    Boone Co

    Montgomery Co

    Lou. Presentation

    Lou. Assumption

    Simon Kenton

    Rockcastle Co

    Lou. Ballard

    Lou. Mercy

    Central Hardin

Not a bad group to beat and they played but lost to:

    Lou. Sacared Heart

    Boone Co

This is a very impressive resume. I think Mercy has not gotten as much attention as they should, believe it or not I think they may be somewhat under the radar for once. I think Montgomery Co. would love a rematch at this point in the season.

  13. Got up this morning and turned on my Computer, went to the Cincinnati Enquirer on-line newspaper thinking I would read a story about the draw for the Ninth Region Girls Tourney. Of course there wasn't a single mention of the draw. Now I am sure that come Monday morning there will be a story, or at least I sue hope so, since the first game is Monday evening, but do you want to bet that along with the girls pairing story, there will be a story about the boys pairing as well, even though there games don't start until Wednesday?

While I like watching the girls play, I love watching the boys play, but it just isn't fair to the girls. This year in the Girls Ninth Region it is a far more competitive event than the boys Region. The teams in the girls Ninth are a combined 152/64 with a 70.3 wining percentage and only one team has a losing record. However on the boys side, the record is 122/104 with a lousy 59.2 winning percentage, and you have three teams in the region with losing records and one of those teams doesn't even have double digits wins in the column and only has a 33.3 wining percentage.

I really thought today in the paper I would at least see the pairings, but unless I see them in my hard copy of the Sunday Paper that is still outside laying in the snow on my driveway thankfully I belong to BGP's where I at least know I can get the news of the girls games.....

Nice post and an honest opinion. Most people would rather watch a guys game in most situations but the way the girls get treated or just totally ignored isn't right.
