  1. And here you have big advantage that privates have over publics.

Child does not want to attend the school district in which they reside.

She can choose to go to Private School A that can offer financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition or Public School B that has open enrollment but CANNOT offer financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition.

    Advantage: privates.

I believe that the most any Catholic school can give in tuition assistance is 50% and the vast majority of students receive nowhere near that amount. Most are in the 25% range. So if tuition is $5000 per year (and it is more than that at most Catholic high schools in KY) that is still at least $2500 to 4000 per year in tutition cost. Even though Public school B cannot offer financial aid, I believe the tuition cost would be the same or less for that student to attend Public school B.

  2. I think everybody has over analyzed the story so much that it has taken on a life of it's own. I can only tell you that Coach Fisk was hired 33 months ago under a principal and an athletic director that are no longer with the school. The new principal has a different mandate and feels the team should head in a different direction. It really is that simple...

I agree but what could the "different direction" be when stuck in the same district as Covcath, Highlands, and Dixie?

You just are not going to beat both CovCath and Highlands in any given year. And Dixie has the edge in an open enrollment situation and you probably aren't going to beat them 95% of the years.

So what coach, other than one maybe only looking for moderate success (win 6 or 7 games, lose in the first round of the playoffs a couple of years in a row) and then looking to move on, could they get?

Unless Scott is going to grow to 6A status or drop to the 4A level, I just can't see any coach making that big of a difference.

And again it isn't as if Scott has a terrible program. Imagine if the KHSAA doesn't allow teams to play up and they were in a district comprised of Dixie, Holmes, Grant Co., and Scott. That's a situation that a coach taking the program in a different direction could suceed.

  3. Can Any NCC fans on here that can tell me where Frank Jacobs and Nick Sandfoss are, they played on the NCC team that came to Corbin in 86 and beat them. From what i remember Frank Jacobs was a man among boys and Nick Sandfoss had speed to burn. Do any of the 07 NCC players have speed comparable to Sandfoss. I'm looking forward to the trip north and hope that the game will be as good as advertised. GO Hounds!!!!!:walk:

About halfway down this page in an article dated Dec 31, 2006 is a story about Frank Jacobs.

  6. Tough coaching situation with the twin 1000 pound gorillas sitting in the Park Hills and Fort Thomas corners. Add to that the 500 gorilla sitting behind the KFC on Dixie Highway and who would you hire that would not be using this job to get to another job?

Don't mean to be harsh, and quite frankly it is just a stroke of bad fortune (or bad decision-making) or bad geography or bad karma, that allowed Highlands and CovCath into the same district as Scott therefore making it a very tough position to fill.

  7. And if it is the particular freshman that I think they are talking about it would be his older brother that he would be replacing . A sibling rivalry perhaps ? I think not .

I think the point was there are other SRs and JRs that have been back-ups and playing in sub-time and in this case a Fr. was used late in the game.

Bottom-line is that next year there will be about 23 Seniors, about 9 Juniors of which 8 are linemen, and about 23 Sophs who were very talented as Frosh this year. Some of those 23 Sophs are going to have to make major contributions next year for NCC to continue to have success.

  8. In my opinion, they need to keep with the players that got them this far. Stay with what works because obviously something was not clicking last Friday.

They have stuck with the same players. What NKU20 was referring to was at the end of the Newport playoff game with the subs playing and the final TD was scored by a Frosh. After the Frosh season is over a few are asked to practice and dress for playoff games. That has been the case for quite a few years now.

Anyway the 28-0 playoff game was just about the same as the 14-0 regular season game except both teams turned it over a lot more. So not sure that you can garner any information from that one.

  9. I have been told that NCC is quick on the defensive line though not very big, with LB's and DB's that fly to the ball and like to hit. That unfortunately sounds similar to Belfry who shut out Corbin. Corbin's two leading rushers were playing their first varsity game in that outing and I don't think that either started and only carried the ball a couple of times combined. Their maturation has made Corbin more of a running team than a passing team, but I would not be surprised to see Corbin throw for much more yardage than they run for Friday night while going with more offensive sets and formations that can be very confusing to the defense.

I think Corbin will score a few TD's , I'm more worried about stopping NCC's passing attack.

How big is Newport Catholic's defensive line? I would guess that Corbin averages about 275 lbs. on the offensive line.

It appears this will be a Corbin size versus Newcath speed match-up on both sides of the ball.

When Corbin has the ball they will need the big O-line to grind out yardage on first and second down and stay out of passing situations. NCC's defensive line isn't small (245, 215, 215, 175) but quickness is their strength and the linebackers have size and speed too. Plus if Corbin does pass then NewCath must find a way to pressure the QB.

When NewCath has the ball the spread offense needs to get ball carriers and receivers into open spaces and use the no huddle to keep Corbin off balance. If Corbin's defense can get a few quick stops and turn the ball back over to a controlling offense, they can shorten the game and win. If they give up quick scores they could lose.

How's Corbin's special teams? Still think that is going to be a major part of this game.

  10. When is saw them play 23,56,59 75 76 and 82 come to mind as playing boths ways alot. As well most of corbin gets a breather when they need it.

23 will play on offense as a motion receiver and some at DB/LB. 59 and 77 primarily play DT but can also see duty on the offensive line. 75 and 82 are pretty much all defense. 76 plays both ways.

The QB is actually the long-snapper for punts and is one of the best downfield cover players.

  12. Not the case at Pius. In fact, its probably the opposite. Pius plays in the weekly Catholic school league plus 2 games per week in the public school league plus weekend tourneys. I remember one year when they played approximately 55 games. Others have been in the 35+ range.

Some schools (do not know about Pius) have instituted a "school games and practices must come first if there is a conflict policy" and that has forced some players to choose between a school team versus non-school teams.

  13. Corbin has four or five men that goes both ways, so does NCC and the ones that do can play four quarters full out. After seeing NCC play it looks like both teams are very well balanced. Fatique should not be a factor on either side Friday night. Don't think NCC has seen a team like Corbin this year. Should be a fantastic game. College recruiters should get their passes early. Plenty of boys to go on to the next level here. Good luck!!!!!!

NCC only has one player that plays the majority of plays both ways and that is OT/DE Geisler.

Part of the advantage that NCC has had since 2000 over other small schools is that their QB and primary RB only play offense. That is the same again this year along with the center, the wide receivers, and most of the linemen. A couple of players can see some action on both sides of the ball but it is limited. For example, linebackers can also see time at fullback but that may only be 4 or 5 plays a game. Most eveyone in the secondary could play offense if needed, but they primarily play defense only.

That also helps the special teams too since many starters also play on special teams since they only play one way.

That depth is really helpful when preparing in practice for a team as good as Corbin.

  14. I heard that Pius' top players in 7th grade are only playing AAU ball. I don't get that.

Probably because if they play for their school they have 1 game and 1 (maybe 2 if they are lucky )hour long practice sessions per week.

Playing AAU they can usually play 3 or 4 games a week and practice a couple of times a week.

If you try to do both there are usually time conflicts, so some players have just given up playing for the school team.

A couple of years ago I saw the final of a Catholic grade school tournament on a Saturday night between 2 Catholic 8th grade school teams. The game went to double OT and as players from both teams fouled out of the game they left the gym because they all had an AAU game starting at 9 PM.

  15. My understanding is that Letcher County Central has a 'running' QB that is the top rusher on the team. Do they run from the wishbone and run the option? Sounds like the Boyle Co. offense of old when Smith QB'd...

Also, this game will either start at 7:30 or even as late as 8:00pm Friday evening. The 7:00 pm HHS football kickoffs were only a N Ky conference aggreement. Of course, if you want to come early... :dancingpa

It could start at 7 if both teams agree to it.

I believe that last year with no school to worry about, some of the games the day after Turkey day started at 7 so that the visiting team could get home by midnight.

Makes sense if you think about it. If the game starts at 7 and ends at 9:30 even with a 2-3 hour drive you get home at around midnight.

  16. Couple of keys in this game:

    1. NewCath will have to stop the Corbin run game and force them into unfamiliar passing down and distance. Lots easier to pass and run on 2nd and 3 than it is 2nd and 9.

    2. Corbin will have to hang with the speed of NewCath on the edges and not allow any long runs after catches.

    3. NewCath special teams have been stellar all year and that will have to continue that to beat a good team like Corbin.

    4. I'm not sure how many people go both ways for Corbin but NewCath has very few that play both and they do not play every play. NewCath will have about 30-35 players see significant time and that has been a big reason they could beat 5A and 6A schools, and only helps against other 2A schools.
