  1. I do not understand why Boone County teams (Ryle included) have such a lack of balance. Perhaps it's contentment with just getting to the big game instead of winning the big game. Boone has some nice athletes but has ZERO chance to beat Trinity with typical BC play calling. Perhaps Boone's coaches will give their players a chance by mixing it up, passing to Farris, the TE, a mix of receivers, throwing on running downs, 50/50 mix, etc., but it's hard to become a balanced team when you don't work on it during games. Best of luck to BC as all of us up here would like to see a huge upset. You will need to force many TO's to hang around with an excellent team like the Rocks that are 5-6 TD favorites.

I think you hit on it exactly. In order to win district games and even the non-district games in NKY the NKY 6A teams try to out-man the other team and run it down their throat. That works if you want to win the district, but doesn't do any good once you get deep in the playoffs.

What I would hope would happen is that they (NKY 6A coaches) would realize it really doesn't matter if you win a lot of district games anymore because nearly everyone makes the playoffs. And you don't have to travel for district playoff games anymore. Therefore throw the ball, open it up, become balanced. You see it works well for the other classes in NKY. Just do it. You are never going to beat T, X, Male, and about 3 other teams in any given year by being one-dimensional.

  2. I always say a team's losses show a lot.

Beechwood lost to 5A CovCath 14-7 and mis-managed clock and time-outs at the end of the game when on the goaline. Plus it was a rare special night game at CovCath for Senior night.

Beechwood lost to 2A NewCath 41-28 in a game that they had to come from behind a couple of times. Trailed 17-7 and 31-14 before closing to 31-28 and then turning it over a couple of times in the last 3 minutes to lose 41-28. That game was at Beechwood and it was also their Senior night.

Frankfort lost 24-13 to 4A Franklin Co who finished 9-3 at Frankfort.

Frankfort lost to 37-13 to 6A North Hardin who finished 3-8 and that game was also at Frankfort.

Can anyone provide details on these games?

  3. Is it just me or does Mark Kelly never get a hole to run through? If it weren't for him breaking at least 2 tackles everytime he gets the ball he wouldn't have any yards.

It is the same problem Vickers had for awhile at the beginning of last year. When you spread the field and do not have any lead blockers it is hard for 5 offensive lineman to block 7 or more defenders. The wideouts do block well but if you can't get beyond the line it doesn't matter. It is part of the price for using so many wideouts and running out of the shotgun with no fullback and no tight end.

Last year after the terrible effort on offense against Holy Cross, NCC finally decided to run the ball out of a running formation against Bellevue and Vickers had something silly like 219 yards on 9 carries.

Plus NCC is committed to not playing people two ways for the most part. I think they could pound the ball if they wanted to by having DL Keating and Wedding go both ways and play OL.

  4. There has to be put in place a system to where the officials who land these types of games be evaluated better. I know they get the games as a crew. The group at NCC/Corbin game have absolutely no reason being put in a game of this magnitude. It's not fair to anyone, especially the teams that are competing. This is like asking a barber (no offense) to perform a triple bi-pass operation. There has to be better crews out there not getting these games. I'm crying foul on this one it's simply wrong.:argue:

Got to remember when you increase the number of classes you increase the number of crews working this deep in the playoffs. There were 24 regional games this year versus 16 last year. And there will be 12 semis next week versus 8 last year.

Plus maybe we get spoiled by the efficiency of NKY refs all year.

  6. I was wondering about that, I wasn't sure if they picked up the flag or what?

I meant to ask and forgot, where were these refs from?

Actually the calls resulted in some good comedy:

    1. On the NCC pass that was dropped the refs never blew the whistle or gave a incomplete signal and the ball just laid on the turf about 3 yards from the Corbin sidelines. The Corbin sideline was yelling at their players to pick the ball up, and their players were like "Huh?"

    2. On the dropped NCC screen pass that was about 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage but one official called illegal downfield, the refs all huddle together and one points to spot were the pass was thrown which was clearly behind the line. The white hat looks at the spot, looks at the LOS marker on the sideline, and just when you expect him to waive it off, calls it illegal downfield which Corbin declined.

    3. On the late hit out of bounds I think they did mark it off but strangely they marked it from the spot of the first of two flags and not where the runner ended up going out of bounds. Two flags were thrown about 12 yards apart. One about where the QB went out and was hit late and the other back about 12 yards. The signal was for a personal foul but they marked it off from the first flag after huddling about it. Then they stopped the game again just before the next snap and moved the ball forward another yard. Very bizzare.

    4. And on a side note but this crew considers time outs and between quarters to be a minimum of like 5 minutes. Maybe it was just the cold, but I think the NFL has shorter time outs than this crew.

  7. Well, well you kind of got the feeling it was going to be "one of those bad nights" for the Breds when they stopped Corbin cold on the first series and then proceeded to rough the kicker on a punt that went maybe 15 yards. And its not like they almost blocked it. The first guy there actually held up and did not hit the punter but 2 or 3 others did.

Corbin would take advantage of that and another personal foul and smash the ball in for a 7-0 lead. NCC would counter to make it 7-7 and one would think maybe things would settle down. But NCC continue to play awful and Corbin continued to play smart and took a 10-7 lead.

Then add in all the high snaps that mess up all the blocking schemes. And then snap one so far over the QB's head it is almost physically impossible. And then try the Breds tried to pick it up instead of falling on it. Corbin once again took advantage of a blown coverage and scored to lead 16-7. You know it was a bad half for the Breds when they only put up 7 points and did not have to punt until 40 seconds were left in the half.

Second half Breds played better and Corbin made a big mistake jumping offsides on a NewCath 4th and 2 from the 7 giving the Breds a first down. Breds really had to work for the TD and on 4th down finally cut the lead to 16-14. Uncle MO showed up on the Breds side and they would score again to on a long run to take a 21-16 lead.

Still Corbin hung tough on offense and defense and had every chance to take the lead on another blown coverage but the receiver could not hang on to the ball.

Finally faced with 1st and 10 from their own 2 with just under 3 minutes to go, the Corbin offense could not get anything going against an inspired NCC defense and the Breds did not allow a yard taking over on the Corbin 2. NCC would punch it in on 3rd down to take a 28-16 lead with 2 minutes to go.

Overall these teams are pretty equal and NCC was fortunate to not get buried in the first half when they played so horribly and Corbin played so solid.

Corbin has some athletes that stick pretty darn well. And the QB throws a nice ball and actually was a lot more mobile than what was expected. Plus Corbin was every bit as good on special teams. NewCath has made a lot of mistakes since playing pretty well against quality teams Campbell Co and Beechwood to close the regular season. Just have not been that sharp since then on offense and the defense has played well enough for them to win.

  8. Based on what I know about NC's situation I dont see how they could sit Tabor. If she learns anything from Cundiff it's going to be while she's standing next to her helping her rebound.

Don't think he was implying that. She will play and play a lot this year, and then next year it will be difficult to not have her on the floor 100% of the time.

  9. The NewCath vs Beechwood regular season game from 2006 is on now.

Strange game in that NewCath just dominated the LOS in the first half on offense while running the ball down Beechwood's throat. Then in second half Beechwood flat out shut down the NCC rushing game and came back to win.

Never saw such extremes in two halves.

  10. That's funny. Ours will be too. After the game we can sneak into Ft. Thomas and grab a few deer. They have so many they don't know what to do with them all. Bring your rifles and some rope we'll hook ya up with some good Ft. Thomas Venison.

Who needs a rifle for the deer? If you just open your car door and call them 4 or 5 will hop in your car. The other 10 will just continue eating every plant in your yard.

  11. More prep sports programmimg on ICN-6 is a good thing. Probably only done because the other ICN-6 shows weren't being produced because of the holiday.

I'd rather watch Sports Page, Charlie Coleman's NKY Sports Legends, or NKU Sports or the Color Bars than some of the stuff on ICN-6.

BTW if you have digital cable you can watch every high school Football game and Basketball game and every highlights show ICN-6 has done from 2007 on demand for free.

  12. Realizing of course that the goal of a school system should be the best education and not winning football championships.............but if you really want to break the X and T domination have the public school systems quit building new schools in areas were growth has occurred.

In NKY a new school will be opened next year in Boone County because the current schools (Ryle, Boone, Conner) are all over 1600-1700 students. Now if left alone those all would easily surpass 2000 in a couple of years and become nearly as large as X and T within 5 years. But thankfully there are resources to build a new school and the correct decisions were made.

vs. Breathitt County (Papa John's) L 0-51, FieldTurf

Well that is interesting. Not sure how much it matters but 10 of NewCath 12 games were on turf.

Obviously the NewCath home games this year were all on turf as well as the Beechwood, CovCath, and Simon Kenton games. Plus the playoff games were on turf. Plus both scrimmage games come to think of it. Actually the only time NewCath played on grass this year was at Ryle and at Lloyd.

  14. With the weatcher conditions and stuff and the fact of it being such a big game it was bound not to be a blowout ya know.

As far as these teams go, I have a lot and I mean a lot of respect for both teams after each of them has came to Belfry for the Pike County Bowl past 2 seaons. Both of them were beaten by the Pirates but both teams showed a lot of talent and most of all class. I would have no problem seein my Pirates play teams like you guys every year.

    Good luck to both teams.

Good points as the weather dicated a more cautious approach in that Belfry/Lloyd match-up. I would conceed that led to less scoring than if played in normal conditions. And I agree that this one is a close one either way too. Would like to see more long distance games among the better teams in all classes at the beginning of the year since there are fewer district games.

  15. The last time a 2A team from the Southern (Well... South-east) part of the state went to NKY in the playoffs was in 2003 when Belfry beat Lloyd on a cold, cold, snowy night en route to their state title.:D

That Belfry team was a obviously a very good one as noted by the state title and actually I was surprised they did not win by more against Lloyd because I thought they were a much better team. That Lloyd team was not a good team NKY-wise as they lost to Dixie by 31, to NCC by 29, and to Beechwood by 27 that year.
