  1. This was a shocker, not that SW lost but the margin. I don't know but this is a bunch of years in a row with (and I'm sure the SW supporters can tell me) that SW has failed to make it past the 2nd week of the playoffs with a bunch of scholarship athletes on their squad. I know that SW gets a lot of credit statewide for their schedule and their style of football but at some point this has to quit being an accident. They've lost as a favorite and an underdog, both at home and on the road. It just seems that maybe this coaching staff is better at marketing their players and program and not so good at truly competing at a state level. I'm not saying that's anything to be ashamed of mind you--all those kids with scholarships will attest to that. This was supposed to be the year that a balanced offense took them deep into the playoffs--didn't happen and I don't think its going to. I think it is decision time at SW. Go with a genuinely good person who tries to help his kids get to the next level or try to win--evidently it can't be both. I guess if were up to me I'd leave it as is--but there would be some changes on the staff and on offense.

  2. Somerset was impressive tonight on offense and defense. It seems like each week someone different steps up on offense and has a big night--the coaching staff has done an excellent job this year of finding and exploiting the holes in that week's opponents defense. I predicted 42-24 I'm a little bit suprised that Somerset shut down Pikeville's offense like they did. Like we tried to tell you Legaer28 this isn't the last 2 years. Congrats Jumpers take the region next week!

  3. Like I said earlier giving up 52 to Hazard threw up a red flag for me. I felt like they'd have a hard time keeping Somerset under 35 points. I seems like Somerset has found something to pick on. However, there's plenty of time left I'm sure Pikeville will make some adjustments at the half. It will be Somerset's ball coming out of the break.

  4. Somerset got the ball back, converted a 4th and 9 from Pikeville's 45 yard line. The drive stalled on the 17 and a field goal attempt was wide left. Somerset leads at the half 21-7. Ray Norman is just shredding Pikeville's pass defense since the first drive. Pikeville is fortunate to only be down 14.

  5. Because of their lackluster playoff history I'd be inclined to pick against SW in this one. However, I think that this year the tougher schedule will make a difference. SW had a chance to fold and go home early last week and found a way to win, I think the confidence gained by doing that coupled with the tests they have already faced this year will carry them this week. I'll say SW 24-BE 14--the Warriors make school history and advance to their first regional title game. Good luck Warriors and Jumpers this week!

  6. It is the Playoffs IMO you should beat a team as bad as you can beat them! I can see why you are mad. Not many people would be happy getting beat 71-40! Congrats to Evarts on a good football season! :thumb:

There is nothing ever to be gained by beating someone as bad as you can. The fact is you should never lay down but you should respect your opponents effort. There are no style points here--either you win or you lose but this isn't about Litratings or anything like that--if you think your team is really at risk then do what you have to. If not the other kids have worked every bit as hard as your team is and whether you win by 1 or 70 it doesn't matter. However no one is impressed by scoring on a defeated opponent when the game is already decided. Good luck against Lynn Camp because if Evarts scored 40 on your defense you're looking at giving up 60 this week!

  7. Ummm I think that's pretty much what I just said. Anyway, what I was getting at is the past is the past--the teams from the last 2 years aren't playing this week. This is a different year. Pikeville is aboulutely capable of beating Somerset but they have little margin for error. Like I said Pikeville's defensive performance against Hazard's passing offense puts up all kind of red flags for me. I think they'll have a hard time keeping Somerset below 35 points--while I'm not ready to compare Somerset's defense with the '85 Chicago Bears I think that will be enough to win. DragonPappy--you've seen both teams, what do you think?

  8. Do ya wanna talk about LAST year, then? :jump:

Or we could talk about 2000 when Pikeville was favored and lost. This year is all that matters and looking at scores Pikeville doesn't have the defense it has had in the past and that will be a big problem this week. It was obvious that Hazard was not nearly as good as Lynn Camp and they dusted Pikeville--these are high school kids we're talking about so scores can vary week to week but according to what Evarts scored on Paintsville and what Lynn Camp did to Hazard it looks like the defenses are a little weaker than normal in district 8. Somerset has put point on the board on everyone including Danville--Pikeville can win if they can hold the ball and keep the score in the 20's but beyond that they don't have the firepower.

  9. Somerset was favored and at home two years ago also. Therefore, I'll take Pikeville.

All we're hearing is about 2 years ago. The thing is this isn't 2 years ago. I haven't seen Pikeville and they always have a solid team--however, giving up 52 points to Hazard who is not nearly as fast as Somerset throws up some red flags about their defense. I don't think Somerset will necessarily stop Pikeville either but I think the Jumpers score at will and win something to the tune of 42-28.

  10. If Paintsville doesn't get some more guys healthy, it will be a very tough game to win. Also, if we don't do something to slow down Lynn Camp's running game, we are in trouble. I believe that Paintsville will come up with something to slow down Lynn Camp's offense and our offense will continue to roll. Pugh may have had the best single game performance of the year. His numbers are like the ones you see on NCAA 2006 for PS2 when you are playing on JV mode! Not to disrespect Evarts, their rushing yardage was also a WOW stat. As, much as I worry about Lynn Camp's running attack, I am sure they are a little worried about the numbers our offense put up tonight without our starting RB, a starting WR(Brown), and a WR that had to be moved to RB.(Freno). Also a starting OL did not play offense due to an injury (Collet).

    My early prediction(subject to change)

    PHS 44

    Lynn Camp 36

Will all those players be back next week? If not their defense will certainly have to improve.

  11. Good job Southwestern--that's why I'd like to see Somerset and SW play every year. Your fans come out no matter the record, I just don't feel like PC's fans support their team like than unless you can dribble the ball in question. I think that is why all the SW/Somerset games go down to the wire and the other series(es) are mostly blowouts. Both of our teams have fans that support them whether they are 10-1 or 1-10. That comes from tradition and while SW may at only 12 years old not have that much tradition their coaches come from schools that have it and they pass it on. Good luck SW I hope you take the Rebels down in a couple of weeks and we can join y'all in Louisville.

  12. I really don't care to much football fields that has a track around them.

It seems like you are 80 yards away from the sidelines.

At our (Middlesboro) field and others like Corbin and Pineville you are right on top of the action.

Middlesboro did have a good playing surface and a historical (read old) set of bleachers but the had the absolute worst locker room I was ever associated with my entire career. Of course I graduated in 1988 so it may have changed but it really took away from everything else.
