  1. Heres the thing about Wilson Sears and Somerset. If you don't live in their district you can attend their "Independent" school system for a fee. I would think, if it is a fee, it would be called tuition. Over the years Somerset has had several athletes who lived in the Pulaski or Southwestern district attend Somerset, And pay tuition. Most of the well heeled students most always lived out in the County. Somerset has lost kids to the county when they entered the 9th grade but over the last 2 years they have gained several promising middle schoolers as well. IMO Somerset operates like a private except they don't have the success that most privates do. When they have lost to a larger school, size is always the excuse. For years they have always targeted the best young athletes and included them in their AAU, club or All star teams in hope of getting them to switch. I am a public school person. Always have been, always will be. I have family who attend a private school. Targeting young athletes will always go on. It does in public schools as well as private schools. I agree that open enrollment is the answer. As a parent I think anyone should have the right to send their child to any school for any reason. That being said were going to pass the offering plate now......

Yes you can attend Somerset if you pay tuition--to the county schools. Somerset does not set the fees nor limit the amount of kids that can attend their school. This is all set by the Pulaski County School system--all fees are paid to them and there is a strict limit on the number of kids from the county that are allowed to attend the city schools. As for success Somerset has more than held its own against the two larger county schools with an overall winning record against both in the three major boys sports over the last 13 years in which there has been 3 schools in the county--along with the best test scores of the 3. :thumb:

  2. As a matter of fact they can. National publications are not as accurate at the HS level on account of the simple logistical difficulties in scouting and getting an accurate comparison between thousands of schools around the nation.

Exactly, If I'm not mistaken a few years back some sportswriters made up a fictional prep basketball player, talked about his performance and stats over the summer. Presto--he was instantly a top 200 prospect. Who really cares about rankings, this isn't college--the best team wins on the field--not in the polls. If you don't like your ranking do something about it!

  3. Edit>cut

Sorry, decided to retract my comment.

Man, I'm gonna miss that fumble-rooskie.

Having the intention to deceive is a lame argument. Why do we have fake handoffs, blitzes, snap counts etc. It takes guts to put the ball on the ground to try to move it forward it should be allowed. I'm not questioning your interpretation of the rule but football is all about deception. Otherwise the biggest, fastest team would always win.

  4. I don't have a dog in the fight and I guess if you look at it emotion wise it could be any city/county or neighborhood brawl. But if you think any other rivalry is going to fill up a major college stadium for a game you're fooling yourself. The fact is Louisville is the biggest city in the state and St. X and Trinity are the two baddest boys on the block--everyone wants to see them fight. I don't think this one is even up for debate. To do otherwise would be like comparing the EKU-WKU rivalry to the UK-UL rivalry, the kids may care just as much, but in general it isn't noticed as much.

  5. I thought that Mayfield and Paducah Tilghman was a big rivalry! What's the average attendance of this rivalry?

I know that one used to be a huge rivalry. It was featured nationally in the Magazine section of the Sunday paper once back in the late 80's. I was wondering how it was now myself. Has Tilghman's change in status from an elite program to a solid program affected the rivalry. (No disrespect to Tilghman intended but previously it seemed as though they were in the semis or the finals all the time).

  6. However, you cant leave out the 99 squad and last years team!

They were state runner-up 4 times from 78-88. Not included in that was the 82 team that lost one game by one point to Boyle Co. and didn't get into the playoffs that year since only the district champ made it. The next week they went to Corbin and waxed the Redhounds, who would go on to win the state title, by something like 34-0. Somerset lost a total of 3 games from 82-84 but couldn't bring home the title.

  7. For Somerset:

    *Corbin

    *Middlesboro

    *Leslie Co.

    *Knott Co.

    Pulaski Co.

    Southwestern

    South Laurel

    Clay Co.

    Lynn Camp

    Russell Co.

Its got a mix of county, and former district rivals. Lynn Camp has provided some entertaining games, we haven't played the Laurels in awhile but that was always a fun game and the middle schools at Clay and Somerset have developed a good rivalry.

  8. Nice post, I wish the jumpers well in all but one game this year, I hope they represent D-7 well. :thumb:

Good luck to The Campers too LC99. That was one heck of an entertaining game last year, I hope this year's can come close. As much as I love to root for the Jumpers I can honestly say there isn't a team in our Region that I have any dislike for. I know most of the other teams don't consider us a "mountain" team but when I played we were in a district with Corbin and Middlesboro and played Laurel and Cumberland every year so we identified with the mountain schools more. You always have some very insightful comments regarding our area--keep them up. Ohh and I'm looking forward to kicking your rear in WF's fantasy league this year :thumb:

On a side note, is it just me or is 20 teams at least 4-6 too many for that league?

  9. Dolphins fan, pm me your e-mail address and I'll send you an invitation. This will make 7 teams, need 13 more if possible.

No disrespect intended but if we have 20 teams won't we have a heck of a time covering our bye weeks for our quarterbacks and defenses. A team could pick up 2-3 qb's or defenses when his opponent has a bye week and win because the other team will get zeros. 16 teams is a really big league. Just a suggestion, I'll play regardless.
