  1. Absolutely!!!!!! Well, just like we have all wanted to do, and what anyone in Fort Thomas wants to do, we are making things better for our children and affording them the things that we didn't have.

No doubt! I was stunned to see the new light poles sitting on the sidelines when we headed to the Valley for our last 5/6 game of the year!

  2. My wife and I ate there a few weeks back. The interior definitely looks a lot better, however it was not enough to cover for the lack of service and the extremely mediocre food. I had the rueben, my wife had a burger. Quick bit to eat however it was pathetic. My rueben had about two ounces of meat and even less sauerkraut. There was literally about a half an inch of untouched bread on the outside of the sandwich because of the lack of substance. My wifes burger might have been the size of the mini's at Ruby Tuesdays. The best meal of all was probably the little one's grilled cheese. It was larger than both of our meals combined. They took the grilled part to heart however, it was like charcoal on the outsides. Needless to say we all left looking for something else to snack on. Its one thing for me to leave hungry, but my wife is not a big eater. We will not return.

  3. OK, so this is long...but hilarious. This is why people dont try to trap and move them to a new location:

A true story by an anonymous Gentleman Rancher

I had this idea that I was going to rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a several weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that since they congregated at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down), then hog tie it and transport it home. I filled the cattle feeder, then hid down at the end with my rope.

The cattle, who had seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes my deer showed up...3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it. It took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope and received an education.

The first thing that I learned is that while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on the rope. That deer EXPLODED!

The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope with some dignity. A deer, no chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only up side is that they do not have as much stamina as some animals. A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head, but I then managed to get up.

Right at that point I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope. I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that evil deer. At that moment, I hated the thing and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual. Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in, so I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death. I managed to maneuver it back in between my truck and the feeder...a little trap I had set beforehand. Kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite? THEY DO! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody so I was very surprised when I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head...almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts. The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the bejesus out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.

Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp. I learned a long time ago that when an animal like a horse strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape. This was not a horse. This was a deer, so such trickery did not work. In the course of a millisecond I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and three times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

Now when a deer paws at you and knocks you down it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head. I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.

Now for the local legend. I was pretty beat up. My scalp was split open, I had several large goose eggs, my wrist was bleeding pretty good and felt broken (it turned out to be just badly bruised) and my back was bleeding in a few places, though my insulated canvas jacket had protected me from most of the worst of it. I drove to the nearest place, which was the co-op. I got out of the truck, covered in blood and dust and looking like hell. The guy who ran the place saw me through the window and came running out yelling, "Oh my God, What happened ?"

Now, I have never seen any law in the state of Texas that would prohibit an individual from roping a deer. I suspect that this is an area that they have overlooked entirely. Probably because they didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to try. And knowing, as I do, the lengths to which law enforcement personnel will go to exercise their power, I was concerned that they may find a way to twist some existing laws to paint my actions as criminal.

I swear....not wanting to admit that I had done something monumentally stupid played no part in my response. I told him, "I was attacked by a deer." I did not mention that at the time of the attack, it had my rope on it. The evidence was all over my body. Deer prints on the back of my jacket where it had stomped all over me and a large deer print on my face where it had struck me. I asked him to call somebody to come get me...I didn't think I could make it home on my own. So he did. Later that afternoon, a game warden showed up at my house and wanted to know about the deer attack. Surprisingly, deer attacks are a rare thing and Parks & Wildlife was interested in the event. I tried to describe the attack as completely and accurately as I could ...... "Well, I was just filling the grain hopper and this deer came out of nowhere and started kicking me and BIT me! It was obviously rabid or insane or something!" EVERYBODY for miles around now knows about the deer attack (the guy at the co-op has a big mouth). For several weeks people dragged their kids into the house when they saw deer around and the local ranchers carried rifles when they filled their feeders. I have told several people the story, but NEVER anybody around here. I have to see these people every day and as a relative outsider ( "gentleman rancher/city folk" some say)...I have enough trouble fitting in without them snickering behind my back and whispering, "There's the idiot that tried to rope the deer !!".

  4. While I can certainly understand the concern, I think you have to concede that you will never see someone in the streets hunting deer. Dont get me wrong here, I am not a hunter, never will be..but these buggers are everywhere. If I was the Rambo type...it woudl be nothing to use a survival knife to take out 9-10 each evening in my area.

  5. I don't think the coyote population in the urban area can be definitively tied to deer population. Anyway, that's not the point. The problem is not in the end; it's in the means to that end.

If you talk to anyone that is familiar with wildlife...they will tell you that in fact the more deer population you have, the coyotes will definitely find them. We do not have a major issue at this time with coyotes, however it wont be long behind.

I am not sure where you are getting your information on these hunts. The only info that I have gotten, and its comes from a pretty reliable source (one of the could/would be hunters), is that it would only be in wooded areas as far away as it can be from the heavier populated areas. We are not going to have Johnny Bowmaster running down the street chasing these animals.

  6. No one expects them to wipe out the species...

Just keep them out of my backyard while my dog's doing his business...he gets stage fright...

Mine too! They stop what they are doing and take off after them.

So BF, do you have any pets around the house? As the population of deer continues to rise, you had better invest in a nice piece of hardware to keep the coyotes away from little fluffy when he/she goes outside. This is a fact, its not just cute little ole Bambi and friends running around, its the additional critters that will come along with them that will cause even greater issues!

Dont get me wrong, I think deer are some of the most beautiful creatures roaming the earth. However, its also time to do something about the population around here. You are NOT going to stop development...that is just a fact.

  7. Noticed the same thing about the South endzone. I am sure they will slap another coat on before the next home game. Overall though...looks great!! And by the way, it sure is nice to be able to hear the annoucer during the game. Those old cabinets on the poles had seen better days, thats for sure! Now if we could just get some better recordings for the dance team to perform to...we would be all set. We have a nice new system, and the recording sounded like it was made on a 19 dollar radio shack cassette recorder.

  8. Silver, I would have to agree. What the heck were those stupid things. At one point...we turned around to talk to the folks behind us about them and noticed EVERYONE in the stands either swatting, waiving or just leaving. It was just like looking at a scene from a movie! My wife had enough...she said, Im going to the car...I will see you later!! LOL.

  9. I just get a kick out of this every week. It seems as though our "talent pool" that every one keeps mentioning has gotten smaller(in physical size) over the last several years. We all know what the line looked like for Jared and Gino, but since Gino things have been much smaller on the O line. I say I get a kick out of this because whether you look at the size of the goal line D for Dixie, or the size of the Trotwood lines...our lines are just handling whatever comes their way. I have to give major props to these guys, players and coaches. It just goes to show you that size is only part of the equation, technique is what these boys are using as the major advantage and just blowing people off the ball.

    Well done players, coaches, everyone!

  10. What an outstanding game to watch! It was a great feeling walking out of a big venue on Labor Day weekend with a win under our belts! Congratulations boys, this one was HUGE.

Couple of things that stood out to me. 1.) Bathiany...what can you say? Only one kickoff that didnt make it to the endzone and the coverage was good enough to stop the return at the 21. 2.) Defensive goal line stand at the 1. To be able to put that O line on their heels over and over again was flat out impressive. 3.) O line play was stellar on the run offense. Once again, bigger guys on the D line and on almost every play of the game they were stood straight up and pushed backwards. 4.) I have watched him play now for several years and in my opinion Collinsworth became a MAN last night. Blowing up at least two plays in the back field and then with rockets on his shoes tracked down the long pass play and got the tackle on about the 1 yard. That play was called back on a penalty anyway, but the speed was very impressive!

If you missed this one live, you missed a monster.

Excellent TEAM win guys, we look forward to many more this season!!!

  11. I have been on and around many different boats over the years. My wife and I would like to get one at some point in the near future. My only problem is, as with most other hobbies, the type of watercraft I really like are WAY out of my budget. In reality all I need is something we can pull a couple of tubes behind and have fun with the kids. (I know I know...that is pretty much any boat!!)

  12. That stuff really does look useful. I'd love to have a tazer. Maybe TD can show me which ones are the best?

The best thing about the Life-Act systems...they are 42 bucks!! So you are not out a lot of cash for decent protection. I have three of them.

  13. Pat - like many others have stated, that BB gun is fun for the back yard and the back yard only. You are going to do nothing but really tick someone off. I understand that some people are not fond of guns, or do not have the experience to become fond of them. If I were you and was looking for something that you could actually use for defense...take a look at something like this.

As for me...I will stick with my Kimber .45 and a few Speer Gold Dots, or... well we will leave it at that.

  14. I used to spend summers with my cousins in Northern Penn, right along the New York border. The property was lined on both sides by fairly decent size farms so we never had to wait for rain, the farmers took care of the water for us. We would take three to four dozen a night just to hit the small ponds around the area each and every morning. Much like you guys are talking...boy those were the days!!!

  15. Welcome, mexitucky from one NewCath grad to another. I made the decision to move here 20 years ago, best decision I've ever made. :thumb:

Except for the wildlife issues of course! ;)

Oh, wait that was another thread....

  16. I honestly think it is what you get used to. I have had XM for about 4 years now and wouldnt have anything else. I have friends that started out with Sirius and say the same thing. Once you have one or the other, you wont want to switch.

  17. I am not disputing your information, you probably know more about the cost of vehicles than I do, but before I bought the program vehicle, I worked on buying a new GMC Denali with 37 miles, it stickered for $38K and when I walked away I had got the price down to $24K. Full discloser I did have a trade in that I would guess was valued at $6K. I am not sure they were giving me $6K for the trade in, but in your rational - maybe.

I dont know where you were looking at that Denali, but I just bought a Yukon. The sticker on the 2007 Denali was 52 and change and with my GM discount (retired family member) I was still only able to get it knocked down to 43. If you could have gotten it new for 38, I would have jumped on it!!

  18. I agree with you in that regard, someone comes in a room and starts shooting and you SEE the person in front of you, like the mall shooting. I'm just thinking as far as a random student in their dorm room, they hear about it, get their gun and go from there. That's the part that would bother me.

Cause you know someone would do that with the best intention, but they grab their gun to go help and then ANOTHER student sees them with a gun, etc, etc.

I agree it could be a catch 22. The issue is...its not about grabbing a weapon and going to help out. Just because you have the ability to carry a weapon does not make you a police officer. You only have the ability to save your own life if threatened in that manner. If you are planning on acting as law enforcement by going after someone...you need to rethink the idea of carrying at all because the courts will not be on your side when you try to explain that one.

Things like this are just so stinking irritating.
