  1. Like I said earlier, I think it is part of the game, especially because the catcher is blocking the plate. Essentially, he is using his body to his advantage, so the runner is just doing the same. Maybe the reason there are more collisions that seem senseless is because it seems to me at least like there are more catchers blocking the plate when a play isn't imminent. If you aren't going to have the ball, get the heck outta there or risk being run over...

  2. Ludlow could contend for the DIII crown if they have all their players and they keep their mind to it.

Seems to me they have some decent talent based on their recent JV seasons. I always thought there seemed to be a bit too much politics in that small town. Not sure they can compete for the crown or not. Calvary and Dayton both are expected to have decent seasons from what I hear, and Beechwood is in the mix too.

  3. I just recently received my copy of The Cats' Pause football preview in the mail today, and I must say that I was a bit underwelmed with the section on Kentucky high school football.

I have purchased this football preview every year for the past five years or so, and it seems to me that the amount of space devoted to HS football drops each time.

    Some thoughts about this:

    1. High school football (or more correctly, the coverage of high school football) has become a much bigger deal recently, with big events like the Herbie, MTV coverage of high school football teams, and ESPN national coverage of high school football games. There are many more national high school football rankings services/polls now as well. It just seems to me that in a state as football-crazy as KY, the state's major publication for football (i.e. The Cats' Pause) would cater to this appetite for prep football coverage by dedicating more time/space to the high school football preview portion of this magazine. Heck, this prep preview (as opposed to the part about UK football) has been the reason I have purchased this magazine for the past several years, so I definitely think that there's a "market" for this sort of thing in KY.

    2. Perhaps, in addition to the basic coverage of each team for the upcoming season, the magazine can review some things (like the playoffs) from the previous season. Perhaps it can spend some more time on the best player prospects for the upcoming season, and highlight some marqee match-ups for the upcoming season.

Also, and this is more related to UK football instead of prep football, but it deals with The Cats' Pause: I noticed that former HHS player Jordan Nevels was not listed on the roster. Is he no longer on the UK team?

I concur........coverage has shown to be quite inaccurate and limited in the past.

  4. I've been sitting on this one for a while, but as camp gets started, it looks like there is a very real chance he will be moved to the C spot. That would put it as...

    LT Levi Jones

LG Andrew Whitworth (signed today through 2013)

    C Bobbie Williams

    RG Stacey Andrews

    RT Willie Anderson

    Thoughts???

That line should be able to run block anyone...

  5. If we are going to get either of those guys plus Saltalamacchia for just Homer I will pick him up at the stadium and drive him to the airport. As a matter of fact I would even wait it out and pick up the guys coming in from Texas. And drive them back to the stadium. But I have no idea why the Rangers would do it...

  6. So the first thing that comes to mind for me in high school last regular season football game. Playing a rival. It rained for 3 days before the game, so all day I'm thinkin' there is no way were gonna get this in... Sure enough, the rain stops at about 6 that Friday. Problem now is, we might as well have played in a mud pit. This didn't make things easier because we were probably a little smaller but a little faster. Anyways, we played to a tie until the fourth when they scored to take a 6 point lead with less than 2 minutes, but then proceded to botch the kickoff out of bounds. We ran 3 plays and gained a total of five yards and called our last time out with roughly 30 seconds left needing 5 yards on a fourth and season. Completed a 7 yard out and stopped the clock with about 25 seconds. Next play was about a 50 yard bomb to the enzone in the misty rain which had started to fall again. But missed the XP, so we went into OT, where we scored and made the XP to go up 7. Took them to a 4th down and about 7 when they caught a tipped pass to score. Were waiting to get into XP block and they line up to run a 2 pt conversion. So were getting in alignment and stances as one of the LB's getting the defensive call from the sideline and yelling it to us while still lining up at his position, all while the offense is already into their cadence. We got everyone lined up at about the last sound before the ball was snapped. For about the first time all night I got my footing well enough to get off the ball fairly quickly and slid into the C gap. At this point I had 2 of their linemen converge on me and lost my footing/balance, but had seen that I had chosen the right gap as the back had already slowed his forward movement and was trying to move laterally. Next thing I know I am face down in mud and all I feel is weight accumulating and falling onto me. I turn to my left to see that my eye level was about even with the 5 yard line, and then see the feet of the ballcarrier finally stop. And at that point I knew he didn't make the endzone. I slid out of the bottom of the pile and stood up and just began yelling anything and everything I could think in the direction of our fan section, which was already beginning to empty onto the field... This was the first time we had beaten this rival since I had been in high school. To top it all off, after the post game meal at the post game hangout, someones parents ordered a limo and we road around in it for about an hour. Don't believe that I got home that night until 3-5 o'clock'ish. It was one of the more memorable nights that I have lived.

Needless to say, that game and night didn't lack drama or excitement...I sometimes think that you could turn that one into a movie if you tried hard enough.

  7. I'll tell one about my late grandfather.

When he was in high school, he played against the John Wooden, of UCLA fame, coached Dayton team. Many people don't kow Dayton HS was his first head coaching job. My grandfathers Holmes Castle(as it was known then) team beat Wooden and the Dayton squad. He also was a Lou Gherig day at Yankee Stadium when the Iron Horse retired due to illness.

Not as uncommon as you think... John Wooden's record in his first year coaching was something like 6-13...

  8. There are a lot of teams that would like to have a player like Adam Dunn. Maybe he doesn't hit for average, but he drives in runs, gets on base, plays everyday, etc.

For those that bash Dunn, do you also bash Edwin? He has extended bad streaks at the plate like Dunn. He hits a little higher average but less homeruns. His defense isn't great but its improving.

  9. Oh I just like what he had to say the other day. He is probably more inconsistent that Dunn.

I don't think Arroyo is inconsistant... Maybe throughout the year but at the end of the season he is gonna have 10-12 wins... Same pretty much with Dunn, he'll be hot and cold but he's gonna hit about .250 and hit 45+ homers and drive in 100 runs...

  10. I would say keep him. However, if we can get some type of (almost ready position)prospect for him that would help, do it; and use Griff's money for another pitcher.

I like him because he is steady... You know what you are gonna get out of him...

That said, people overpay for pitching. If they can get something good out of the deal go for it IMHO...

  11. If I were Jocketty I would inquire about both of them.

I don't understand the Huston Street interest.

Marty and Thom were going off during the game when someone sent an email saying the Reds were interested in Huston Street.

I agree about Francouer and Ohman.... What are the Braves looking for in return however... Francoeur has struggled this year, but he's only 24...
