When Sam Gibson picked up his 5th foul with still 3-4 minutes left I thought that was a big key to the Newport comeback late. I'm pretty sure it was an 8 or 10 point game when he fouled out and that opened up the paint for Newport and when they missed a shot were able to get the offensive rebounds and stick backs to get back in it.
So, to that point, when Sam picked up his 4th foul at the 7 min mark of the fourth, why in the world did Coach leave him in? Why not pull him and see how things go and then when they need him late, they can put him in? I thought that was a poor decision because, yes, Miller had a field day once Gibson was on the bench.
Also, why is this team unable to draw fouls? 6 FT attempts is not enough, especially when you have guys that can drive the basket and draw fouls like Ward and Meyer. They are going to have to do this at some point if they want to win meaningful games at EKU and or come districts/regional games. Do you agree Baseball Nut 24?

FINAL
Holy Cross - 74
Newport - 72
Newport tried to get off a shot from the corner but may have been partially blocked. They suffer their first loss in region this year. They are a good team that would have done some damage down state.
For Holy Cross, they are a Senior led team that fought tooth and nail all game. They NEVER TRAILED and led by as many as 15 points. They have got to clean up their 4th quarter play if they want to win the whole thing, I think.
That was fun, glad I came.

Losing #55 for Holy Cross has completely opened up the middle for #5, the Sr for Newport.
Less than a minute to go and we are tied for the first time tonight.

Great back and forth affair but the Indians just keep finding a way to stay ahead. This Newport team is talented. Started 2 Freshman, 1 sophomore, 1 Jr and 1 Sr.

Does nobody block out anymore? Is that no longer a thing?

This Jabari Covington kid for Newport is pretty good.
HC with a timeout, up 42-36, 5:56.
Possible injury watch. Newport fouled Javier Ward in the first possession and he hit the floor square on his back. Couldn’t make the FT attempts. Currently out of the game.
Back to back 3’s for HC.
48-36, HC

Did a statistician get tossed?
I don’t think so.

Getting a little chippy to end the half. Teams had to be separated after a hard foul as time expired.
Double technical fouls. One on each team. No shots taken as it was after the clock ran out…I guess?
Both teams leave the court.
Halftime

Going to be fun second half.

First time seeing either team this year. The Indians clearly like to run. They have hit several 3’s already and Newport only has 4 FGs and a FT.

Decided to check this one out for myself.
The gym is completely packed. Standing room only. The construction at Beechwood took up a lot of parking.
Looking forward to a great game.

Is Holy Cross the prohibitive favorite at this point? Just walloped Heritage and should do the same to Ludlow.

Those are great numbers. I’m asking, with the obvious size difference between 55 for HC and all of Highlands outside of Benke, why aren’t they going to him? Do they ever really use him?
Rebounds and putbacks. That’s it.
