    2023 Outcome

    Record: 4-8

2023 was a tough season for the Panthers as they only had 3 wins in the regular season and a first round win in the playoffs of Garrard Co. Losing to eventual State Champ CAL in the 2nd Rd.

🎓 Trey Durbin (RB/WR/DE), Greyson Hainer (QB/DB), Tyrin Jurnett (RB/DB), Braydon Dean (RB/DB), Alex Evans(TE/LB), Carter Moberly (OL/DL/LB), Sincere Washington(WR/DB)

🔙 Jquan Williams (WR/DB), Will Lynch (OL/DL, Connor Johnson (FB/LB)

    2024 Outlook

The Panthers will be under the direction of new HC Tyler Mattingly for the 2024 season. This will be the 3rd HC in 3 years for the program. There are massive holes to fill on both sides of the ball with graduation depleting most of the talent that was there in 2023. Jquan Williams can be a dynamic playmaker but injuries the past 2 years have seen his seasons cut short. Connor Johnson will have the most, if not the only significant experience returning to the backfield. With all the positions that are void of returners and experience, possibly the most glaring is the QB spot. Out of the 4 players who threw a pass last season, Hainer and Durbin both graduate and Caleb Irwin transferred to Central Hardin. The Panthers will also be on the road for 7 out of their 10 regular season games. It will be a rough year for these young guys. There is some talent coming up in the freshman class and some of those guys may have to step into varsity action before they are physically ready but if they can get through these next couple seasons I expect to see the Panthers back in the hunt.

Neither of these are the case.  Jackson hasn’t turned it down. He and Josh are pretty tight. I could see a definite possibility of him going there to help Tyler or if he turned it down maybe then some interest, but Jackson hasn’t turned the job down.

If that’s the case then why haven’t they announced Jackson as the new HC?

I have heard the name Tyler Mattingly in connection with this job.

    Anyone?

He had an interview. Personally, I think he would be an excellent choice for the job. He already has a SC under his belt as the OC for South Warren in 2021. Worked as an OC for his dad at CH before that.

  4. I've heard that interviews are happening as we speak. I would expect an announcement by the first part of next week.

Whoever the next coach is has some rebuilding to do over the next couple of seasons. The cupboard is somewhat bare at Etown with the current group. With QB Hainer gone, his backup transferring to Central Hardin leaves a huge question mark at that position. Add that to the loss of Trey Durbin, Alex Evans, Braydon Dean, Tyrin Jurnett, Carter Moberly and a few others and they have a lot of holes to fill and not a lot of talent to fill it with.

The MS group is good but it will likely take a couple of years for them to truly make an impact. I would expect this season to be a 1 maybe 2 win season and it doesn't help that 7/10 games will be on the road. Not ideal for an inexperienced group.

Talked to a coach today that will interview for the job. He is excellent. If he is the hire, they are going to be in great hands, and for a significant length of time.

Any hints as to who it might be? I know one younger coach who has applied. Comes from a coaching family and already has a SC under his belt as an OC.

Have you heard anything new from Etown? Information is hard to come by outta there!!

Not much. Seems very quiet which is surprising. The applicants they have must not be who they want because I know they’ve reached out to some other people.

I'm afraid they are going to miss the boat which could have major affects on the middle school group they have.

Radcliff still has a couple of teams that play in the LYFL don't they?  I'm assuming those are the "travel teams" you referred to.

And I think it's the E-town Ironmen that play in the MKYFC.  They usually put a fairly decent team on the field.

The Ironmen are Allstar teams formed out of the EAYF mentioned above. They only play tournaments at the end of the season.

The Etown Panther football teams are the ones that play in the MKYFC.

Radcliff does have a couple teams that play. They seem to bounce around to different leagues. Seems to be lots of infighting every yr amongst those teams which leads to new teams being formed etc. Same reason the North Hardin league ended up dissolving

Possible in theory? Sure. That would take multiple cities to come together and agree which school gets which league and who's going to coach the principles of each system for the 3 schools? Just a lot of coordination that I haven't seen from anyone in this county. Usually Etown league is Etown, Central and some John, Radcliff league is almost exclusively NH, little JH and Vine Grove is usually NH and JH split. The only school that is struggling with numbers (school wide/athletically) right now is John Hardin and that is because the board continues to neglect the youngest school in the district. From what I understand freshman enrollment is best it has been at JH in 6 years also. Feeder programs in Hardin Co are the Middle Schools. John Hardin actually hosts youth league games on their field as well.

So to give a little bit more clarification. The local league in Elizabethtown is the Elizabethtown Area Youth Football League. It has existed for 60 plus years and it has historically had kids from Elizabethtown and all over Hardin Co. Their numbers are good enough that they have 4-5 teams per age group and they play each other throughout the season and have their own championship etc...Kids are drafted by coaches in each age group and each team could be a combination of kids that go to multiple different schools.

There was also the North Hardin Youth Football League which mostly had kids from the north end of the county that would end up going to North Hardin or John Hardin. And for a few years there was the Hardin County League which mostly had kids from the South end of the county who would end up going to Central Hardin.

The North Hardin and Hardin Co. leagues no longer exist and there are a few different travel teams in the North end of the county that play in various leagues in the state.

3-4 years ago the Etown Panther Youth football program was developed. These kids all go to Etown Independent schools and they play in a league against schools from Larue, Taylor, Mt. Washington, Nelson etc....

For a program that has been to the big game this seems like a late development for a feeder system. @JellyRoll do you know what took so long to get this going? I know they have a really nice park for youth soccer and there are some football fields there as well. Is football just behind the curve? It would seem to me that every school district not just in Elizabethtown and Hardin County would want this along with everyone in the state.

There has been a youth football program in the area that has kids from Etown and most of Hardin county. It has existed for 60+ yrs.
So kids have been playing youth football.

The Panther program was developed 3-4 yrs ago in an effort to get all the kids who are attending Etown Independent Schools playing together at an earlier age leading into MS and HS.

Then HC Ross Brown wanted all levels to be running the same offense etc. of course he left before last season. The HS offense went in a completely different direction but I think the youth teams and MS were still running mostly wing t.

If I was one of the people conducting interviews for the new HC, one of my first question would be how involved they and their staff would be with the youth and MS programs.

Panther Academy is a significant advantage for Etown. These kids in Etown district grow up learning Etowns offense and defense and scheme from a young age. These kids stay learn and grow together from a young age. You can’t tell me that’s not an advantage.

3 yrs ago Etown Panther youth football started. They currently have 3rd/4th grade and 5th/6th grade teams. I think they may start a 1st/2nd grade team next season. They play in a league where the kids have to go to that school system.

The fact that all those kids will play together from a very young age and that feeds into 1 MS and then 1 HS should pay dividends for the Panthers in the coming yrs.

10? Lol that number seems pretty high. His name does get tossed around sometimes, but I can't remember him being mentioned for anything since he went to Lincoln a couple of years back. But that seems like a good problem for him to have, having connections in multiple places around the state and continually being mentioned as a good hire.

    He has applied

Very big job opening. Would rank it one of the best jobs historically speaking that I have seen open this cycle. I’ve heard 3 names already over the last 2 weeks. Big hire coming up for this program. ETown is always in the mix!

The 4 names I expected to apply have or are applying. Then there are a few others that are interested that may be unexpected.

I have heard a lot of noise around Thompson around the area as well, would have to expect he at least gets an interview. I agree with @JellyRollthough, it wouldn’t be the best hire for Etown. Etown has a very good support system with Panther Academy and being the only independent school in the county. With the FORD plant coming in, this is one of the best jobs available during this cycle. Also hearing rumblings about another job in Hardin County potentially coming open next couple of weeks…

I’m assuming by your name you are a JH supporter…I’ve been told your HC is one of the applicants as well.

I expect the CH job will be coming open. Pretty sure this was Mattinglys last season.

This will be an interesting hire.  Have heard some rumors and didn't believe it.

So I'm interested to see who they hire in Etown.  I think it's a good job for the future.

    Etown will continue to grow.

Do those in the know expect this to be decided soon or in the 1st quarter of next year?

Didn't know if there was a 30 day open window process, and interviews, etc. they will definitely do.

You probably heard the same rumor I did about a coach in your area. I don't believe it either. I believe the article posted in the local paper said they wanted to try and have the new coach in place before spring practice begins.
