My peeps in the know said the principal was brought in to be tough on behavior but he’s gotten a little to tough as he just hands out suspensions (in school and out of) like they’re candy. Out of school suspensions hurt kids academics and from what I hear about the vast majority of reasons, many seem like they should just be given simple detention, but maybe that’s what was being done in the past to no avail? Was this current principal at Bellevue before this? I don’t know why I would know that just think I’ve heard that. Still not a good look if his wife is allegedly knocking the community on a message board. If Highlands would’ve won Friday is this even a conversation?

Been a conversation for awhile.  I don’t think the athletic results worsen or help the situation.

If you work in the district, love and embrace the community, then it will love you back.  If not, well…

Listerman had a transcendent player named Vinson save his job. He was terrible and had a sub .500 record prior. We’ll see how he does going forward. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon. But, the basketball team still makes a lot of head scratching decisions most nights. Coach Flynn probably still would’ve won state with Vinson and that team.

It’s amazing to me how quickly we blame coaches for failures but refuse to acknowledge accomplishments.  Flynn’s last few years were a train wreck, the program was a mess, and I remember Listerman CHASING kids down in hallways to come to offseason work when he started.  He built a culture and DEVELOPED his program including Sam.  If he wasn’t there Vinson could have ended up at NCC or CovCath (see Ben Weyer).

Also, the list of “transcendent” KY basketball players to NOT win state is much longer than the ones who have, so don’t give me that.  Starting with one Reed Shephard who we all think will have a major role at UK this year.

Let's hold coaches accountable that should be and NOT discredit coaches who have success, my goodness….

  3. Ok….I’ll participate, put me in the extremely skeptical about the current staff to win at the level all us Cake Eaters want, but with that said…

    1.  Give the man and staff one full class, freshman to senior, before saying he has to go.

    2.  If after 4 years, the program isn’t better than what you inherited, then you aren’t the guy.

Patience.  Baioni’s first few years were rough.  Patience brought multiple state runs and a perennial 9th region contender.

Patience.  Listerman’s first half decade were downright “not good”.  Patience brought a state title and a program that is one of the top 3-4 in the region.

Idk if Sphire is the answer, but let’s give the man a full class to see.

FWIW I'm not looking to lure anyone in to "bite" and say anything perceived in-house as airing laundry. I just read through a whole bunch of pages of a thread about the game, and then decided to follow that up reading the update thread and then the JV thread, and my takeaway was that, damn, those Birds fans are unnnnnnhappy.

Allow me to supply a few quotes.

"...I wasn't impressed with the way they were coached..."

"Why do we fix the things that aren't broken and don't fix things that are broken?"

"Seriously, Highlands has two plays in their play book."

"Poor coaching by the Birds in all aspects of the game."

"...You forgot poorly coached. Selfish football team."

"Highlands is getting what the administration has tolerated. The taunting and stupid penalties tonight are unacceptable. A perfect example of what's resulted in 6 or 7 years of substandard football."

"I don't have an issue with kids being emotional but the taunting isn't the Highlands that I remember..."

"I'm going with the poor or lack of offensive play calling for Highlands."

"They are much improved from the previous coaches' days but the cockiness and arrogance that was on display last night was cringe worthy."

"Year 3 of Sphire and company and the discipline issue has not been addressed, seemingly being encouraged to be undisciplined."

"Extremely disappointed. The lack of discipline is frustrating. You are HHS, be better than that."

"I will be interested to see how certain people spin this to be 'someone else's fault' rather than looking in the mirror."

"The personal fouls....how many years is this gonna be a thing?!? If the coaches accept it, the kids will do it."

"...the jawing, pointing, and self love has to stop. It's embarrassing."

"...[Hayden Sphire] has LOTS to learn before that [Hayden's hiring as HHS HFC] can even be considered. Both on and off the field...."

"Having watched many football games over the years, especially these two teams, I don't recall ever seeing Highlands being so undisciplined."

So yeah, I'm just asking some honest questions based on everything that I read.

Geesh…more research here than on my grad school thesis…. Kudos

Heard last night at the game from a parent with a son on the team, that the offensive coordinator for Highlands (the head coaches son), thinks he’s in line to be the head coach when his father retires. I found that laughable after watching him coach the offense. Zero chance that happens.

Yeah…..those situations always turn out well. 🙄

  6. Now that I’ve slept on it…

Congrats the the Blue Colonels, much deserved victory.   Stuck with the game plan and it paid off.  Kudos.

    My thoughts  from Ft Thomas…

    1.  Geisler was gashing CC early.  Seemed the Birds went away from that too early and didn’t go back to it til late.  If you can run it up the guy for 8+ yards every time, then I’m doing it until they stop it.

    2.  The personal fouls….how many years is this gonna be a thing?!? If the coaches accept it, the kids will do it.  Make an example of someone.  5+ personal fouls in a game is unacceptable and while it may not have cost them the game, it played a huge part.

    3.  I’ve said it before on here, Littmer has a BIG future..but it’s still a FUTURE, he should not be learning and getting “seasoned” in a game and spot like that. Not fair to him or everyone else on the team.  Get him reps in blowouts, etc… why THERE?!?

My 3rd grade reading teacher would tell me that the theme of all of these things is  “coaching”.

I’m sure this has all been said but I’m thinking it too….

I'd love to see Tayden sling it! It is a big ask for a sophomore but I agree that it is good to see the best 11 on the field at all times; even if that means playing guys both sides of the ball.

I watched the JV game last week vs Anderson, Tayden was one of the best players on the field at TE and LB.  Had probably 4-5 catches,  one sack and just missed 2 others, and then played about half the snaps at QB.  I'm not sure what his best position is but I really liked him at TE.  Great at sniffing out the open areas of the field and soft hands.  Kid is going to be REALLY good, just don't know if he is the de facto QB...

Benke, IMO, is the straw that stirs the drink; as he goes, the Birds go. There is a lot of QB talent behind him, especially in Litmer, but he needs some seasoning. I would expect both to see a lot of time AT THE SAME TIME. Hayden Sphire has a lot of talent to work with and I hope he makes it work.

In terms of Class, I hope to see him get some interest. Unfortunately, 6'1-6'2 WRs who have above average speed are commonplace today. I would argue that Carson may be better suited at the next level on defense. He does have some of the best hands I've seen at the high school level.

Littmer has a TON of physical talent and athleticism with a HUGE future at Highlands, but I think they would be doing this team a disservice to not give 90% of the QB snaps to Benke.  With how he played last year, and how he leads this team, he has to be the man.

It's the old "I heard that he heard that" scenario, but I've heard from numerous people who have said Griffin is already back at Anderson.

The folks I've heard from generally turn out to be accurate sources. So I'm assuming his stint playing high school hoops in Kentucky is, in fact, over.

The Newport season will be popcorn worthy.  SOMETHING entertaining will happen.  Could be anywhere from all of their players leaving to making a very deep state run.  But it will be fun to watch.

Yeah think that’s been a thing for a few months. He was on their bench during all the summer stuff. Loads of talent that are sophomores and younger for the Wildcats. No offense to anybody but I’m surprised so many of these parents are sacrificing the education part of this. It wasn’t to long ago Newport was being shutdown by the state.

Let’s be honest, these kids are going to Newport to play basketball, period, as is their right.  Just like all of the kids that end up in Park Hills.  It’s for basketball and that is their right as it should be.

I’d say a large percentage of transfers are athletic; not academic, religious, or logistical…. People leave schools like Highlands and Beechwood every year for other athletic opportunities. I find it funny that people claim otherwise.
