  1. There have been many comments and discussions on this thread and others talking about the best players etc. With the thread clear I want to acknowledge a certain player.

One young man was mentioned earlier but didn't get much steam. The last two days I've watched Jay Jackson (8th grader at Blessed Sacrament) put on a shooting bonanza. Yesterday he was 7/7 and today he was 5/6 all from three point range. I've watch Jay grow up since he was 6 or 7 years old playing baseball and I'm really proud of the young man and player he has become.

Fall of 2014 we were playing in the SWOH fall league and towards the end of the season he and his parents came to me asking if I could help find him a shooting coach. Up to that point Jay was a streaky 3 man. He was physical with a great left hand. But, his shooting was very inconsistent. I got him hooked up Brad Redford who is an assistant from Xavier University. Jay started working and working. He started working as hard as any kid I've ever coached. Over the years I've had very few that are as driven as Jay. He is the president of his 8th grade class and as good a young man you can find.

But, don't be fooled by the perception he is a three point shooter only. His game is that of a shooting four man that can handle the ball. He's willing to defend the biggest kid on the opposing team and his brain allows him to block shots and rebound against kids you wouldn't expect.

    Jay Jackson #31 Blessed Sacrament

I'm proud of you young man.

Totally agree!! I listed Jay as one of the best players in nky in the 2020 class but I was told in this thread he was a second teir player to the other players mentioned by abbplayer. U go Jay keep up the good work young man!!

  2. You do not have to believe it but my daughter was one of the few that caused the rule to be put into place. She was an 8th grader and made the varsity team but the Conner Middle

School Principal Linda Viox tried to prevent it from happening. In our meeting with her she said, "it is more important to win a 8th grade middle school championship, than to play varsity as an 8th grader." We went round and round with her and Superintendant Blavatt, but since there was no actual written policy that prevented her from moving up, they finally approved the move. The following year they came out with the current written policy.

    Well that's really sad then

  3. No, the rule was created so that the middle school principals could increase their chances for wining the middle school championship.

I'm sorry but I really don't believe that. The way parents r always whining about playing time or the coach is to hard on there kid bla bla bla. And now a days there's always a participation award so no one is left out. Most kids have no idea what it is to work and earn anything anymore but y should they they'll make up something to give out for them.

    U want work for it!!!

  4. Several is irrelevant if they're not from Conner. How long has this rule been in place?

Why do we even have this rule? What's the harm in moving a kid up who is good enough to play frosh or JV?

The rule is stupid period. All it does is hold back kids that excel in bb. There r several kids in the Boone Cty that could play frosh. But we can't hurt little jonnys feelings if he's a freshman and gets cut because an eighth grader toke his spot. So let's penalize the eighth grader for working his but off to get better!!

  5. One thing Boone County administration may want to look at is letting a middle school boy move up to freshman basketball. If the boy tries out and doesn't make it then he would need to sit out that year. This might help reduce the amount of boys trying out due to their parents thinking they are that good. I'm in favor of letting players who have the talent move up, it benefits them and the team. No one wants their son to get cut or lose playing time but in the end it is going to happen. My oldest is on the freshman team at Conner and Jared would have started on that team. I think the rule currently in place states that a middle school player must play JV or Varsity. Back in the day the freshman team was at the middle school in most if not all of Boone County schools, may be time to look at the rules and update them.

Anyway...looking forward to games starting tomorrow for middle school. Conner middle has Woodland @ home, Turkeyfoot and Holmes away this week.

Actually the rule states they must play significant minutes or start varsity!!!

  6. I had my first chance to see NKY 8th grade ball last night. I saw 4 high-quality teams - Beechwood/BSac/IHM/St Mary. Well-coached. Ran nice sets. Moved and shot well.

St Mary has a kid #44 who will kill you from the corner 3 . Lefty big kid.

#31 for BSac is really good and they've got an aggressive "big" in the middle.

Looks like Jefferson from BW can get to the rim whenever he chooses. Just didn't finish well last night. Strong kid.

Number 31 at Bsac is Jay Jackson he is a very solid player!!

  7. I thought we were blogging about the middle school basketball not about the potential of an 8th grader competing at varsity level. He is not the first nor will he be the last IF he does get any varsity. Regardless he will be a problem for the opposition at whatever level he plays.

Jefferson is in middle school as well as hicks that's y it was brought up and people were just stating there opinions on the subject of an eighth grader playing varsity. In no way am I doubting these kids talents and I don't think anyone else is

  8. Am I the only one who thinks people are putting too much on Jefferson from Beechwood? He is decent but I've never saw him is a kid that was heads and shoulders above other kids his age. Coaching against him I don't think his ceiling is that high. I hope people don't put too much pressure on him and in my opinion, if he plays higher than freshman level this year then Beechwood will be really thin at the upper levels. Just my opinion.

I'm gonna have to agree. Jefferson is a great player no way u can down his play but imo there r no eighth grade player in nky that can play at the varsity level and really compete, sure he'll do a couple cool things up there but he's no way fast and strong enough to play at that level

  9. Clearly a pro Shining Stars anti legend bias from both of you. I get it, one of you must have a kid that plays with them and the other is their coach. legends was not initially mentioned by anyone except you two. But, while we are on the topic did these TOP kids beat the legends when they played this year? I don't see that info in any of the threads. And of course you have "coached a lot of those kids in that list..." it seems your posts are filled with information about the kids you have coached - most of them past tense, as they have moved on, or you have tried to recruit over them to improve your own teams. That's fine. You said turnover is part of the deal with AAU teams. OK. But, be careful, when you try to continue recruiting over your current kids, people will see it as a pattern. And, some of them that play now, as mentioned by someone else in another thread, won't get as much playing time as they are used to, and they will be former players too. You should recruit some of these kids on the list if they will make your team better. Or, you can go farther south and hope to find the "next" superstar at the expense of one of your existing ones. Enough of that though.....

This thread is supposed to be about the top middle school teams & players, not which aau team that they play for. For that topic, i agree that some of them are good players, but they are not the TOP players. I didnt say that they couldn't "compete" I said they were not the TOP players. Ask the kids - if they were choosing teams themselves, they wouldn't pick most (exception Mayer/Roush) of these kids listed by letsgetit over the kids mentioned earlier in the thread. In terms of teams, I do think Ockerman should be better with the 2 kids that were mentioned but I believe that SV, while not having the TOP kids, does probably have one of the best teams. I am not sold on Highlands, Pius is always tough because Mayer can change the game on both ends, and a sleeper is the Beechwood team, but they won't get to play these other Big school teams.

letsgetit, if your kid was recruited by legends why said no. competition, coaching, schedule?

Great coaches great comp great schedule.

He is happy we're he's at I left it up to him.

  10. C'mon man - I know you want the pub for your own son & wish those guys would try to recruit him. Your list shows kids that are probably the best player on their own school teams but would not be considered "just as good" as the top players in nky except Mayer and the Rausch kid. diskin is also a possibility. Bieger is an interesting choice and was a pretty good player last time i saw him.

U clearly don't no what your talking about my son was recruited and was asked to play for the legends and he decided not to. So u see I really don't have to try and get the publicity for my son he's doing that just fine for himself
