  1. Semifinals:

    Anderson, Ohio beat Lexington Catholic

Lexington Henry Clay beat Fairfield, Ohio

    Finals:

    Anderson beat Henry Clay

There were 20 teams total. Here are a couple of observations from what the teams I saw:

For a 2A school, Owensboro Catholic looked really good. They lost in a close one to Lafayette (33-30) in 1st round after pool play. They have good size and some nice skill talent. I look for them to make some damage this year.

After 2 consecutive 6A finals, Lafayette is down this year. Henry Clay beat them on the quarterfinals. You better get them now though because their freshman class last year was the bomb! They crushed everyone they played and had almost 50 players on the team.

Frederick Douglas has a lot of speed and skilled receivers. Very fast and can catch the football. They are very small which might be a concern once contact starts. I have no clue what they have in the trenches, but getting players from 3 schools will help them be better than expected. We will have to wait for real football to see? FD lost to Fairfield Ohio in quarterfinals.

I was not able to see much of Tates Creek, Bryan Station, LCA, or Lexington Catholic as they were in the stadium or inside.

Henry Clay is going to surprise some people this year. For not being a passing team and only playing one 7 on 7 tournament this year, they got beat in the finals. They have 2 senior quarterbacks that can both play and manage the game. Their speed is ridiculous at skill position and on defense. O-line and D-line will be much improved over the past several years. If they can run the football (they could not last year) watch out for this team to be better than expected.

Tough to gauge from 7 v 7. Lafayette should still be the favorite in the city once they put the pads on. I actually think they will slowly drop off each year for the next few. The freshman class you mentioned is good but they have lost some players, don't really have a qb and they didn't dominate everyone. They lost twice to Scott Co. and beat Tates Creek in OT at home in a game that TC dominated without their freshman qb that played up.

I agree that Frederick Douglas will be better than most expect. As for Henry Clay....I'll believe it when I see it. Unless it's addition by subtraction. They have lost some good players from last years team that really wasn't good. They couldn't pass or run it. They have speed but so do all the city teams. I hope I am wrong about this because there are some really good kids and families over there that deserve better.

  2. It's going to be an interesting year for Lexington city football. I am hearing that Fredrick Douglas will have plenty of talent but not be very deep. They have several kids from Bryan Station, Henry Clay, at least 1 good one from LCA, and at least 1 from Texas. Bryan Station has had several significant departures to FD and a few to other city schools but will still have nice talent. Henry Clay has lost some players to FD and don't seem to be headed in a good direction. In fact, they don't seem to have any direction. Dunbar has been sub par and lost a lot to graduation. Tates Creek has been trending up and should continue that direction. The cupboards are by no means empty at Lafayette and they continue to be the hot destination for some of the cities best football players but I think the gap has closed on them some.

  3. They was good enough to make it to the state finals last year.

Yes they were and no one is disputing that. I think the point is that they will have to improve on defense this year if they are going to get any where near that far this year. They had some special offensive players last year that as far as I know aren't coming back for a 5th year. They should still be good but it's hard to replace players of the caliber they lost and not miss a beat. The 2 linebackers might be the "real deal" (1 is proven the other is not) but it's going to take more than that.

  4. Who will be the starting qb?

Whoever it is will have big shoes to fill. Walker Wood was/is such a special football player. The only other qb that played for them the last few years was Quentin Brown who was a wide receiver and a senior. With coaching changes and Wood gone I would expect a revamped offense. The defense has the players but really needs to step up. Last season they gave up a lot of production and relied on the offense to put up big numbers.

  5. My stance on that is that if the player would be eligible in all subsequent years ahead of them (i.e. if they're "just a freshman" but will still be eligible as a senior) then it is fair game to stress what grade they're in. That they're slightly older is going to be irrelevant because they'll still be playing when they're a senior. Therefore "just an 8th grader" means this guy is this good and has FOUR YEARS ahead of him still.

I agree with you but it should also be fair game for another person to add that they are a hold back if that is the case. I don't think it's always meant to detract from the player. Sometimes it is relevant and provides the full story, i.e. why is the player so much more developed, bigger, etc.

All this being said and back to the thread. Zion Harmon is a super talent and has proven that he deserves the recognition and accolades that he has received.

  6. In my opinion the reason people take issue with the hold backs is simply in response to a post or comment that highlights "the only 8th grader" or he's just a freshman, etc. It is pointed out and/or stressed to make a point of how much more impressive the feat or accomplishment is because the person is so young. Then when someone responds by pointing out that they are a bit older than most of the kids in their grade and it is deemed trying to knock or attack the player. Maybe it is intended that way maybe it's not but at that point the debate is on. This a polarizing topic and debates are going to happen like it or not.

  7. I know your kid's a superstar, but,,,,,,,

Gawd this diatribe is tired. Look, your kids got housed by an 8th grader. If it really makes you feel that much better, your kid got housed by a "could be frosh". :angrybird3:

What is this? Is it directed at someone specific? Is there some on going diatribe (forceful or bitter verbal attack against someone) that I missed....or did someone have an opinion that differs from yours and that's not permitted on this forum?

  8. Why do people try to make a big deal about kids age. You all do realize that about half the students graduate high school at age 19 or with 3 months of turning 19. He might be 6 months older than the average age of all graduates in the 2021 class. Just enjoy his and every other kids abilities and quit trying to take away from their excellence.

This is plain and simple not true and inaccurate.

  9. I know you mentioned that he was not playing ball at USC, but a certain sniper, former walk on, comes to mind in Cameron Mills. Is it just not an option for Jake to do this, or is his focus just simply no longer on basketball? I'm going to say this also, I bet he could take Johnny David and Cal' s boy 1 on 1 and they are walking on..

He had some options to play but ultimately decided that he was just ready to move on with life and see what else is out there for him. He loves the game and thoroughly enjoyed high school basketball but as he put it, "it's something I do not who I am".

  10. Jake Ohmer was close

    52.7% FG

    41.6% 3FG

    86.0% FT

Just for fun the numbers comparison when they (Duby and Omher) played common opponents (6) looks like the following:

    Omher - 24.29 ppg, 46% fg, 44% 3 pt., 95% ft

    Duby - 25.33 ppg, 51% fg, 55% 3 pt., 78% ft

Pretty decent numbers for both young men. I had the privilege of watching Omher play a few games and came away very impressed. As for Duby, I never missed a high school game of his and wether they won or lost, I enjoyed every minute of each one.

  11. I can't imagine there are many others, if any. Not many high school players are going to hit 90% of their free throws, much less doing it while also shooting 50% from the field and 40% on 3's.

By the way, I have been a Jake Duby fan for years. My son, also a senior this year, played Sayre annually and I always was impressed with Jake and his game. Does he know what he is going to do next year?

He is going to USC. Not playing basketball.

  12. How many Kentucky high school players out there have hit this mark for the season? 50% or greater fg, 40% or greater 3 pt, 90% or greater ft.

For the 11th Region I believe Jake Duby/Sayre School was the only one (52.8% fg, 44% 3pt, 91% ft). Full disclosure; he is my son and he set that as an individual goal for the season. While discussing it recently we were wondering how many others across the state have reached those numbers.
