  1. The Breds had the inside and outside game running on all cylinders tonight at Dayton HS in the 1st round of the 9th Region All "A" Tourney. Sr. Brennen Devoto gets his 2nd start of the year in place of the injured Nick Seibert. It was all Michael Bueter, Jake Schulte, & Drew McDonald. Have to give it up to Villa, this group played hard the entire game and they have very nice players for a "small" school. Unfortunately the Breds size was too much. Another nice game from Devoto and Dupont. They are starting to get more valuable minutes that well prepare them for the post season, and Ben Weyer with another solid job. Vonhandorf for Villa held to under 10.

1st Q it was all Michael Bueter from the outside (3 treys) and Schulte and McDonald inside. Bueter 15, Schulte 6, McDonald 2. NewCath 23-12

2nd Q opens up with an alley-oop dunk by Schulte and the Breds increase the led. Bueter 21, Schulte 8, McDonald 8, Pangallo 5. NewCath 42-24

    3rd Q just more of the same. Bueter 27, Schulte 14, McDonald 12, Pangallo 5, Dupont 3, Weyer 2. NewCath 63-32

4th Q was all JV and many hit the scoring column. Final points for the Breds: Bueter 27, Schulte 14, McDonald 12, Weyer 7, Pangallo 5, Dupont 5, Haas 3, Gray 2 Rawe 2, Verkamp 2.

The Breds will play the host team, Bellevue on Wed. at 6:00.

    Newport Catholic 23-19-21-16 79

    Villa Madonna......12-12-08-07 39

Thanks as always for the recap.

  2. Neither HC or Brossart played their best game last night that is for sure. Anyone that was at the game should agree on that. From talking with Mustang after game that was the worst shooting night Brossart has had all year from 2 and 3 pt...Some open shots were missed for sure (I know Uebel missed a few open 3s in the 2nd half especially that I'm sure he usually makes) but I do think that you need to credit the defensive pressure with that as well. Brossart is a very good team who had a bad night shooting. Other than the 2nd half of the NCC game, HC has proved that they can play with the top teams on any given night. I don't think HC has played a complete game yet this year. Can't wait for the All A Classic next week at Bellevue.

Not positive but I think the All A regional is at Dayton

  3. I guess we watch a different HC v NCC game. Drew never got the chance to guard Campbell because every time down the floor he was doubled immediatly. No one in that game every stuck him one on one.

    Game,

I also was at the NCC - HC game and can't figure out what you were watching. Campbell was doubled a lot ot the game, but that was mostly when McDonald was not in the game. His best defense was before Campbell received the ball. Drew's positioning was very good preventing the entry pass at all. Also HC's first two times down the court in the 2nd half Campbell took it to rim against McDonald and was turned away both times. Additionally only 3 of Cambell's 8 points were scored when McDonald was in the game. I'M JUST TRYING TO KEEP IT REAL!

  4. The guards they have are fantastic defenders, that being said, I think I heard the Mustang guards had ZERO turnovers against Newport? They have been very steady with the ball all year. While none of the 3 are typically big scorers. I know Uebel had 5 threes one night, Rieger has led the team in scoring one or two nights and Jake Jennings is a threat from outside or slashing to the hoop. Very impressed with the guard play so far. I know that the Brossart faithful know better than to look ahead. They know that thier district is one of the hardest to get out of. They will stay focused on the next game ahead and continue to work as hard as always.

good luck to the Mustangs. A very fun team to watch.

Couldn't agree more. I saw the Newport game and was extremely impressed with Trentman, Berns and the floor play of Rieger. At one stretch he had several rebounds, deflections, assists and steals. Very poised player.

  5. It will be interesting to see how NCC plays this game. Will they go right at HC's big guy or rely on their perimeter game. I would go right him. He will undoubtedly block some shots but you also have to show your big men you have confidence in them.

Depends on the defense. If HC plays zone and packs it in (which I doubt they will do), NCC will fire it up from the outside. If they go man, then NCC should get the ball inside. Campbell is tough, but he can't stop Schulte & Mcdonnald at the same time.

  6. Tonight up on the "Hill" the Breds take it the Juggs in convincing fashion, although it doesn't start out that way.

The 1st quarter was a little slow as both teams had difficulties puting the ball in the bucket. Both teams played excellent "D", but the height advantage of Jake Schulte and Ben Weyer helped the Breds take a 10-7 led after 1 period.

Schulte 4, Weyer, Bueter, & Pangallo 2 each for the Breds.

The second stanza was "The Micheal Bueter Show". The NewCath senior guard let the 3's rain down as he connected on 4 and scored a total of 19 in the frame. The Breds hold Lloyd to a lone 3 pointer in the 2nd quarter as they go up 30-10 at the half.

    Bueter 19, Schulte 4, Dupont 3, Pangallo & Weyer 2 each.

The 3rd quarter belonged to 6'8" JR. Jake Schulte as he could not be stopped down low and drops in 11. Bueter adds 4 more and made two beautiful alley oop passes to Schulte and Seibert. And the Breds are up 47-18 at this point.

    Bueter 23, Schulte 15, Dupont 3, Seibert, Pangallo,& Weyer 2 each.

The 4th quarter sees the JV squad take over with some nice play out of So. Jason Covington and 6'7" Jr. Josh Verkamp.

Final numbers for the Breds: Bueter 23, Schulte 15, Dupont & Covington 5, Verkamp, Seibert, Pangallo, Weyer, & Haas 2 each.

For those just wondering, Drew McDonald DID play, but Schulte had the hot hand tonight.

For Lloyd, Niko Carter is was their leading scorer, the young man is a "player", like the hustle on both ends of the floor.

    NewCath (7-0) 10-20-17-11 58

    Lloyd......(2-5) 07-03-08-10 28

The JV game was all NewCath, as the Breds take a 20-10 half advantage to the locker room. The 2nd half was all Breds and the Juggs could only muster a 3rd quarter 3 pointer for their only points of the half as the Breds win 40-13. The Breds were led by the hot shooting of Tyler Rawe.

Thanks as always for the recap. Do you know why the NCC box scores have not been in the paper for the lasr 3 games?

  7. I still believe NewCath needs to get all new coaches. I have known all the staff for many years and they are good men. I want to see someone who knows nothing of the NewCath program walk in the door see what size they have to work with then see what style of ball is played on the Hill. I guarantee it will be a lot different. Mark my words the Breds will lose a big game this season due to the old tradition of the Breds keeping the ball around the 3 point line. It happens year after year and is getting old fast!!

Joe, I think everyone agrees that the ball needs to go inside, but I was at the game against CAL and thought the Berds did the best job of the year getting the ball inside. For the first time that I can recall, Jake was demanding the ball and was very effective inside. To be fair, CAL was packing it in so much that it was not always practical to force the ball inside. This brings up another point. Michael B and Nick have got to stop thking themselves out of the game with silly fouls. When those two are on the bench and the defense sags inside, NCC is very limited on offense.

  8. Sometimes it is about matchups. Sometimes a player gets hot (Seibert) and the score gets lopsided. I wasn't there but I have to believe NewCath's big men were also a problem for Boone. Boone is going to have to play good ball and get the most out of everyone to break .500 this year.

New Cath has played 4 games. Ludlow and Boon both came out in a zone and Nick made them pay the price. Dixie and Cooper played primarily man and NCC worked it isside. NCC is very versital.

  9. Lets go bigger......Bank of Kentucky Center, the best game that floor would see to that date. If thats not available why not Regents Hall.

Years ago BBHS and Campbell Co started their crosstown game which has been a hugh success. ( I know, I was in the Brossart Boosters Club at the time) Why not start an annual Campbell Co Catholic Cup game complete with travleing trophy? Mel Webster is a teriffic organizer!

  10. Only if NCC would agree to play it there on an annual basis.

Mustang, I usually find your posts to be reasonable but this time it's pretty lame. I am a Brossart fan myself. CCMS is BBHS's home away from home anyway. It's about allowing many more fans to enjoy a great game, not to mention a larger gate and concessions. Brossart has finally gotten their program to a very respectable level, one that many people would like to follow, and they can't get in the gym.

  11. I was speaking with a BBHS supporter and he mentioned that the Feb 1 game with NCC was being played at Brossart this year. Although it's early, with both teams playing well, does it not make sence to try and play the game at the Campbell Co middle school? I admit that I have no idea what all this involves, however this move would accomodate 4 or 5 times the number of fans. Just wondering!!

  12. Mustangs can go 8, 9, or 10 deep if necessary. My "unofficial insight" thinks that both seniors, Ben Uebel and Justin Saunders will be out there, and one or both of the 6'6"s, Burns and Trentman will start. Erik Rieger and/or Jake Jennings will probably round out the Mustang starting five on any given night. Matchups and potential mis-match opportunities will probably dictate who is in the lineup at tip-off time. Expect Ted MacDonald and Austin Shannon to get some QPT spelling the two bigs should they get tired or into foul trouble, and Spencer Hackworth and Jon Zink, although young and primarily cast for JV roles wouldn't hurt us if Coach Code should choose to go that deep and give those two some varsity experience.

Mustang, can you help? Whenever I go to the BBHS athletic web site, I cannot figure out how to find the BB schedules for this comming year.

I don't know if I am doing someting wrong or they are just not posted.

What class is Erik Rieger in? I think he had an older brother that played, but I don't remember Erik.

  14. Mustang,

Would you mind giving your unofficial insight as to who mignt get the starting nod for BBHS as well

as the top men off the bench?

Rumors of the Mustangs' demise is greatly exaggerated.

Our JV/Varsity roster is 15 strong, with the parity of the talent pool much more even this year than last. Both juniors from last year are back as seniors, as are 7 juniors and 6 sophomores. We also have a full field of 12 freshmen competing on the freshmen team.

As you are well aware, this is a very strong junior class, and the two seniors are solid. Players coming off of freshmen teams make evaluations about their future in the program and there is always natural attrition in that area. Last year our roster contained an unrealistic 12 sophomores. This year that number has become a more realistic seven. Players who are going to be asked to practice/play for five months and don't see a lot of return for their investments make informed decisions about their futures.

Nate Verst is the only prime-time player who chose not to return. He had thoughts of not playing his sophomore season in order to concentrate on baseball, but gave it another go. I'm sure that with his being the winning pitcher, defeating Harrison County in the baseball regional finals, and then upsetting Louisville St. Xavier in the state tournament as a sophomore with a 12-0 record, that Nate is probably getting quite a few feelers and invites to baseball camps and showcases, and this is the direction that he has chosen to go. My gut feel is that if this team performs as expected, Nate will still miss the competion on the hardwood and the roar of the crowd. I will personally miss seeing him compete at basketball this season, but a man has to do what a man has to do.

I can't imagine there are too many programs out there that wouldn't be quite happy to be in our position

  15. I saw BBHS 3 or 4 times last year. I thought there was a Jennings and Verst comming back at guard. Will they be a factor? Also there seemed to be a real log jam with so many sophmores. How do you think that will work itself out?

Alex Trentman and Drew Burns will be a great tandem for Brossart. Ben Ubel, and Erik Rieger will do well at the guard positions. And of course, Justin Saunders is always solid. IMO, the key for Brossart will be their bench play. If they can get good, quality minutes from their bench, they have the potential to have a very good season. Of course, IMHO.
