  1. Don Miller has Taken a Western Hills Team from 1-10 to a constant force in their district. 2 years ago he lead WH to a 8-4 record (most in school history) and the schools first playoff win. That same year they lost in the second round of the playoffs to the defending state champs (3A) Central by 7 points. Coach Miller has had over 16 Players sign to play college ball in his 6 years. His teams consistently place high in numerous weight meets. He has turned a program that had no tradition into a program that is proud and growing. Coach Miller is a tireless worker who puts the kids and the program first. In addition to his time as a head coach, coach Miller has been the defensive coordinator at Woodford County and Paul Laurence Dunbar, where he was part of numerous District and Regional championship games. Mercer County would be Lucky to have someone Like Don Miller.

No disrespect intended and I hate to bust your bubble but there are many coaches that do those basic things everyday. You would have to ask what level of competition his teams are actually defeating? What would you say his signatue win has been to this point? Also, was that 1-10 team his or the guy he took over for? Good luck to coach in his pursuit of the job if he wants it.

  2. I think there is a small and vocal segment of supporters that want immediate results. The fact of the matter is/was that in 2008 we graduated like 30+ seniors. There aren't too many schools that graduate that many and keep going forward without taking a step back. We had the issue with Coach Weaver and then went with Mason. I know some of the Mercer people werent that enamoured with the program in 2009 & 2010 but there were things being put in place at that time that would have built the program (which is what everyone wants). The administration knew where the program was and the coaches at that time knew they would struggle in 2009 and thought they would improve a little in 2010 and then hit the 5+ win plateau in 2011. The fact was Mason resigns and then they hire Rains who stays for 1 season which is really bad for the program. I said it at the time that I thought Mason was doing better at building our program than a segment of the fan base realized. The numbers were going up in the weight room and then he handed it off to Rains who I believe if he had stayed longer we would have continued on the incline.

But now here we are and it is late in the game and where does Mercer turn?

I heard that former Bullitt East Coach Doug Preston is a possibility? Took them to the state championship and I believe had Western rolling as well. A very good inside source from Mercer told me this today.

  3. What is crazy about that statement is that it was the same adminstration (AD, Super) that picked Tony after they decided to go in a new direction once Griesser left. Would be nice if MC would decide which direction they are going to go. A LOT of people in the community are outraged with they way things are being handled over in Mt. Sterling.

Check out Heffington's background. He is a piece of work. He coached basketball and was terrible. He has been run off from several places. His ego is the size of a mountain. He was probably jealous of Tony's success.

  4. He was fired from teaching...which was just smoke because the Super did not like him and took advice by some in the community who did not as well. The problem is that he was not formally observed in the classroom this year to truly judge his teaching/ detention skills- he is teaching in the Alt. School. I believe he will move on to GRC or Dunbar but Bourbon will lose a civil suit on defamation of character because they made up lies to fire him because boosters and super have agendas.

So is he not teaching at Bourbon the rest of the year? That's not what I heard. Maybe I got it wrong.

  5. Heard some very interesting rumours that Johnny Poynter was seen at Dunbar doing some walk throughs. He would be a fine hire for them. He could bring stability back to a program that has tons of potential. He is also able to take doormat programs and make them a winner. If he was given a chance, showed respect and support,(something he did not get at Bourbon) he would be loyal and stay there and build a winner. With what he did at Trimble and Bourbon, he could turn them around in a couple of years. I guess we will see how this all shakes out.

On a more serious note. Are you saying he was interviewed or offered a job?

  6. Did they fire him from teaching or just coaching? In coaching, they can let you go at any time for any reason. There are not the laws that protect coaches like they protect teachers.

I have no dog in this fight. I am just curious on some things like others on here. But I was told by a good source that this firing has nothing to do with football. Just what I was told.

Who saw him? When? What is a walk through?

  8. From the conversations I have had with the FHS staff, Foley hasn't not talked to or been contacted by anyone associated with the Bourbon County program. By looking at their region it could be a good move, facilities are next to none and he has been on staff there.

It could be a decent situation except they will be going back up to 4A in a couple of years. In the district with Highlands, Cov. Cath etc. I don't think Mason or Frankfort have to face those kinds of situations in their district and region.

  9. Does anyone know what the school is willing to do to attract an experienced successful coach? If anything? Sometimes a light teaching schedule is a strong selling point. Let's face it. If the coach has to build up the program he will need time focus on football duties as much as possible. Any thoughts? BTW I have been hearing they have a very strong candidate from outside the area. I don't know names for sure. I am curious if they have tried to attract this person to look into the position and if so how?

  10. I interpreted the comment as how could you be a graduate assistant and not have graduated, in terms of not actually having his college undergrad degree, in anything. Nonetheless, congrats to Hoptown and their new coach. Just from the posts here and elsewhere it's obvious that people are a little shocked, to say the least about the hire, but just remember, every great head coach was a 1st time head coach at one point. Everybody has to get their start somehow.

Very good point. And very true.
