  1. Russell knocked off the pre-Harrodsburg merger Mercer Co. team at home in a close battle. What was interesting was the Mercer's best player couldn't go and both teams were old school 3 back offenses. Russell went on to win the championship. Mercer met them again the following year only to avenge that loss in the state championship game. They had a little more speed the following year but it was another war.

  2. In and around 2010 maybe. I drove up to Paintsville to watch a classic war between these two. Johnson Central looked to be in trouble but drove down late with a chance to win the game. They ran a play-action pass from around the 8 yard line that was wide open. The player I won't name dropped the pass that would have won the game. Highlands went on to win the State Championship. I was sick for J.C. I think Towles was the QB for Highlands that night.

  3. I also witnessed a phenomenal game between Bell County and Highlands at Log Mountain in either 2004 or 2005 in which Highlands was said to have one of the greatest defenses to ever take the field for them. Bell was up to the challenge and looked to have scored what could have been the winning touchdown late in the game only to have the ball come out as the runner crossed the goal line. It was very controversial. From my angle I thought Bell Co. scored. It was funny to see all the Rockastle people there pulling against Bell. That was another rivalry and I guess still is ongoing!

  4. To summarize what I said in an earlier post. The coaches that show up day in and out regardless of talent and work at it because they love the process and the kids are what I call coaches. Not a slight against any coach that is blessed with great talent. You got to have it to win the big games against the big boys. Many great coaches have the work ethic and the talent. But there are great ones that don't have the support and or talent that do nice work in their program. My hat is off to anyone that can coach in today's climate. To much I and not enough we in sports for me.

  5. This list may very well begin and end with Phillip Haywood of Belfry and Dudley Hilton formerly of Bell County.

Don't think there is a coach in the State that has been able to do more with less compared to those two.

Belfry has only had two kids (Tony Messer and David Jones) go on to a Division 1 School in the past 11 years... and even at that only one was a FBS school. Yet, Haywood has guided Belfry to 10 State Semi-Finals, 7 State Finals, and 3 State Championships over that stretch... all the while with a heavily declining economy He is the State's All-Time winningest coach despite a very old school offense and traditionally teams that lack speed and shear athletic talent.

The only coach who could make a claim was Dudley Hilton who saw similar results at bell County with a similar talent pool.

Dudley was able to do similar things at Bourbon County that he did at Bell Co. with average talent.

  6. Griffiths - Green Co.

    Mofield - Meade Co.

    McKee - Scott Co.

Larkey - Rock and Harlan Co.

Poynter - Trimble, Bourbon and Bellvue

    French - Mercer, Meade, Boyle

There are some coaches that just don't garner a lot of attention for whatever reason but do a great job day in and out regardless of the talent. Those are the guys that live and breath for it. Those are what I call real ball coaches.

  7. yep the OC position is a bit of a mystery and so are the rest of the assts he will want....

I think you will find that Jerry is more than capable of calling the offense. He might call both sides if necessary. He called the plays when he was at GC the last time. Hester was the DC with Perry to the brunt of the preparation. I hope we see the option back in play?

  8. Not just staff, but people close to the program MS, JK, KY, LV, CA. Also to answer a couple other questions. A school cannot win 15 regions, 10 semis and 7 state titles w/o both coaching and athletes. Anyone who would think otherwise is completely a fool. Danville won zero titles from 1963 to 1983 I think. Man those coaches must have been idiots (ha ha). Obviously tongue in cheek here, the grass is not always greener, and stereotyping is not always a truth when it comes to athletics or anything else. In 1988, I think the new Danville staff inherited 8 or 9 varsity kids from a state title team (4 who played) and yet the coach had 4sale signs in his yard most of the year (1 or 2 from a guy whose initials are above). 10 championship games and 1 year after, some are still acting a fool. Before you make accusations, you should walk in the shoes of the guy you are ridiculing (or so I have been told). Sometimes, things are not what you think. Coach Clevenger could probably attest to that at this time.

Sad but true. Those initials above ring a bell. Funny how some people really think they know what a coach does based on their observations. The real work is done when these jokers are not watching imo. When they are sitting at home reading the paper or gossiping.

  9. Ok...now that we all got the "Danville" out of our system, can we talk about any new updates on Garrard's coaching situation? This thread is giving me a headache...:banghead:

I'm getting conflicting info. One source says the job has been offered. The other says they are going the 30 day route and then form committees that will interview? Who knows. Sounds sketchy.
