  1. How many seniors wil SW/Franklin graduate this year? Tell me more about this FS running back. I knew Warren East had a good back as a sophomore.

    [/font]

Saul Brady. Started on defense as a freshman last season. Looked like a starter on offense at the end. Speed for days and physical. IMO the kid from WE doesn't have anything over him except he carried the ball about 20 times more per game last season. I suspect that will change for Brady.

  2. Poynter seems to know football, and has been successful in some "dog" jobs, but I just can't figure him out... The incessant moving, his choices of jobs, and his sometimes odd sideline demeanor, kinda leave me scratching my head, sometimes.

Just a different kind of dude, I guess.

    "odd sideline demeanor"

OK. So that got me curious. What would this be?

  3. Everyone is acting like we have Bill Parcells out there waiting. Our last 3 hires have been busts because none of them are here now and they all had prior coaching experience. We need stability and more important than experience is someone that will keep their word and stay here for a while. Every high school coach was a 1st year coach at some point in time. You don't think Dennis knows how to run a program when his dad ran a successful one for over 20 years and would help him if he gets a head coaching job.

  4. Nothing against anyone who has had their name mentioned on here but if they want to improve they need to hire a proven winner imo. If they go with just who happens to apply and who fits a certain teaching position then the odds go way down for getting the right coach. If Mercer wants to win they should contact the people they want. Then give them what they need. That might be the plan from what I am hearing.

  5. No answer could also mean, you will find out when the season begins....:thumb:

Yeh. I guess that's when all those transfers will be revealed. Seriously though I don't think South will need any transfers. They are senior loaded with very strong players. They have a dynamite QB and RB in their junior class. Good luck to them.

  6. I think last year's disappointing season could be a reason why more aren't mentioning them. I can't really blame someone for not thinking Collins is preseason top 10 based on last year, but there is a lot of talent there to have a great 2015 season.

I think you are correct. They will be very good.

  7. I admittedly don't know as much about teams around the State in 4A as I would like, but one thing I can say with certainty is that Franklin is not better than South Warren. Especially with more and more of their players transferring down the street to South Warrens team...

That's interesting. So how many have transferred? Are they good players?

  8. I had heard or read (guess I'm getting old) that some NKY schools added an extra week of dead period. 1. Is this true? 2. Could this be a way of keeping it fair? 3. Could we be looking at another week of dead period across the state ?

Some coaches do this anyway. Using common sense and having your finger on the 'pulse' of your kids/community are part of coaching that sometimes gets overlooked. If I am a good coach I don't need others requiring me to give time off. I should recognize the need for it. I guess some people don't see it that way. I hear that Belfry starts practice the last week of July. I don't know if that is a fact it is just what i am told by a friend that coaches over there. I don't know if they lift during the summer or not. Obviously if you are in the finals most years you get additional weeks of practice etc. so you can afford to start later because the amount of time added to your season. It is like what college coaches say they get out of the additional practices when they go to a bowl. But no everyone gets to do this all that often in high school. I do agree that it is a long season but that is the nature of the sport. Using good judgment will help your kids. That is what coaching is about anyway imo.

  9. I would like to see them eliminate June and July to give kids time to be kids.

    Eliminate the Bye week.

Eliminate First 2 rounds of the playoffs.

Start practice last week of July.

Allow teams to go into camp and work with other teams (7 on 7 - Teams able to scrimmage - O-line work)

I dont understand why everyone gets excited about 7 on 7. When what teams are trying to get done could get done in a week by allowing teams to camp together for the purpose of getting better.

I really don't think "everyone" gets excited about 7 on 7. But that option should be available to those coaches that want to do that. If it is well thought out and June is used properly a coach can work their installation in small increments to prepare for July and August. But to try to do this in a week would be to overwork the kids that are out of shape since they would be taking the whole summer off. I get the let the kids be kids idea that i read on here sometimes but kids are doing what now a days? Sitting inside on computers. Many of us do this way to much including myself. This is not a bash against your idea but I don't think waiting later and later will help get the kids ready and develop teams very well. Football does not have to be complicated but it is COMPLEX. To develop players correctly and safely practice time is needed even if it is not full tilt scrimmaging. Football has changed dramatically. It is time for Kentucky to recognize this imo. There is no perfect answer to the issues that is for sure. I read where another poster put on here that it is basically frustrating for football coaches to give their players time off and then see that many of them are hit up by other sports coaches to work out since football is not doing anything at that time. What needs to happen to make that work is not possible. AAU, travel baseball and those types of things can't be eliminated as far as I can tell. Personally I would rather work shorter practices and put more days in. I think the amount of time we have now is enough. But to keep cutting things out of football is a mistake in my humble opinion.

  10. In the end, the coaches on the advisory board let us all down. They allowed yet another terrible decision be pushed down our throats with out us knowing. It's sad when supposed "football" people make bad football decisions.

Who are these coaches? Just curious. What is their school setting? Just wondering how they are seeing things?

  11. I think any ills that have been made of the Principal are highly overstated. Since being there she has done an excellent job with the basketball hire and has brought in an Assistant Principal in Mr. Young who is a former Raider and college football player and a pro-athletics guy. The AD is top notch. It is what I would characterize as an excellent administration for a coach to work for.

Well that is good news for the next man they hire.

  12. The only person I know for sure that that has put in for it it is Trenton Fields forum QB at Woodford. He has also Coached under Mike Harmon for 4.5 years at Tates Creek. Was the assistant OC at Creek in 2011 and 12 and was the OC in 2013, averaging 350 total yards a game. Fields was recommended for the Tates Creek job by Harmon and ran the program for 5 weeks before administration chose Antonie Simms. He was the assistant OC at GRC this pasted season helping them to their first successful season in many years. Fields is dying for the job because he knows what the program can be.

I have not really heard of to many high schools having an "assistant OC". What does a guy do in that position? Assist the OC?

  13. So this is for all interested. Latest talk says Guy Morris has shown interest in this job. Another poster indicates many strong candidates are applying for W. East. I'm curious if they will have a big drop off for a couple of years or remain a contender in the 4A Western half of the state. They play in the district with South Warren, Warren Central, Franklin-Simpson and Allen County. I have been under the impression they lost a lot besides the freshman RB (who is really good) that was district player of the year last season. Anyone have further thoughts or details?

  14. I would not anticipate them being down much...they return the Reynolds kid who is probably the second best Fr. prospect in the state behind the kid from Manual. To give you an idea, Reynolds is the cousin of former East players Shenard Holton (UofL) and Eli Brown (UK) and was the District POY as a Freshman this season. They additionally have a solid stock of athletes...if anything, East may suffer a bit because of the strength of their District (South Warren, Warren Central, Franklin, Allen) but I would expect them to be a consistent top 15 team in 4A for the next three years with a chance to be special in 2016 and '17.

Interesting. I am going to start a new tread so I don't keep hijacking this one. Hit me up there on Warren East and their district.

  15. Who East will hire is a mystery to me these days. I do know they have a strong applicant pool.

Gotcha. I had a friend tell me a few days back that Morris is looking into it. Wonder if he is after Warren Central as well? The word is that East could be a bit down for a couple of years?

  16. If JP has plans to leave Garrard County that will hurt Garrard County way more than it will hurt JP. I'll also say that if JP is even considering leaving Garrard County then something went wrong somewhere really quickly. I think it was obvious that JP was doing good things at Garrard County immediately.

Anything less from JP would be surprising. He is one of the best. I don't know what he plans but I think Mercer should go after the right person and not wait to see who happens to apply. I know an old coach that answers the "let's throw it and have fun and be exciting" type statements with this: Winning is fun! Who cares how you do it. But winning is fun for all involved. I don't believe winning is the only thing that matters but it is more fun winning by running and playing superior defense than losing while throwing it around a bunch so everyone can go ooooh ahhhhhh as the ball flies through the air. But If you got a dandy that can throw and the skill that can catch and all the rest of the package then throw it around. Cautionary tale: Seattle last Sunday.

On another note. I don't know if I interpreted this correctly from PP92 but are you saying who ever the new coach is will be expected by the QB's dad to make him the guy no matter if the coach sees it different? If that were the case then there in lies a huge stumbling block for Mercer football. Can't be any hidden agendas. Now maybe this kid is and will be the best QB and that's ok. But, let the coach take care of the football decisions and support him. Period. Or stay on the roller coaster ride of a new coach every 2 years. Just my thoughts.

  17. If the Mercer admin. and fans are honest about their situation with themselves they will realize they need a proven winner that has head coaching experience. I think if they make a blunder with this hire their program could drop to a pretty low level. It is not all that strong at this time but Perry or Jaggers would immediately change that imo. I do understand that players win games but these two veteran coaches have been successful at the highest levels over a long period of time. Just my thoughts. I also believe each of these guys have close ties to the program with former players they coached already in the Mercer system. I could be off on that but I last heard there are some connections.
