  1. Fair enough, I am curious about Weyer though. He is a big kid for 7th grade but what is his potential for growing? Are there any kids in grades 6-8 who have potential to reach 6'4 or taller?

Can't comment on potential----. Connor Kunstek, 8th grade IHM, about 6'2" now.

  2. Watched the game in WISCONSIN with family, with every neice, nephew, cousin, aunt, uncle, sister, brother, armed in full BADGER gear. Great game, great time had by all. 83-year-old dad is a HUGE Badger fan. Who knows if I will ever get to watch WISCONSIN in the Rose Bowl with Dad again. Memories to last a lifetime. That's the stuff that life is made of.

  3. I would say this...a baseball fan and a football fan are two different animals. Comparing the fans of sports is like comparing human to beast.

Agreed---Two different kinds of fans when SOBER. Alchohol is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get. Some drunks are funny, some cry and say "I love you, man!" And many, many get rude, obonoxious and violent--regardless of the sport they attend.

  4. It's my experience that many of the "held backs" are held back from the get go. Or are you talking about when it happens once they start school?

IMO, "waiting a year to start kindergarten" and "holding them back" are kinda the same thing. "Repeating a grade" is completely another scenario. In the first one, your child really is not completley aware that they are being "held back". They get to spend another year at home, in pre-school, etc. No harm no foul.

For the "repeating a grade" scenario...It was indeed a very sad day when I told my son that he had to repeat second grade. "What's wrong with me?" "Why can't I go to third with my friends?", etc etc. We really had no choice becasue the battery of testing indicated to all that he needed to repeat. When asked his grade, his first comment is, "I should be in third". Psychologist even said that when they repeat a grade, it becomes part of their identity for the rest of their lives, they will always have that "stigma" that is difficult to shake. So--I can't imagine telling a kid that is doing fine in school that "Mommy and Daddy decided that you need to be bigger for sports, so you are going to repeat third, 4th, middle school school, etc." How does that work? "Sorry, you can't advance with your classmates, you are too little for sports".

IMO--if there is ever a doubt about placement in your mind, school readiness, child size, etc....have them wait a year BEFORE they start kindergarten, or "hold back a year", vs repeat a grade.

  5. The flip side of the this is those that intentionally "hold kids back" so they have an athletic advantage. Now I know very specifically of parents who have done this and I find it nauseating. First a kid starts late because they have a close birthday to 10/1 and Kentucky does not enforce you have to start if your birthday is in August so the kid is already older................then he gets held back a year in elementary so that he can be bigger and stronger and in some cases almost 2 years older than many of the kids in his class. That is just as bad as the I think my kid is advanced so i start my kid early. Both types ofd parents are detremental to their own kids.

I agree with your comments about having a child "repeat a grade" so that they will be bigger for sports, especially if they are already older in their grade. One of mine has that late Sept bday, was not ready, and we waited. Then in second grade, he was told he had to repeat--due to learning issues. So yeah--he is older, and in some cases almost 2 yrs older than classmates---will turn 19 in Sept. of Senior yr. Also will add that he pretty much has no interest in sports right now. So for sure, many of those "older kids" "hold back" scenarios is based on sports, but there are those kids that struggled, and parents had to make some difficult decisions.

  6. I am not suprised at the Indiana eligibilty, and here is why. (Not trying to defend anything here--just stating some facts.) I have a kid born in Indiana, on June 30th, 1994. When she started kindergarten in Indiana, the kindergarten cut-off date was JUNE 1st--so she missed the cut-off, and started kindergarten at age 6. Eventually moved to KY, and she is of course quite "old" for her grade. She will turn 19 on June 30th, a month after graduation. Now--if she ever had to repeat a grade for some reason, she would be even "older", starting senior year already 19 years old, and turn 20 the month after graduation.

Since then Indiana moved the cut-off, and I am pretty sure that the current cut-off date for the Indiana is now August 1st. But that date did not happen until 2002. So basicly, the high school kids in Indiana right now will tend to be older...as the summer birthday kids had to wait a year to start kindergarten. And if those "older" summer birthday kids ever repeated a grade---they would be turning 20 right around graduation time.

Again--just stating the facts. I firmly beleive that all 50 states should implement a "National Cut-off standard". I like September 1st, or even August 15th, so all kids start school at age 5. I personally think that Kentucky's Oct. 1st cut-off is late.

  7. Holmes 8th grade beat Ockerman by 2 in the closing seconds. This is the Ockeman team that is without Stanley, probably the best player in NKY. Great game, OMS had a 3 rim out at the buzzer. OMS 7th grade won easily, not sure by how many.

Why was it the Ockerman without B.Stanley? Sure hope he is not injured?

  8. IMO the academic programs at the schools being considered are on equal footing. This area has some great academic programs to choose from, he will get a fine education at any of these schools. That said, the next consideration is basketball, because that is his passion---period. The comment about how Varsity Cru may be next year is not becasue I think my boy will jump to that level as a freshman. It's my way of looking ahead at things because IMO the more successful the varsity team is, the more St Henry gets noticed by other potential talented middle school players also making some big decsions.

  9. I am not a smoker, and I do really hate to be around it. I carefully choose where I go to avoid the smoke. But if the smoking is no longer allowed in BARS, then I forsee large groups of smokers hanging out in the bar parking lots, taking their smoke breaks. Can't say that I like that---esp. if these people have had some drinks and are loud. And if they are not allowed to smoke in the parking lot (which is still the bar owners property, right?), then does the bartender need to chase the outside smokers away, while still trying to take care of customers and keep the peace inside? And if the bar owner now has to call the cops because the outside smokers won't leave their parking lot, I sure hope that is last on the priority list for the cop (after drunk drivers, burglaries, assault, etc) who is really trying to protect us!

I apologize for my ignorance, I guess I need to look up the ban to see all the parameters.

  10. I was hoping that Jane would win it all, but I knew last night when Fabio won immunity, that they would get rid of Jane. I don't understand Chase's fascination with Sash. I don't get that. I thought the alliance was with Chase, Holly and Jane. I hope Fabio wins it all, but its not going to be easy for him. And Dan, well, he has done absolutely nothing at all. IMO, he does not even deserve to still be in Survivor.

I also hope Fabio wins. I think that Dan and Fabio were stupid for not trying to get rid of Holly. I like Holly, and I don't necessarily want her off the show, but if I were Fabio and Dan, and wanted to stay in the game, I would have gone that route. Now Chase--he is just an idiot. He has made poor decsion after poor decsion. But he's also the guy that is porbably going to win it all! Dan---let's just call him "Mr. Coat-tails"! Sash--not quite sure except that he seems to have some strange power over the rest. They should have gotten rid of Sash a long time ago!

I have always enjoyed Survivor. I'm glad that the series still provides plenty of entertainment!!

  11. Last night Newport at IHM. I don't have the scores, but Newport 7th beat IHM, and IHM 8th beat Newport 8th. Neither games were very close.

Also "heard" that IHM 7th girls played AT Newport. IHM won by 2. It got ugly at the end, and cops were called to escort out he IHM girls/coaches/parents. Pretty sure that IHM 8th girls played after and won.
