MOUNT STERLING — Forget that Montgomery County is one of three undefeated boys' basketball teams in Kentucky.

The Indians, ranked ninth in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, are keeping a modest profile, even after dispatching archrival Clark County 54-44 on Friday night.

Darius Jones led Montgomery with 16 points and six rebounds. Xavier Piersawl added 15 points, while Bryan Wallace had 12 points and six boards.

Clark County's downfall was its scoring ability. The Cardinals shot 30 percent (15-for-50), while Montgomery poured in 54.8 percent (23-for-42).

Rebounding, they're better than us at all five positions. They're long, they're athletic, they're physical. We've had the most physical practices you can have by hitting each other for three days. I think they outrebounded us by two. And then we talked about poise and composure, playing through the environment, playing the next play. I thought we did all three of those. They just happened to score more than us. ... We have miles to go on the offensive end. We just simply struggle to score."

What good teams have Montgomery Co played--high rated teams?

  2. Whenever I think of that team, I recall a story that a guy who lives outside of the 10th region told me. He said during Lofton's junior year, he had heard all the "fuss" about how good that team was. So he decided to go watch them play. He said that he got there during warmup and thought to himself, what is all the fuss about. Mainly referring to their lack of being physically imposing.

But as he recalled, "when the ball went in the air", he quickly understood, what the "fuss" was about.

That team was fun to watch.

  3. Of the other names that have been listed, here's how often I saw them:

Corey Pelle (never saw him play)

    Keaton Belcher (I think twice)

    Kevin Reinhardt (Twice)

Evan McDole (never saw him play)

    Justin Seiter (maybe once)

Troy Cooper (never saw him play)

Robbie Stenzel (I think twice & maybe a third)

    Trevor Setty (lots)

    Brent Bach (lots)

    Kellen Smith (twice)

    Vinny Zollo (same as Stenzel)

I think you need to see a guy more than a couple of times to get a feel for how good he really is. But of those that I did see two times, I was/have been most impressed with Belcher, Reinhardt, Stenzel, & Bach.

I think your jugement on these players goes along with my thinking. I'm like you ,I never once saw Pelle or Mcdole play but the others numberous times.

  4. Lot of very good players in the 10th during this time frame and really tough to pick a top 10-15 and when you narrow it down to 7 it gets downright crazy. I just can't include Bach in a top 7 over some of the other players mentioned due to the level of competition faced night in and night out.

My opinion of Bach is that he is a solid D2 player and much like my thoughts on Nick Ruthsatz of CovCath before he committed to Findlay I thought D1 could happen but it would have to be a perfect fit system wise and still might be a stretch.

To include Bach in a top 7 you have to leave out Robby Stenzel who had a great career at GRC! Not to beat a dead horse but accomplished this against a much tougher schedule.

Speaking of Zollo where is he playing basketball now? I thought he left WKU and went to Furman but I did not see him listed on Furman's roster?

If I'm not mistaken, Robbie Stenzel was Clark Co's all time leading scorer scoring over 2200 points and his last 2 years didn't average 10 shots per game. Also, Clark Co played a very tough schedule. That makes a big difference.

  5. The Herald and Courier both have ratings but they usually don't come out until the first week of January. The AP also produces a weekly poll that starts around the same time. Of course BGP also produces a weekly Top 20, which many would say is the best in the business!

I always liked BGP the best.

  6. It's still early & I've seen everyone in the top six except Brossart, but this is my thinking also. I think Montgomery County is clearly out in front in the 10th. From what I have seen, the three teams behind them have a legitimate shot at winning it, but it will take a strong effort.

I think Mason Co is better than Brossart and by the end of the season may be the best in the tenth.

  7. I think Montgomery will be the best in the region. You can build around a player like Prewitt. If I would have been coaching Montgomery last season in the regional tourney ,he would have been taking those shots at the end in the Mason Co game. I look for Scott and Campbell Co being in there. I don't look for much out of the rest. Even with transfers, you have to wonder why did they transfer and in some cases those kids don't help much.
