  1. Thank God my son is a senior and will be done with high school sports after this year. Reading what some players, coaches, schools will do to win is extremely sad. I have been proud of my son over the last four years. Although not perfect in any way, he has played with great competitiveness as well as, compassion for his opponent. I have witnessed him stop playing to help an opponent up, or to pat them on the back after a good play on their part. That's what high school sports should be all about. If playing dirty, trash talking, and intentionally hurting others is where sports are headed, I for one, am not interested.

  2. Now that we are into our last week of the season, who is your NKY top 5.........

Mine would be different if you had asked me one or two weeks ago........

So, based on injuries I know, teams I've seen and scores I've researched:

    1. Boone

    2. NCC

    3. CCH (although they seem to play to the level of their opponent)

    4. St Henry

    5. Highlands/ Bishop Brosart (some could argue that Scott with Treadway could compete, but I'm a fan of the relying on the ref to call penalties...especially when NKY teams go down state with those refs.)

However....1-5 are only slightly separated and in my mind, there is no real favorite this year...

    Agree or disagree?

I would agree with your listing. I would add that any of these teams can beat the other on any given night. I'm not so certain that Boone is slightly above the rest. It really just comes down to who shows up to play. As is always the case, the team that wants it more will usually come out on top. It should be fun. I hate to see it come to an end.

  3. Certainly saw a team that was on a high playing against a team that has not played a game in 10 days. Do not understand how you play so well in Lexington against top competition and then do not play for 10 days. On top of that, you do not practice since Wednesday because of the Merchants and Music Festival. Very lethargic start to the game and NCC certainly took it to the Birds early on. However NCC was on their heals for much of the second half, but the Birds could not capitalize on many chances. Hard to believe fact, they still have not won a game since that new turf was put down before last season.

I'm guessing you mean that they have not won a home game since the new turf has been put down? If so, I would not have guessed that.

  4. Brossart is OK.......just like the other top 4 or 5 teams in N. Ky. No great teams in the area this year I don't think. I would say that Brossart has played a pretty weak schedule compared to someone like Boone Co., CCH or Ryle. They have beaten NCC and Boone so obviously they are pretty good but I don't think you can anoint any team in N. Ky. a clear #1.

I would agree with you. Top 4 or 5 teams are fairly equal.

  5. They also lost to Scott 1-0 I think. That takes them down a notch given the pounding that Scott has taken at the hands of some other teams but maybe Scott didn't have injuries to two of their only quality players at the time.

You can make the argument for other teams like CCH who has beaten NCC and Highlands recently.........but tied a terrible Connor team. There is no clear #1 in my opinion.

    No love for the Stangs?

  6. Garbig and Davis-Roberts from Highlands are both good players, a couple of the best in the region. Evan O'Hara........also top notch.

Have not seen everyone play but seriously, that's about it in N. Ky. There are some good younger players on several teams but those three are probably the best three in the area.

Without being critical of those three players you have mentioned (because I have not seen them play), what makes them top notch? Foot skills? Size? Speed? Agility? I can't say that I am the best judge of talent because I don't feel that I understand the game well enough to say who the better players are in this area, but I have watched plenty of games and I feel that I have seen a number of players that are very good. College good? Maybe not, but still good players and fun to watch.

  7. Boone Co. takes the early lead 1-0 but Brossart comes right back to tie. Boone again takes the lead 2-1 and Brossart evens the score. After Brossart scores in the 2nd half to take a 3-2 lead, Boone fires one in to even it yet again. Brossart scores with less than a minute left to get the win. Jacob Jennings scores a hat trick for Brossart. Hopefully a Boone parent can add more detail from the Boone side.

  8. An excellent game between two very good teams. Bishop Brossart and Newport Central Catholic faced off tonight for the All A Sectional. John Murrin scored first for NCC in the 1st half. Dylan Geiman ties the game with a goal early in the 2nd half. The teams battled back and forth until with 3 minutes left, Jake Jennings squeezes one in for the go ahead goal. Fianl score BBHS 2 NCC 1. BBHS advances to play at Elizabethtown on September 28.

  9. Newport Central Catholic, the Boys and Girls 9th Region "A" Soccer Champs will take on Brossart, the boys and girls 10th Region "A" Soccer Champs, in one game State Sectionals this week. The winners will advance to the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament on the weekend of September 28th/29th at the Elizabethtown Sports Park.

The Boys' sectional is to be played this Tuesday at 5:45pm at Pendery Park.

The Girls' sectional is to be played this Wednesday at 6pm at Pendery Park.

Admission is $6 for adults, and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The boys winner will take on the 13th/14th Sectional Champs at 3pm on Saturday, September 28th.

The girls winner will take on the 15th/16th Sectional Champs at 9am on Saturday, September 28th.

From what I have been told, the Boys Sectional will be played at Morscher Field instead of Pendery.

  10. Watching the Brossart Scott game tonight made me wonder. Who, in your opinion, is the best defender in NKY and why? What types of things does this defender do that makes him the best in the area. It doesn't matter to me where the NKY line is drawn; Pendleton, Walton, Bracken, wherever.

  11. Bishop Brossart has some very smart defensive players. They may not always be the most skilled players, but they get the job done. Brossart's sweeper, Josh Keuper does a nice job of keeping the ball out of the box. He always seems to pick the right time to challenge an incoming striker to knock away the ball. He would have to be my pick for Brossart's key defensive player.

  12. I was actually looking more for something like "Boyd Cty is worse than Holy Cross"....or a comparison to a closer NKY team........

This will help with your rules understanding.

I watched this. Very funny. Boyd and Holy Cross were about the same. Bourbon was a little better than both and Harrison was probably the best of the four teams we played. Thanks for the video. I feel like better about my knowledge of the game.

  13. Glad to see Eli back......

CJ....for those of us that are not familiar with some of the teams outside of our 15 mile comfort zone......and certainly not meaning to take anything away from the Mustangs 4-0 start.....

....could you give a quick description of the skill level of Bourbon, Harrison and Boyd.......I know Holy Cross and do see that thier only win is Bourbon Cty, so that helps me with that one.

....just trying to get a comparison level, if you know what I mean.

.....again....4-0 with 21 goals for and only 2 allowed is impressive....

    Congrats on the nice start.

I'm not sure that I am qualified to give an accurate description of the quality of the teams we have played. I did not know what soccer was until the birth of my son. I enjoy watching my son play...any sport, and I have learned what I could over the years. I have learned a lot about soccer and continue to develop my understanding each week. I still struggle with off sides calls and why fouls are called, or sometimes not called. I will however, give it a shot. I think that Boyd was probably the least skilled defensive team that we have played thus far. Bourbon Co. played a rough, physical game and had at least one good forward. Harrison Co. had decent skills but, lacked experience due to their youth. We play Scott Co. tonight. I will let you know how that goes.
