  1. CAL and Desales are both very capable of winning this game.. Desales D is so good that even when their O sputters, they'll still be in the game with a chance to win it and to be honest, I'm not sure CALs D isn't about as good.. Outside of the Central and S.Kenton games, CALs not given much up. I give the O advantage to CAL, as well, with the kicking game in Desales favor.. The CAL secondary is also very underrated.. They have length, quickness and instincts back there and break up a lot of passes..

  2. I bleed red and black and will be pulling for the Cards to come out of this one, but, I also know it'll be very tough and they'll have to play a solid game to come out on top. From a sheer talent standpoint, I'd call these 2 pretty even.. I would give Mayfield the advantage in the team speed dept., at running back w/Bright, Caldwell, Tyler, at LB and in the kicking game.. I'd give OBC the advantage at QB, the DL and the overall passing game.. That's not to say I think they have better WRs because both teams have 3 or 4 good ones, just think OBC utilizes theirs a little better thru out the course of a game..

  3. That's a good way to look at it. You can also look at it this way as well. OHS didn't play or bring 2 key starters and Graves came out and had a good game plan. Look at what OHS did to Greenwood who throttled Graves. OHS had 5 turnovers against BG and lost 17-14 at BG. And we all saw what BG did to McCracken.... so that theory can go in both ways. Not saying Owensboro Catholic is good enough to play or beat the BG or McCracken's of the world. Just playing Devil's advocate on that. Thanks @GloryDays for the suggestions!

That's exactly why I said it can be spinned in a number of ways depending on which side of the fence you're sitting on, but, the bottom-line, the team that executes the best will likely win..

  4. Well, I don't think LHC can keep up with the speed of Beechwood, but, what they typically do have is a big strong OL and a couple of hard nosed RBs that run behind them.. This will probably be the best OL the Tigers have faced since Cov Cath.. Plus, LHC always plays a tough schedule to get them prepared and no exception this year with Desales, OB Catholic, Western on their non district slate.. The D will struggle with Beechwoods mix of pass and run, but, if they can control the OL and move the chains, they can keep the game closer than most expect..

  5. A lot of folks are looking at that close loss to Owensboro as a game that proved just how good they are.. While, imo, thats a good loss if their ever was one, let's also not forget that O'Boro had to hang on for dear life 20-19 against a Graves Co team that Mayfield beat by 32 points and held to under 100 yards on the night.. So, while the Murray game may look to favor the Aces, the schedules can be looked at a number of ways to spin it however you want them to be spinned.. The bottom-line is these 2 teams both propose challenges for the other and the one that executes the best will likely win, barring something strange happening..

  6. OC only has 1 kid going both ways. They could if they wanted to have 0, but Coach Edge uses his best during the playoffs. IF they have nobody going both ways for a long period of time in the game, then watch out. I was told Mayfield has about 5-6 players going both ways. Is this true? IF so, it could make a difference cause Murray got tired.

Mayfield only has 2 or 3 that start both ways, but, they do have 2 or 3 other kids that play some on both sides.. They haven't shown fatique since early in the year when it was still in the 90's and the humidity was way up there and even then, they weren't or at least didn't look at fatiqued as the other team..

  7. The Top of the mountain in 1a and 2a are 2 totally different animals.. The Cards have a lot to prove to be 2a's Top Dawgs and this week's game is where it starts..

They could very well be the underdogs from here out.. They have the talent to win it all and may very well do so, but, at the same time, they could play well and still lose in any of the next 3 games.. That's the difference in 1a and 2a.. In 1a, if they played well, their was very little chance they'd lose..

  8. Unfortunately Cardinals44, the Male vs Trinity game will suck up all of the oxygen in the room from a media perspective. I am unaware of any media outlets that will be carrying the game.

Crap, that's ashame.. I mean, I understand the interest in the Trinity/Male game, but, geez, this game is big, as well and deserves some coverage.. I know, I'd listen or watch given the opportunity.. 2 great small schools in the biggest urban area should draw a radio station somewhere..

As far as the game goes, I like Desales in the rematch.. The later the season goes and the colder and nastier the weather gets, the more it favors the running team and the team with superior size, plus, they've turned the table on CAL for 3 years in a row, so, they obviously know how to make the necc. adjustments.. DS 21 CAL 7

  9. I haven't seen either team, but I admit I was shocked when I read the thread of the OC/Murray game. Sounds like they totally dismantled the Tigers. For the Mayfield fans, would you consider this your toughest game of the season to this point other than McCracken?

I would say yes.. Not sure if OB Cath. has the overal talent or depth of a Tilghman, Graves or Corbin, but, I think they'll be a tougher matchup because of their ability to throw the ball.. Teams that primarily run the ball hasn't had a lot of luck vs the Cardinals, but, teams that could mix it up like McCracken gave them fits.. OBC certainly has the ability to throw it around.. For Mayfield to win this game, the secondary will need to play well and the DL will need to keep pressure on the QB.. If the QB is allowed to sit back in the pocket, he'll pick them apart. I will say the same for OBC though.. They'll need to get pressure on Arnett or he'll pick them apart, as well..

  10. I for see the Red Tigers getting to make their first ever visit to BG. I just don't think Russ is as good as recent Russ teams

I don't think they are either, but, I do know that Coach Myers is great when he has time to prepare and due to the weak region he's in, he can place extra emphasis on preparing for the Tigers and still skate thru to the semi's, plus, I like them at home in big games and I think they match up better athletically than they have with Mayfield the past few years.

  11. I am with ATL. Look at the Murray and Franklin Simpson games and that is what you will see with Beechwood. Beechwood would be favored over either of those two and they both won handily over Russellville.

My other comment is UK fball fan mentioned in his original post that Pikeville's offense would be too much for Russellville. I think Beechwood's offense is better than Pikeville's.

I've seen Beechwood a couple of times this year and nothing I've seen from them would make me think they'd be a favorite over Murray.. Murray's line would do to them what CCs did and they'd push their D-line all over the field and control the clock and keep Beechwoods offense off the field. Plus, their skilled players are faster and more athletic than Beechwoods.. Murray's secondary is also very good against the pass. In saying that, Murray has had a couple of poor performances, so, if the team that showed up vs Graves and Tilghman showed up, the Beechies would take them, but, if the team that played Mayfield & Russellville showed up, they'd roll by 2 or 3 scores.

    F. Simpson would likely be the more talented team on the field vs Beechwood, as well. I know they got out of the gate poorly this year, but, they're playing solid fb right now..

  12. In 2a, I wouldn't call OB Catholic a sleeper.. They've been anywhere from 3-6 all year long and I personally don't think there's much difference in them and the other top contenders.. I would probably consider Murray a sleeper. They're a team who could knock anyone off on a given night and get hot down the stretch, although I do feel it'd be an upset win from here on out.

There are a lot of really good teams in 6a, but, I don't see any capable of knocking off Male or Trinity, especially outside the Top 5..

In 5a, I could see a team like N.Laurel getting on a role and while they've been in the 5-7 range all year, I do think if they managed to get past Southwestern and Pulaski, it'd surprise most people, so, I would consider them a good sleeper team..

In 4a, Hopkinsville would be my choice.. they're capable of beating anyone in 4a, including S.Warren because they can score and have a good D line to stuff a running team like SW.. if they get by them, I think they'd be 50-50 against whoever came out of the east..

Hard to call E'Town a sleeper since they're undefeated, but, with the schedule they've played, a lot of folks still have doubts about them. personally, I think they're a legit contender, despite the schedule, they can play and I wouldn't be shocked to see them knock off anyone.. I'd probably go with PT as my sleeper, because they don't have the greatest record and have struggled in a couple of games, but, in saying that, they're really playing well right now, have a solid offensive team, capable of putting up a lot of points and their D has really come on lately. I could see them knocking off ETown and even winning the next week and if so, they're a game away and anything from that point could happen.

I would consider Fairview my sleeper. Even though they're the lower seed this week, I really like their chances against Paris and then they'd get a rematch with Paintsville most likely, who'll likely be in a dog fight vs Raceland this week and they could be looking ahead to a Pikeville rematch and along comes "Not so fast, my friend" Fairview, with nothing to lose, everything to gain and a passing game capable of giving the Tigers fits..

  13. yeah it has taken some time but this is the year it has truly paid off because they are willing to commit to the play style no matter what. It seems to be the defense mechanism reaction from the offensive coordinator in big games to revert back to the 90's strategy of run and pound. I think it is different this year. more confidence in the new offense, more experience, and they have done it no matter what, even against cov cath or other big games, they stuck with the new offense. Beechwood may have finally dug their way out of the 90's playbook and entered the new world.

You may well be right, especially considering they've got a QB that's started for 3 years and played some as a freshman and the fact he's one of their better throwers they've had in some time.. But, that does make you wonder if it's evolved more because of the players he has to run it this year.. My guess is it's the players moreso than a system or philosophy overhaul..

  14. That is what will make the potential matchup so interesting, b/c its a completely evolved BW offense and Russelville is getting better and has made some changes as well. These are both different teams than when Mayfield played them in years past.

I've heard this same thing about Beechwood's evolved offense for the last 3+ years only to actually see the same ground and pound style with an occassional pass thrown in and it being a screen type pass that good teams will keep you from breaking.

  15. Butler Co is the type team that scares me.. They have a top notch QB and a couple of other nice looking skill players.. They can put up some points.. You get them in a game where no one's giving them a shot and they have nothing to lose and everything to gain and no pressure, it could be dangerous.. They certainly aren't a team you want to give up a couple of quick scores and allow them to stick around for 3 quarters with a shot to win in the 4th.. I think Mayfields D will be challenged here, but, I think they'll rise to the occassion more times than not.. Not sure how good Butler's D is, but, my guess is, not very, in looking at scores against the better teams on their schedule.. So, I think Mayfield's O will hit on several big plays and they'll grind out a couple of other scores where they impose their will and while I do think Butler will make a couple of big plays and score a couple of times, in the end, too much Mayfield.. 16. I will agree that Pikeville will win the east. I will disagree vehemently that the one dimensional offense that Russelville runs out there can beat BW. That's what always killed them against Mayfield, and thats what will beat them against BW. Unless there is another big physical team in the west out there like CCH I don't see anything in there way to BG. Cov Cath is a really good team, and have gotten better as the season has gone on. That early schedule would have resulted in a ton of 0-4 teams

Pot meet kettle.. Do you not realize that one of the primary reasons Mayfield beat Beechwood all those years is because the Tigers were way too one dimentional and the halftime adjustments were rather simple.

I will also say this, Mayfield was very fortunate to beat Russellville a couple of times. That so-called one-dimentiaonal offense ran all over the Cardinals a couple of times. Fortunately, they made 1/2 time adjustments and the Panthers wore down late in the game because of depth issues, but, the Wing-T is hard to stop when ran right and they ran it very well a few years..Some years better than others..

  18. You must consider how difficult CCH's schedule was this year. record is not everything. and although russelville may be excited, they may also have a fear that Mayfield was the only thing standing in the way of beechwood dealing the same damage Mayfield did to them every year, just a week later in the playoffs.

What Mayfield did to Russellville the past few years isn't too different than what Mayfield did to Beechwood the week after, sometimes, the Beechwood games were not as close, so, to assume, now that Mayfield's no longer in the picture, that Beechwood is going to dominate the way Mayfield did is very premature, in my opinion. Out of the years Mayfield played Beechwood, I felt like Beechwood was better than anyone else they played in the playoffs, in 2 or 3 of those years, but, there were a couple of years that Russellville would have been right there with them and then some. Very similar to Williamsburg last year and Hazard in 2011..
