Pikeville owned the 1st quarter.. Beechwood tightened up in the 2nd qtr and started getting some stops and eventually got a late score to cut the lead in 1/2, but, it was a pretty even quarter.. The Tigers got the better of the Panthers in the 3rd qtr and if not for the late tying Pikeville score, would have been a Tiger dominated qtr. The 4th qtr, the Panthers made the plays they needed to retake control of the game. You could give the Tigers the 2nd and 3rd qtrs. and give the Panthers the 1st and 4th qtrs.. Overall, the more physical team got the win and while Beechwood was known for it's balance, Pikeville held it's own thru the air while dominating in the running game.. A really good HS football game to watch..

I wanted to put Jonathan Jackson on there but, imo, there were others that were better RBs.. Now, LBs is a different story..He's definitely one of the best there..
-
I'd probably go with these as my Top 5, but, in no particular order: Will have to think about that for a bit..
Marcus Moss
Danny Fisher
Mikey Bright
William Murrell
Danny Kirby

Would like to hear who you think are the best running backs that's ever played at Mayfield, maybe rank them 1 to 5.. I know they've had a lot of great ones over the years.. Just to name a few, but, certainly, I know I'm leaving some out, here's some choices to choose from:
1970's
1) Robert Mayfield
2) Danny Fisher
3) David Fisher
4) Leslie Dismukes
5) Greg Hawkins
6) Van Pittman
1980's
1) Marcus Moss
2) Jerome Owens
3) John Redd
4) Charles Parrott
5) David Hobbs
6) Steve Carman(Lovelace)
1990's
1) Gerald Lunsford
2) Mikey Bright
3) Terrel Starks
4) William Murrell
5) Danny Kirby
2000's to present
1) Derrick Parrott
2) Blake Rust
3) Tyrese Murrell
4) Jonathan Jackson
5) Trajon Bright

The consistency is truly amazing. My Jr. year we traveled from Lawrence Co all the way to Mayfield for the final 4. Longest playoff drive ever! They beat us 21-18. I remember reading at some point around there that they had been to 24 of the last 26 Final 4's or something close to that! That was all the way back in 1991! They haven't degressed since then! It's amazing!
I think they have to have a pretty special youth/MS feeder program! They had William Murral (fastest kid in the state) and Barnes then. Both went to Eastern.
Murrell and Barnes were 2 of the best that ever played at Mayfield, but, don't seem to get the same pub as a lot of other kids who've been thru the program.. Marcus Moss, Danny Fisher, Danny Kirby, Michael Bright, John Redd, Gerome Owens, Derrick Parrott, Terrell Starks, to name a few that seem to get talked about more, but, imo, no better than Barnes and Murrell were..

A Pikeville win wouldn't be that big an upset . I think the 1a, 3a and 5a games shape up to be the best 3 and most competitive games and 4a could be a dandy, as well.

To be fair though how many teams that Mayfield competes against have D1 players? Doesn't seem a requirement for success at the lower levels. In fact I'm not sure it's really necessary until you get to the 5A and 6A levels.
D1 level players aren't even that prevelant at the 5a and 6a levels, with exception to maybe a Male or Trinity or Lafayette(this year).. There's been years when Trinity has been loaded with 7-8 D1 players, then others when they may only have 1 or 2.. Either way, they still dominate most other 6a teams in the state.. When Johnathan Jackson played at Mayfield, he could have played at any level in Ky, 1a to 6a and been the best player on the field 9 out of 10 times.. He was a stud, but, D1 teams shyed away because he was 5'11 and not 6'1, so, he ended up at Murray St and last I heard, leading the OVP in tackles or right their amongst the top.. When a player of his calibre isn't good enough to play D1 football, it tells me it takes a tremendously talented kid with size, skill, speed, athleticism, etc to even be considered and there's not that many out there on Ky HS Fb teams...

I've seen years where NCC didn't exactly look the part of a state champion thru out the season only to see them look like juggernauts at state and dominate..
-
I think Beechwood handled NCC in a pretty convincing fashion, but, it seems NCC is always a tough team when it plays at state.. Not sure the Tigers would beat them that bad in a state title game.. For some reason, that game gets the juices flowing and teams often play on emotion and over their normal heads and NCC is one that seems to thrive in the spotlight..

I didn't notice the time WPSD reported, but, as far as I know, it's 1:00 sunday with the 3a game at 4:00 and 4a game at 7:00.. If weather is decent, I may stay for all 3, but, at the very least for the 2a and 3a games..

Here's the actual highlights of the game plus another post game interview with Coach Morris..
-
Listen to Coach Morris in the locker room and on the field.. That's a very confident coach and that confidence works it's way down to the assistants and players and they're never in fear of losing.. Just play the next play and when the day's done, if you've done what the coaches have asked out of you, you'll come out the victor..
-
Why wouldn't Beechwood feel good about the way they are playing? Their defense is playing its best ball of the year. They won clear victories over their last two playoff opponents on the road. Heck yes they feel good about the way they are playing. They are in the championship game!
Thanks, VOR.. Glad to hear the D has stepped up.. Good luck this weekend..

Thefauxtiger, if you don't have an answer to a legit question, then you should just ignore and move on.. How you feel about me doesn't bother me in the least.. You act as if Beechwood dominated the Panthers last week, which is far from the truth. Coulda, shoulda, woulda scored 50 isn't what happened now is it.. I'm sure Russellville coulda and shoulda done a few things it didn't do either.. Now, back to the question, does Beechwood feel good about the way they're playing and feel confident going into the Pikeville game or are they somewhat concerned with the way they've played the past couple of weeks. Thefauxtiger, this ? isn't for you,it's already pretty obvious the only thing you're capable of answering is a babbling spew that brings nothing to the conversation..
-
If I'm a Tiger, I'm a little concerned after the last couple of weeks.. LHC is an average 1a team, at best, and was in the game with the Tigers.. Russellville was a better team, but, as most of the Tiger fans pointed out before that game occurred, the only 2 decent teams that Russellville played, Murray and FSimpson, they were blown out, but, this same team played tough against the Tigers. Does that say more for Murray and FS or is Beechwood a little over hyped.. When I look at Pikeville, you see a team that would most likely have taken care of Beechwoods last 2 opponents much easier than they did. This Panther team is a much more complete team than either and can match up on the speed side.. Should the Beechies be concerned or do they feel they're the better team and should take care of business if they play a better than average game and don't turn it over..

One thing to remember with NCC is that they use the rest of the season to prepare for the playoffs. That means playing guys only one way or sparingly playing them both ways in non district games against schools much larger. Then they tighten that up in District games and then tighten it even further as they go deeper in the playoffs.
That strategy has worked to perfection once again this year.. Seems like they're always peaking during the playoff run and getting better by the week as the playoffs progress.. Maybe they're fortunate to not have to get thru the west side of 2a, which is very difficult, but, the team that does have to run that gauntlet can easily wear down by the time the championship rolls around.. I know OB Cath and Desales were both very hard hitting and physical teams and that can take it's toll..
-
Where did you hear that? DeSales is an all-boys school but they only have 315 students. They are at the highest male enrollment in 2A but still fit within the bounds of the class.
http://khsaa.org/football/realignment/20152018/FourYearEnrollmentsbyDraftClass.pdf
It isn't.
How can a school only have 300 boys and 100 of them play football? That's an unheard of number.. Even the most tradition rich programs aren't close to that %.. Trinity has 1300 boys and 200 play football, Highlands has 400 boys and 80 play football, Mayfield has 200 boys and 50 play.. Male has 100 but they also have 700 boys.. Just curious, is there a clause in your qualifications that state you must be a great athlete or play football to attend..
-
2 of the better passing teams in 1a and both have solid running games. Pikeville may be a little more explosive offensively and more physical defensively.. Beechwood will hold the advantage in depth on both sides and special teams play. I see the coaching being pretty even.. I expect this to be a high scoring game.. I think Pikeville will prevail in a shootout .. Pikeville 42 Beechwood 34

Mayfield is a young team this year and return a good nucleus next year, so, they should have a great chance to be back again next year.. Arnett-QB, Bright-RB, a couple of OL and WRs and then a couple of LBs and DBs and a DL,,
-
This Desales team had great talent and depth at every position.. I really believe when they got up early and was having success moving the ball, they thought it was over. I don't think they ever thought for a minute, they could lose the game.. Once Mayfield got their footing back in the 2nd quarter and started getting stops and then moving the ball offensively, the Cards never waivered or doubted themselves. That long 2nd quarter drive and score gave them the push and confidence they needed. Once the 2nd half started, Mayfield took possession of the ball and didn't give Desales a lot of time to do anything. By the time the Colts got the ball and put together a decent drive, they had already given up 17 2nd half points and were fighting the clock moreso than the opposition. I still think the whole time they were getting further and further down, they still thought it was just a matter of time before they imposed their will and took control of the game. To the Cardinals credit, they weren't going to allow that, not on this night.. By the time the 4th qtr got going, the Cards were the ones with extra kick in their step and weren't just holding on, but, rather imposing their will and making a statement for the rest of 2a to hear loud and clear. We're back and we're not going to take a back seat to anyone.
-
Typically, when someone is video recording a game, they do so either above the press box or in the upper level around midfield, not way over in the scoreboard end zone section.. That's the 1st time I've ever seen one from that angle.. Just curious why you didn't try and get more toward the middle of the field..
-
Mayfield showed a lot of heart and no quit tonight, getting down 13-0 in the 1st quarter and just being mentally tough and staying focused and playing the next play. Could have turned ugly, but, the Cards absolutely dominated the 2nd half, just like last week, controlling field position and forcing the Colts to have to score on a long field nearly every 2nd half possession.. Bright came up with some great runs in crunch time. Arnett hit on some big passes under duress, even after throwing 3 picks, gotta love the confidence in himself and teammates. The D tightened up and started stopping the running game that worked so well early for the Colts.. Great win for the Cards..

18 points!!! :-) 2 TDs (one 2-pt conversion) and a 43-yard FG. The second TD came in garbage time but it was against our first team defense. Most points scored against us in two years. CAL's offense is for real - ask Simon Kenton.
Well, considering Simon Kenton had about 60 on the board against the 2nd best D in 2a, I'd imagine some of those points came against the JV, although, I do believe CAL scored quite a few early and on the starters..
-
Our little 3 man front on D at 195, 235 and 240 is probably going to get pushed all over the place.. 2 of our OL are under 200 LBs.. I sure hope our boys don't get hurt against those brutes..

Considering the 2 teams distance to BGreen, playing it on a thursday night and no 2nd game to watch that generally brings a lot of those fans early, I think the 5700 was a really strong turnout.. Had this game on friday at 11:00 as it usually is, you could probably add an easy 1000 to that number..
