  1. This is only my opinion and I have to defend the officials on this one. There is so much bashing of officials on BGP from cowards that hide behind fake names and blast officials. These officials work very hard to put the best product on the field. In general, we have a very good group in Northern Kentucky. We should count our blessings.

I think that some of ya'll have to think about the officials in situations like this. I would think that it wouldn't be much fun to be watching the action on the field, while side stepping down the sidelines and get blind-sided by a coach, or even worse, a camera lens.

Everyone has a digital camera these days and most of these schools allow anyone with a camera on the sidelines. It is out of control. There are way too many amateur and professional photographers on the sidelines. Sometimes, it's a circus on the field. I think that each school has to take responsibility and have their game administrator control who has a sideline pass. It is a privilege to be on the sidelines, not a right. In no way is it the officials fault for calling a penalty. No one takes responsibility for their actions anymore, it's always someone else's fault. I’ll get off my soap box now.

  2. It was a very exciting game. Officiating was mediocre. CCH TD called back for holding which came flying out of the refs pocket when the CCH receiver crossed the goal line after a 45 yd reception and run. It was like dejavue to the CCH sophomores who experienced a late flag throw by the ref when CCH was going for the lead in last years freshman matchup. Even more ironic was that it was thrown at the same end of the field where the spectators don't have a view. Just an observation. I also want to add that this was the first game for the CCH JV in over a month. The future is looking good fore the Colnels.

Let me see...the refs cheated Cov. Cath on Saturday when ya lost and ya got cheated again in the JV game. I think I see a pattern developing here......

  3. The difference is this game for Newport was horrific officiating, on the blok punt it was clear the ball went into the end zone, they gave it to NewCath on the one. The on side kick the side judge said Newport ball and the white hat came from the other side of the field to change the call, come on now either newport had the ball or they didn't how hard is that to call. Newport's QB ran with the ball on 4th down and was took out of bounds right at the first down marker and they did not even call for a measurement. Newport could not get a call in this game. NewCath coach I think felt the same way as they was on the afficiating crew all night. Newport has no luck when they need a play they could not make one. I could go on and on but if the ball would have bounced the other way this could have been a different game. Both teams played some hit ball and 33 for NewCath can tell you about that. Good luck to both teams the rest of the year!

It's always the officials fault when ya lose!

  4. Bob Schneider Newport Central Catholic

    Noel Rash Beechwood

I almost choked on this one. I checked the KHSAA here are some stats:

    Schneider 517 games, 338 wins 65%

    Hilton 418 games, 320 wins 76%

    Haywood 429 games, 319 wins 74%

    Redman 429 games, 307 wins 71%

    Glaser 360 games, 296 wins 82%

    Harp 381 games, 294 wins 77%

Just because you have the most wins does not mean you are a good coach. He has been coaching since the days of leather helmets. jmo

  5. Beechwood was just named the #1 high school in the state based on this year's ACT scores. There is ZERO reason for a student to choose another high school over Beechwood for academic reasons. As to the other opportunities you mention for boys soccer, track, etc., that is a valid point and I would not fault a Ft. Mitchell kid for going to Highlands for those reasons. Beechwood lost a very good freshman athlete this year that is going to Moeller because of wrestling and we wish him great success in that. Highlands is also one of the top 5 high schools in the state academically and is right there with Beechwood academically, but I would argue they are not better than Beechwood academically.

Beechwood's special education program is the worst in the WORLD! There is one reason to choose another school.

  6. Actually, the JV played their first game last night against Dixie and lost on a last second TD pass by Zeke Pike 35-32. Pike made 3 very nice crucial plays that led to scores and was definitely the difference in the game for Dixie. It was a great game. It started ugly and was looking like the varsity game all over with Dixie getting ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. But the Beechwood coaches made some adjustments, the Tigers got their game feet under them and did a nice job the rest of the way. I think the Beechwood JV will be competitive even without those key sophomores who are playing varsity. I am sure they are looking forward to their rematch games with Dixie (Dixie and Beechwood have 3 JV games scheduled against each other). The only 1A school on Beechwood's JV schedule is Walton. Beechwood's JV game with Highlands could be a good one (1st of two JV games scheduled against Highlands).

Interesting side note, Spritzky was on the sideline with the team and it looked to me like he coached the game for Dixie. That seemed a little unusual.

Coach Rash was coaching on Beechwood sidelines too.

  7. Sophomores getting varsity playing time against Dixie were Joe Staten starting at LB, Dane Everett starting at DE, Cameron Vocke playing about 50% of the snaps on offense in the slot and Corey Cruse seeing some action at both DE and TE. Some others got in for a play or two spelling people and as the Beechwood coaches started trying to find someone who could make plays.

There was at least one other that got significant playing time along with Staten, Evertt, Vocke, and Cruse. At times there were 5 or 6 sophomores on the defense.

  8. Thunderbirds WOW! You might want to go down with the ship. We have no cannon in the bird nest, but we sure will print this for the 9/3 Thursday match-up. You seem to forget these boys work very hard as I am sure as mentioned in this thread that BW does as well. Our boys are taught win you win say little and when you lose say less. You have built a winning tradition but don't give Coach M a reason to fire up the birds during summer two a days. We welcome the challenge in 3 years. For now you might want to look to play a matchup or two on the otherside of the river. We would never duck BW.

You silly bird fans are using the terms 'duck' and 'run'. Not I!

And I am not talking about Thursday night this year. I'm sure that Highlands will win and run up the score as they like to do.

  9. Got to see that 1st hand and it was sure special. I'm hoping Highlands/Beechwood play more than a 1 Two year series this time around. Curious to see if Vocke goes off on Highlands when he is a senior. Not many players do.

From what I understand, it is only a 2 years series this time too. When last years freshman are seniors (in 3 years, a year after the series is over) Highlands will not want any part of them!

  10. This will definately be an interesting year. The upcoming senior class has never been a "football class" for a variety of reasons. However, I am not very worried.

As small as we are, Beechwood always has kids ready and willing to stand up and step up. Last year's freshmen team was the best in many years and they are very ready and very hungry. They might be young, but they are awesome. If they win state next year, there will be no stopping them for the next 3 years.

The Tigers are number one till someone else proves otherwise.

    Can't wait!

Normally, there are not many sophmores that get playing time for Beechwood. Do you REALLY think there are some current freshman that are ready? I'm not so sure....maybe one or two....

  11. Does anyone have their schedule this year?

    8-14 Conner Scrimmage

    8-21 Boone Co. Scrimmage

    8-28 at Dixie 7:00

9-3 Highlands (Thurs. night Fox Sports Regional Game) 7:00

    9-11 Holy Cross 7:30

9-19 at Cov. Cath 1:00 (sat)

    9-25 Dayton7:30 (district game)

10-3 at Walton 1:00 (district game)

    10-9 Ludlow 7:30 (district game)

10-16 at Bishop Brossart 7:00 (district game played at Newport)

    10-23 at Bellevue7:00 (district game)

    10-30 Newport Catholic

  12. My understanding is the class is for Juniors only. Do you really think one class period is enough time? Taking away the time to get into your work out cloths how munch time is really left in a class period? Maybe 30 minutes? Then given the fact there is about 20 Jr. (football season Sr.), and the fact they are lifting in a small room, how much work out time per kid is really there? I'm not knocking the kids or coaches this is about a need for a better work out facility. I would like to see some past players step up and raise the funds to build a real weight room so these kids and coaches can take the program to the next level. If there is anyone interested I would be willing to volunteer my time as well. Send me a PM and we will get to work.

Why would past players be interested in raising money? That could be a hard sell. Wouldn't it be easier to start with the current players and current players familes? Is there still a Bellevue Boosters? I know when I played, they helped us tons!

  13. It is true that Belleve has a weight lifting class, were they lift, run, etc. From what I have heard and seen the class is definitely paying off. The several kids I saw when I was in town last week, have gotten much bigger. Also, from what I have heard, the underclassmen lift three days a week.

The good news is that they are doing something to keep up with the other teams in Northern Kentucky. I know that some of the other teams are working very hard.

  14. They need to get a better off season work out program. They have some good players and coaches but lack the off season work out program that it takes to be competitive with the good teams.

What do they or don't they do? Are they working out now (May 2009)?

  15. The fact of the matter is that school baseball doesn't have near the impact on college scholarship potential as does summer baseball and various baseball camps. It is not accurate to say "if you're good, you will get noticed." College coaches are very busy with their own teams during the Spring and do most of their scouting and recruiting in the summer. What IS important, however, is the quality of competition that small schools play compared vis-a-vis with larger schools to get them ready for summer baseball. Sorry, but it is a vastly different animal playing against the Villas, Daytons, Newports, Silver Groves, Ludlows, etc... of the world than it is playing CCH, Boone, Ryle, Beechwood, and the stronger schools in Lexington and Lousville. That level of competition gets you better prepared to face serious travel tournament competition in the summer, where you stand a much better chance of being noticed.

I agree. Rob Smith, former Highlands lineman recieved a scholarship to Tennessee. Rob grew up in Bellevue and Dayton. When it came time for high school, his dad moved to Ft. Thomas so that he could play for Highlands. I do not think that Rob would have gone to Tenn. coming out of Bellevue. Nothing against Bellevue. I do think he would have gotten a full ride somewhere, but that place would have been Eastern or Western or maybe even Kentucky. But not Tennessee and on to the NFL. This is just my opinion, but I do think it does matter. Maybe more so in some sports than others....but for sure in football.
