  1. Another very nice NKCA awards ceremony at Triple Crown Country Club this afternoon. Coach Donna Murphy was the guest speaker and she was outstanding. Everybody in attendance benefitted from the wisdom she shared as only Coach Murphy can. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches recognized.

  2. Very enjoyable event this afternoon at Warren Central HS. The West all stars were made up of players from Regions 1-8 and the East all stars were made up of players from Regions 9-16. Teams consisted of the players of the year for each region and the runner up. The East All Stars won the game 87 to 57. Kristen Stainbeck was player of the game for the east and Rachel Hodge for the west. The players of the year were recognized at halftime of game one on Friday. Congratulations to all.

  3. The boy's basketball team at Dixie has a date with history on Friday. Members of the 1947 and 1957 regional championship teams from Dixie have been invited to enjoy lunch at school with the 2011 championship team. A very cool way to kickoff the state tournament festivities the school has planned and bring all these champions together.

  4. The 9th Region tournament should be held in a High School Gym, period. I'll take the trade off of a comfortable front row seat for "bleacher-butt" smack in the middle of a bunch of sceaming students any day of the week. I know it probably never will go back to that because it's more about making money than it is about the experience.

I am old school as well, but there something to be said for not having to clear the gym between games on the semi final nights and it was very nice not having to worry about being turned away at the door or having to get in line an hour ahead of time to make sure you get in for the game. The atmosphere today at the boys' final was unbelievable. I know that is not the case at all the games at BOK. I also think there is an advantage for the teams advancing having played in the arena atmosphere when it comes to playing at Rupp or Diddle.

  5. Boone certainly didn't look "inspired" in all areas today. A bit surprising.

The girl for NCC that seems to make them go is Bartels(sp?) #11. Not many girls in NKY can make the pull up J like she can.

I agree that Boone did not play very inspired today. Moss seemed frustrated as well and just could not take over the game like she has so many other times and no one else from Boone stepped up down the stretch. Congratulations to NCC on a fantastic effort. They played their game and never panicked and hit big shots down the stretch. Good luck at state.

  6. Congrats to the Indians. 4th time was a charm.

End of 3rd was MC 40 GRC 39. GRC didn't hit their free throws down the stretch. Precia Rogers fouls out and that really hurt the Cards.

Best of luck to the Indians in Bowling Green.

GRC was up 23-17 about halfway through 2nd quarter and MC finished the half on an 8-0 run to take a 25-23 halftime lead. They continued the run early in the third to take control of the game. GRC made runs but could never get over the hump. They missed key shots down the stretch. Rogers fouling out with 2+ minutes left really hurt. A very young MC team hung on and deserved the win. Good luck.

  7. I was at the same game and did not see any more hand checking or pushing from Brossart than I did from Scott. Both teams played a little sloppy. Scotts ball handling was not very good and they really struggled to get Lauren the ball in the post. She played a ton of high post in the first half and we were all scratching our heads in the stands. If you are fortunate enough to have a great 6' 4" player, put her on the low block and get her the ball. There was about a 10 minute stretch in the first half where lauren did not even touch the ball. I was surprised but relieved. Once she gets it near the basket she is almost unstoppable. I would have made sure she touched the ball on every trip.

She has 6" on Ridder, why not throw from the wing a high lob?

I have scratched my head over the same thing. When the double and triple teams go with you, I know it is challenging, but know there are some more creative things that could have been done to move her more and get her the ball. Running a simple two man game on the wing where it is a pick and roll. Lauren could run either spot to change it up. All of the turnovers cause too many lost possessions and there were long runs in many games where she never touched the ball.

  8. There were times when Moss defended Tibbs and vice versa. Moss can shoot threes well, play point when needed, and dribble well, and she has a ton of assists, so I think her transition would be easy. Boone probably would only be about 500 without Moss. She has also been double and triple teamed a lot this year.

I agree that Syd has faced some double and triple teams, but Boone has the other players that force teams to play them more honest which frees Syd up more in one on one match ups. Scott does not have that and teams are able to commit to a five person in the lane zone or double and triple teams throughout the game. The transition to D1 basketball is going to be a challenge for both. Lauren adjusting to the physical play and speed and Syd playing more at the 3, facing the basket. College coaches would not spend all the time and money they do in recruiting unless they are convinced the players can make that transition. They are both going to have great college careers.

  9. Did Ryle employ the same D on Shrout as they did the last time?

92 points ? In one game?

They started in it the first couple times down the floor, but Boone got off to such a fast start and were hitting shots that Ryle had to get out it quickly and go straight man. They had a horrible time matching up. The other key in the first half was the sagging man to man defense that Boone employed that totally shut down Ryle's dribble drive offense. They could not get any meaningful penetration. At the other end, Boone did not miss. They scored inside and outside.

  10. Yes, Moss played better in that game. However, Tibbs got very little help (except for Taylor Stinson, who instead of playing the post was handling the ball at the end of the year and playing out of position) all year. She was regularly tripled teamed and was still the top scorer in NKY, with no true point guard to get her the ball. And Scott probably averaged over 20 turnovers a game, which cost Tibbs probably another hundred or so points. Moss had much more help and if you turned all your attention to her, the other girls could kill you. Without Tibbs, Scott probably only wins two games all year. Boone would still be good without Moss.

I acknowledge I have a bias where this is concerned, but i will be the first to say that Sydney Moss is a phenomenal talent and is deserving of POY. I will be the first to say congratulations if she wins it this year, but please do not sell Lauren Tibbs short because of the team she played on or that she is different kind of player with a different skill set. She was POY last year in N. KY as a junior. She scored 31 last year vs Boone and over all outplayed Moss in that game. Numerous coaches from the SEC, Big East and other major conferences think that Lauren has what it takes. She has done it every year facing double and triple teaming and playing the top teams in the ninth and tenth regions. I am not suggesting that Scott's schedule totally matches Boone's each year, but they have always played the top teams in the area and certainly has not loaded up their schedule with cupcakes. Lauren has led N. KY in scoring the last two years and could very well do it again this year. Numerous coaches have commented that if Scott had consistent guard play at the point and the two spot, there is no telling what kind of numbers Lauren would have put up. I am not suggesting that Lauren "deserves" it more than Syd, only that she has had a great career and is very deserving of strong consideration and the respect of N. KY basketball coaches and fans. Good luck to both girls.

  11. It will be interesting how Ryle approaches this game defensively. The box and one they deployed in game one was very effective especially in the first half. I am sure that Boone has a plan to attack that defense if used again. There is certainly more at stake with this game since you do not want to go into the regional tournament as a loser and draw NCC or Notre Dame. I still think that Ryle wins a close one in the end.

  12. "Inexperience...she's a freshman...not sure what she was thinking, maybe didn't know the score. She was right next to the Scott Bench...somebody should have been yelling to her to hold the ball or even a time out could have been called. Still,it should have never come down to that shot."

Agree 100 percent, she is a freshman, and who knows what she was thinking. Lauren has done so much for the Scott Lady Eagles this year, had it not been for her for the most part, they would not have won some of the games that they did win.

Congratulations to Brossart. They did what it took to win this game. Unfortunately the Lady Eagles had every chance to win it, but could not get it done. Lauren Tibbs did not have a "Lauren Tibbs" night. Certainly not the way she wanted to go out, but she has had a fabulous career. She has done it the right way with class, hard work and a positive attitude through some very challenging seasons at Scott. All time leader in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots in Scott HS history. Led the state in field goal percentage and top five in the state in scoring for 2010-2011. Led N. KY. In scoring the last two years and leading again this year down the stretch. Good luck at Marquette. Hopefully there will be a Kentucky All Star spot in your future as well.

  13. This is the vote that is recognized at the banquet. We vote twice in the 10th region -- once is for everyone who is a KABC member and in that vote Coach Cravens and Coach True tied and they are co-coaches of the year. Both will be recongized at the State Tournament.

Does anyone know when the coaches and players are recognized at the state tournament? (W, Th, F or Sat) Pre-game? Between games?

  14. Also, I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned before the game, but 3 of the top scorers in KY basketball history were participating in the game....Jamie Walz (Highland Coach), Rhonda Klette (Scott Coach) and Lauren Tibbs. Over 10,000 pts between those 3!!!

Great stat. Did not think about that. Tibbs went over 2700 in the game tonight. A whole lot of scoring between the three of them.

  15. The Lady Eagles really battled hard throughout this game and gave Highlands everything they wanted. It was a three point game under two minutes to go. Scott just could not get over the hump. Tibbs led the way with 30 points for Scott. Highlands was balanced. Connor had some big baskets and free throws for them.
