  1. Agreed on Voskuhl.....Great player. I'm just happy that the Officials didn't pamper her play like they have in the past with players like Moss. She was a beast outside the 3 line tonight. If she rolls Notre Dame will be a tough out. She will not be able to get into Foul trouble though.

Agree...she means a whole lot to Notre Dame success. Cant beat good teams without her.

  2. Very solid win and a nice basketball team. Congrats to the Pandas and good luck down state.

Olivia Voskhul..not sure of the spelling but she put on a shooting clinic tonight! She is a heck of a player. One of the better performances I have seen in a long time. Congrats to ND and also to Highlands. Voskhul was just to much for Highlands tonight. Everytime Highlands would get close she would just break it back open.

  3. I have no problem with your argument. But I am a firm believer in classifying all sports. At least I am consistent and do not pick and choose what sports I want to classify and which ones I do not.

I am not pick and choosing. I could care less whether they go to classes or not but when the rest of your region is seeding and your not it just doesnt make sense thats all. It could result in a team.. depending on the draw.. walk to the finals of the regional tournament when you dont send the two best teams thats all. I dont blame Newport, Dayton, and Bellevue for voting not to seed hell i would to.

  4. REALLY?????? How about the state should do away with football classes too..........Then you would not be able to hang your hat on your 6 classes and water downed state championships. Same arguement you use for basketball should be good for football right????????

They have the all A...that is for the small schools. You need to send the best teams to the region so you can send the best teams down state. Now Highlands has water downed state championships in football because they have classes they arent water downed only one team in the state better than Highlands the last 3yrs and thats Trinity...Highlands was the best team in the state 07-09 so not sure about your argument there. I went to a small school and never had a chance to play in the region and i dont have a problem with it. I sure didnt want to back into the region. Sorry useless but you are dead wrong on this one!

  5. I do not think you can call Highlands under dog in this one. They can't be favored by much but I do think they are a slight favor. I was surprised when I read that Highlands has not won district championship since 2001. They are due but will they choke Tuesday, will NCC show their best and prove they still own the district? This should be a good one. Too bad they have a stupid blind draw and one of these teams will be going home.

Highlands won the district in 07 and 08. It is a shame one of these teams are not going to the regional tournament.

  6. So he's going to leave Cov Cath because Highlands is too good?

Also let me say that I think Dave has done a great job at CCH...they were the second best team in the state in 4a last year easy and that is not a dig at them. If it werent for HHS he may have 2 state titles. I just dont see why he would leave unless it was money thats all.

  7. I can see where they have trouble scheduling based on the "gap" so to speak................But you figure while they will still be one of the top three teams in the whole state, they may not be the dominating force as in the past several years....................

I agree they will still be top 3 in the state but i think they may lose a few out side of the state next year.

  8. Trust me when I tell you, I do know what it takes lol. I'm not trying to single him out, he was just an example. Why close the door on any opportunity? Lets be honest, kids have no idea at the age of 15-22 what they want or whats best for them. We all have friends that say, "I shoulda played this, I shoulda done that", "I wish someone would have told me". Well, I'm sure someone did, you just didn't listen.

I agree with a lot of what your are saying. I have always thought he should have tried football. If you do know what it takes to play pro sports then good for you. You are a very small percentage. I agree that on the outside its easy for us to see what kids may or may not be reallly good at but at the end of the day its what they choose...right or wrong.

  9. Demands and expectations of AAU programs? Varsity coaches expecting commitment to one sport? 12 month a year conditioning and participation expectations? Parents who have unrealistic assessment of their child's skill level?

Disclaimer: I have no connection to NCC and am just throwing these out.

That is why they are what they are in basketball...very good. Other than Mcdonald...not sure the others have football bodies. He is a great golfer...thats what i would focus on. At the end of the day its what the kids want to do. You cant make them love something they dont love.

  10. I'm in no way saying it was a lock, c'mon. You have no idea what could or could not have done. My point is, he had as good a chance as you could ask for. Zero chance to make it to the nba.

It was Jakes decision to play basketball thats is what he liked. I am not sure you understand how good you have to be to play pro sports.....your right he had no chance in the NBA and 0.01 chance to play in the NFL...so why not play what you love.

  11. I saw a post in another thread about high school athletes that don't have a real chance to play college basketball, should play other sports. I thought it was an excellent comment. It seems NCC has this problem and has been a problem over the last few years. I've watched the NCC varsity basketball team play a few times. They have some kids that could be serious studs in football and possibly play on the next level, but really have no chance at playing college basketball. IMO, their is only one basketball prospect on that team, jake Shultz or something like that, not sure on the last name. They had a kid a few years ago, jake geisler, he could have played on Sundays......now I hear he is trying to walk on at NKU.

Where are these kids getting their advice from, guess that's my question. They need to realize, NKU isn't taking 5'9" players anymore. You better be better or as good as the sophomore from Holmes.

I agree that Jake should have gone the football route to have more success in his career as an athlete but playing on Sundays....thats a little much.

  12. I saw something last night that I have seen for years that I think is just wrong but it goes on all the time. In the freshman tournament 4 girls that did not play during the season 2 weeks ago on the freshman team show up to the tournament and play most of the game. We beat them 2 weeks ago without these player but got beat last night with the JV players on the floor. They also had 4 girls that never saw the floor and 3 girls that played most of the 1st game played very little. If I were a parent and a coach put my daughter on the bench so a JV player could play so we could win and she never saw the floor I would be highly upset. We have 5 very good freshman that could have done this very thing and the game would not have even been close but they have played JV/Varsity all year so they were not brought down. If that would have happened my daughter would have played very little but since our staff chooses not to she played about half the game in the lose. I have seen it in other sports as well. I know at some schools the numbers make this necessary but this was not the case.

What do others think of this practice and have others seen this as well????????

I have to disagree 100%.....I coach 8th grade girls and I have 3 girls that start freshman and have not played for me all year. We just won the district and are in the regional tournament. It would be a slap in the face to have some of the girls who have worked there butts off sit and an watch the girls who have played ahead of them. I dont see the point unless you want to win the tournament and really what does that mean...so you can say we won the freshman tournament..how about the girls that have worked hard all year without them. Every team in the region could shuffle some players around to win games if they wanted to. The girls have earned that playing time so give it to them!

  13. This is very tough and I'm not trying to hurt feelings, but this is probably the way I see it and I'll try to give a one-liner for my reason. And remember, some of this is really splitting hairs because I think each player plays different roles for thier team.

    1) Voskuhl - Slight edge here for me. She does a lot for her team, scoring, defense, rebounding and ball handling. I know that several others do too, but she has done it against a tougher schedule (so far) than some of the others you can say the same things about--IMO.

    2) J. Scott. - This is the tough one for me. She does the same thing for her team...everything! Great player! Again, splitting hairs and only saw her for one game and it was against a 6'1" defender for HHS. I thought HHS held her down a little and it appeared she had a few more turnovers than I thought she would have. Now in all fairness, she was harrassed by HHS all night and played that game without Gambrel, who definitely would have assisted with the pressure. Again, splitting hairs, but this is why I give Voskuhl the edge.

    3) Schaeffer - this next group is tough. I go with Leah here. Maybe it's just because I see her so much. But she would be close to here anyway. She is not a stat stuffer, but she is an everything players for her team. She requires so much attention when she's on the floor that it makes others better. She is a lock down defender and can rebound well. She gets blocks, but also alters a ton of shots. She forces to change offensive strategies, just depending on where she is playing or who she is guarding. Heck, she often gets moved to the point when they struggle with ball handling. She just does soo much that doesn't get recorded.

4)Kiernan - When you say "stud" she comes to mind. An absolute force that teams complete game plan is formed around how to you stop her! A great scorer who is not just an inside player. Can shoot well and plays good defense in the paint. Only give the edge to Leah here because I think she is a little more versatile on both ends and has the added ball handling skills. But If I was starting a team, you wouldn't go wrong with picking Nikki first!

5)Beal - I think she is the most under rated in NKY. She is very similar to Scott where she does so much for her team. She can get to the basket and finish with anyone. She is a floor leader and plays solid defense. HC has some other really nice players, but would be nowhere close to where they are without Beal. If there's one opportunity, in my opinion she could work on her outside shot. I think a quick adjustment to her shot would help her and if she was a lights out shooter like Scott, she would be almost unstoppable.

6)Turner - Now I put her here and it's going to bite me in the butt because we play Holmes Thursday!!! Great offensive player! In fact, in one post I said I felt Holmes was a sleeper team (mostly because of her). I know they took one on the chin against Boone, but Boone has seemed to find some magic lately! Deja can shoot, drive and finish. She is very crafty for her age. She has a lot of ways to score! I haven't seen her yet this year, so she may change my mind after Thursday.

The best of the rest. If you forced me to put them in order, this is the order I would put them. But everyone could make an argument that could sway me a bunch of differnt directions.

Jones - extremely athletic, good ball handler and a great defender. Probably needs to learn how to score outside of just layups. Seems to struggles against a zone or teams that rotate well in MTM.

Daley - Great scorer in the paint. She has CARRIED the birds on several occasions this year, especially when Leah was out. I haven't seen ANYONE with the inside footwork of this young lady! Definitely her strength. Her post defense is typically pretty good, but outside of the paint defense is definitley her weakness.

Ogle - Another girl that I think is under rated or just played a great game against us! She carried ND at times against us. She also does a lot of things that may not stuff the stat sheet, but just a great comlimentary player to Voskuhl. She was able to penentrate our defense and make things happen.

Johnson - This may just be from lack of exposure to her. She was out when we played her, but I also saw Ryle play Frankfort in Louisville when she was playing. She was definitely the leader on her team! Now Frankfort has some very fast/quick players, so this might have led to my next comment. I feel her ball handling is a little suspect. Frankfort kept playing her on the right side and forcing her to the left and she didn't look like she felt very comfortable. She is a strong physical player and is probably forced to handle the ball a little more than she should. I was very impressed with her last year when she didn't have to be one of the main ball handlers. She is very good, but I would put her down at the bottom of the top players.

Mayes - After Kiernan, this is the next person on the game plan when you play NCC. Some may say she is a benefactor of so much focus on Kiernan, but even if that is true, you still have to execute! I think NCC went from a one-headed monster to a two-headed monster because of her development. I think she is a real nice defensive player as well. She seems to really "dig in" on defense (at least she did against us). I'm a defensive guy, so that gets my attention real quick. She's gonna be a good one!

Meyers - Just really impressed with her hard work on the court. I said in a different post that with a little polish, she will be very good. Her "blue collar" work is what got my attention from her. She was everywhere...rebounding, defending, blocking shots and playing her role as a scorer down low. I came into that game expecting to see more of a role player and left thinking that kid is going to be good!

Oliverio - I know that she has had some good games and is definitely a leader on this year's Ryle team, but I'm just not sure what that means. Ryle is definitely having a down year and I'm not sure if arguably the second best player on Ryle would be in my top ten. I think she is a good shooter and leader, just feel she is a little suspect in other areas of her game to be considered top ten. She is a very good bball player, but we're talking the best in the ninth region. She's close, but just not there for me. Again, not trying to hurt feelings and it's just my opinion.

Haley Coffey - definitely the best of the best....Whoops! Maybe I'm a little biased on this pick!

    I will go with this..

    1. Kiernan

    2. Voskuhl

    3. Schaefer

    4. Scott

    5. Turner

    6. Beal

From what i have seen i like this....all are great players.
